The Week in Cigars, Liga Privada Contest Winner Announcement – Monday May 10, 2010

Here’s a little recap of what I smoked over the past few days:  Friday night brought nice weather, and a Flyers playoff game that needed watching.  I lit up a ITC 10th Anniversary lonsdale for the game.  I had been looking forward to smoking this, since I really liked the Indian Tabac line when it came out.  Oddly, Rocky Patel’s cigars have been few and far between in my humidors for whatever reason and I’ve gotten away from the brand.  I know Rocky Patel is the hot ticket in the cigar world, but I just haven’t jumped on that particular bandwagon.  I admit I was expecting something different in the ITC.  I found it to be very strong and harsh, when I expected something smooth and creamy.  Maybe I just expect an elegant smoke from a cigar with two bands, I don’t know.  It burned well and after while the harshness subsided a bit, but it was still a full bodied cigar.  I’ll have to try another one sometime with the expectation that it will be a strong cigar.  It just caught me off guard and wasn’t what I was expecting or looking for at the time.  If I had done my homework I would have picked out something different.  Another thanks to Jason for the opportunity!

The rest of the weekend cigars were ones I’ve discussed here before.  Saturday’s was a very nice Chateau Real Maduro and Sunday’s was a Hoyo de Tradicion Toro.  It was really windy all weekend which reduces the enjoyability of smoking outside. These are both cigars I enjoy quite a bit, the Chateau Real for it’s coffee and cocoa and it’s excellent construction and the Hoyo for it’s mellow chocolaty flavors.

For Mother’s Day I grilled up some shrimp and salmon for my beautiful wife (who has had a rough few weeks taking care of here parents and really deserved to be taken care of  for a while).  The kids pitched in and we had no shortage of tasty food. I used the Punch Grill Box.  I picked up some mesquite chips and it seemed to work, not that there’s a whole heck of a lot that can go wrong with such a thing.  I’ll probably be using this a lot this summer.

I’m sure everyone is saying “CigarCraig, c’mon man, who won the Liga Privada Sampler?”  Well, the response was excellent and I got some really good guesses.  After I started seeing the guesses I realized that I may have a problem selecting a winner.  I decided the only way to determine a winner when no-one guessed the right numