News: Drew Estate Announces Small Ring Gauge Sizes for Liga No. 9 and T52 and New Papas Fritas Size

Here’s the daily news from Drew Estate, I’m still waiting to receive one we’ve all seen teased, maybe tomorrow…anyway, they soft-launched the Corona Viva size of the Ligas at CI’s Cigarfest earlier this year, but I didn’t see the other sizes coming. I guess there was a lot of smaller than normal leaves in the Connecticut Broadleaf harvest a few years ago. Anyway, I smoked a corona sizes No. 9 a few years ago that Saka had made up special, thanks to Coop, and it was pretty fantastic. You may fond this odd, but I’m not a huge fan of small cigars, but I’ll give these a try, and it stands to reason if they are making a bunch more first run cigars they will have picadura available to make the “Fritas”, be it Papas, or Nasty.

Drew Estate announces the Corona Viva, Short Panatela, and Petit Corona vitola extensions for Liga Privada No. 9 and T52, as well as the Unico Serie Nasty Fritas will be available for Drew Diplomat Retailers. Each of the DDRP releases will be displayed in Drew Estate’s Booth at the IPCPR Convention and Tradeshow held, July 14-17, 2018 in Las Vegas Nevada.

The No. 9 and T52 Corona Viva, Short Panatela, and Petit corona will now be core sizes of the No. 9 and T52 lines, featuring the Liga Connecticut River Valley Broadleaf and Stalk Cut Habano blends, over plantation grown Brazilian Mata Fina binders, and Nicaraguan and Honduran fillers.

The Nasty Fritas utilizes a Connecticut Broadleaf Oscuro wrapper and a plantation grown Brazilian Mata Fina binder over Nicaraguan and Honduran fillers. Like the Papas Fritas, the Nasty Fritas filler tobacco incorporates left over tobacco leaves that are short cut through the manufacture of Liga Privada No. 9 and Liga Privada T52 cigars.

When the Diplomat App came out, the Papas Fritas quickly became a fan favorite with “Papas Fritas Tuesdays” and the Lit Mafia. The group was like that’s the Esteliano version of getting nasty on some French fries. We’ve been enjoying it mostly at Cigar Safari in Nicaragua, but its time to get mega nasty with our homies.”

News: 5 Pigs Fly for Father’s Day at Drew Diplomat Retailers

Here’s some news from my friends at Drew Estate. Last week we went out for an early dinner at a local bar called the Flying Pig Saloon, which has great sandwiches, along with an extensive beer menu. They have flying pigs all over the place! Check it out if you’re ever in Malvern, PA!

Drew Estate announces today the Holiday release of Liga Privada & Undercrown Flying Pigs to Drew Diplomat retailers in the United States for Father’s Day.

The Flying Pig is one of the most sought-after sizes in the company’s portfolio, presented in a 100mm x 60 ring gauge parejo vitola and is a favorite amongst cigar enthusiasts. The shape is based off a photograph of an 1895 cigar salesman’s size selection case. It is one of the most complicated vitolas to manufacture due to the unique size and signature pig-tail, which requires specialized training of the buncheros and rolleras at the factory.The Liga Privada No. 9 Flying pig and Liga Privada T52 Flying Pig is manufactured at La Gran Fabrica Drew Estate in Esteli, Nicaragua. The No. 9 features a Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper, Plantation Grown Brazilian Mata Fina Binder and filler leaves from Nicaragua and Honduras. The Liga Privada T52 features a Connecticut River Valley Stalk Cut and Sun Cured Habano Wrapper, Plantation Grown Brazilian Mata Fina Binder and filler leaves from Nicaragua and Honduras. Both are packaged in 12 count boxes with an MSRP of $181.20 and a 2018 total annual production of 2500 boxes.

The Undercrown Maduro, Undercrown Shade, and Undercrown Sun Grown Flying pig is manufactured at La Gran Fabrica Drew Estate in Esteli, Nicaragua. The Undercrown Maduro features a Mexican San Andres Maduro wrapper, Connecticut Stalk Cut and Sun cured Habano binder, and Brazilian Mata Fina and Nicaraguan Habano filler leaves. The Undercrown Shade Flying Pig features an Ecuadorian Connecticut Shade wrapper over a Sumatra binder with Dominican and Nicaraguan Filler leaves. The Undercrown Sun Grown features a Sun Grown Sumatra wrapper with a Connecticut River Valley Stalk Cut and Sun Cured Habano binder with fillers from Nicaragua. Packaged in 12 count boxes with an MSRP of $152.64 with a total annual production of 2500 boxes.

A 1502, a Partagas, a Liga Privada and a Bunch of News Items

I received a whole bunch of interesting announcements and news items this week, and, while I’m sure you’ll see them elsewhere in the blogosphere also, I feel compelled to include some of the more interesting items here today. The fist item comes from Abe Dababneh of Smoke Inn. I’ll be interested to see what they have up their sleeves. The press release reads:

Enough of the news stuff, let’s get on to the cigars! Sunday I took a walk with a 1502 Black Gold. I was overly impressed with this when I smoked it back in October, and my opinion hasn’t changed. This is a big, box pressed torpedo with a dark, rich maduro wrapper. This manufacturer wraps the wrapper over the foot of the cigar so when you light it you get a blast of flavor. This is a neat little touch that sets this cigar apart. The dark, rich flavors also make this stand out. It’s a terrific smoke. If you see these for sale grab a couple. I know of a few shops in my general area that have them, and I’m sure Enrique Sanchez, the owner of this brand, can point you toward a retailer. He can be found on Twitter at @1502Cigars.

Monday evening my wife and I had a nice dinner at Outback. Sirloin and shrimp, with a little rice and broccoli to chase it down. When I got home I pulled a Partagas Petit Corona Especiale out of the “good” humidor. I figure I need to smoke something out of this humidor once in a while to make sure the cigars aren’t drying out or anything. I bought a box of these a few years ago and have enjoyed many of this little Mareva sized cigar. These are “old school” Havana Partagas, they have a distinctive flavor that you don’t often get in non-Cuban cigars. For a $5 cigar, it’s a treat. Sure, it burned crappy and I had to touch it up a few times, but it was a great smoke after a nice meal.

Tuesday I came across a Drew Estate Liga Privada T52 Belicoso that Steve Saka threw at me at the 2010 IPCPR show. I was astounded when I lit this up and was hit was a flavor reminiscent of Monday evenings Partagas! Remember I said the Partagas had a distinctive flavor? Well it does, but I ran across this same flavor in the T52. which made my day, quite frankly. This shape really was a nice presentation of the T52 line. It was perfectly made, and tasted great. It had a nice long finish that, like the Partagas before it, lasted well into the evening. I really can’t decide if I like the T52 better than the No.9. Know what? I don’t have to decide, because I can like them both the same for different reasons! That’s a beautiful thing about cigars! this T52 was an awesome smoke that I enjoyed until it was about a ¾” little nub.

A Turkeyday Liga Privada T52 and an Alec Bradley Event at Old Havana

After a fine Thanksgiving turkey dinner with my family I figured something a special cigar was in order. I was in a Liga Privada mood, so I was riffling through the Drew Estate box and came across a 6″x 60 Liga Privada T52. Now tell me, what could be better than more of a good thing? Probably just about every other size of the T52! Not that it wasn’t a spectacular cigar, it certainly was! It was loaded with flavor, just not quite the concentration of flavor that the narrower ring gauge T52s present. I enjoyed every last bit of this cigar, but couldn’t help to think that the wrapper to filer ratio just isn’t quite right to showcase the wrapper on the T52 line. I think this came from a goodie bag at a blogger party Drew Estate threw in Vegas at the 2011 IPCPR show. Great cigar, but I’m not really surprised that it isn’t in regular production, but it’s always fun to see how blends translate into different sizes. It’s a cigar I’m glad to have had the chance to try in this format to see the impact that the wrapper has on a blend.

Friday evening I took a drive down to Old Havana Cigar Co. just south of West Chester, PA. for an Alec Bradley event. This shop always has good events and they have a really nice lounge as well as a huge, well stocked humidor. They have food in the lounge and always have quite a crowd. I picked up a couple of American Sun Grown robustos and lit one up. For right around $5 these cant be beat. I think I prefer them over some of the pricier lines. I had a nice time talking with “the Player”, Jonathan Lipson, and hanging out and enjoying my smoke. Since I moved a few months ago I’m a lot farther away from this shop than I used to be, but I’ll make the trip occasionally to catch an event. I ended up with new Connecticut offering from Alec Bradley which I’ll smoke in the not too distant future (maybe today).

Last night, after a two day battle with a migraine, I went for a favorite, a Gurkha Seduction Robusto. This is an excellent smoke that I really like and didn’t have to think to hard about, I could just enjoy it . A year ago I don’t think I’d even had a Gurkha cigar, and now I find that I have a handful floating around the humidors. So far the Seduction is my favorite, but I have a bunch more to sample. I’ll wait until the weather is nicer though as the all seem to be toro sized!

I hope everyone had a fine Thanksgiving and is ready for the start of my 12 Days of Spectacular Giveaways coming up in a few short weeks! It’s looking like it’s going to be even better than last year! I’m going to go string some more lights outside after I send a few e-mails lining up stuff for the contests.

A Namakubi, a Guillermo Leon and a Liga Privada

Sunday was a beautiful day, and we had plans to attend our grand-daughter’s first birthday party at my daughter’s house. After I finished publishing Sunday’s installment, I had just enough time to relax in the sunshine with a cigar. This was one of those circumstances where the cigar selection is very important, too large a cigar and there’s not enough time to finish. Fortunately, I had picked up a couple small Room 101 Namakubis a few weeks back at an event at one of the local shops. I selected the Roxxo for the morning smoke and it was terrific. It’s a 4″ x 48 stubby robusto, made in the Camacho factory, a Ecuador Habano wrapper around Honduran and Dominican fillers. Such a great size for an hour in the sunshine on a Sunday morning with a cuppa joe. It had just the right balance of spice and sweetness. Really a nice little cigar, I think I liked it better than it’s little bro, the Papi Chulo. Two thumbs up.

Monday was actually my grand-daughter’s birthday, and we had such fun watching her at her party digging into her cake! You may recall, a year ago I celebrated her birth at the Wooden Indian in the town where my daughter lives with Guillermo Leon himself. I had picked up a couple of his Guillermo Leon Signature Corona Gordas and decided that it would be the perfect cigar to mark the occasion. A year of age hasn’t hurt this particular example, it was a tasty smoke. I love the 6″ x 47 size of these and it burned very nicely. While I don’t generally gravitate toward the flavor profile that comes out of the La Aurora factory, I certainly need to re-think that, because I’m enjoying more and more cigars that come from there, and have always had a soft spot for them. It goes back to my first box of cigars being La Aurora Bristol Especiales, purchased largely because my daughter’s name is Aurora. I will always try cigars from La Aurora based on that small fact, and I’ll always find something to enjoy about the experience. Always well made, and the Guillermo Leon Signature will forever remind me of the day my first grand child was born.

Tuesday evening turned out to be a nice, warm spring evening, so I felt like digging into my dwindling supply of Liga Privada cigars, and came up with a T52 Robusto. I probably purchased this at an event a few years ago, so it was not without a bit of age. I love it when a cigar is perfectly flat when you tap off the ash. It’s a testament to the blender that he can select tobaccos that all burn at the same rate. Astounding. really, after having seen how differently various leaves burn. Some leaves burn up almost immediately upon being lit (seco leaves) and others (ligero) smolder and barely burn at all. It’s truly a miracle. Anyway, I’m always impressed with a Liga Privada, and the T52 is no different. One of the few cigars I’ll spend $10+ dollars on, and I don’t do it often. An hour and a half or so of satisfying relaxation in robusto form!
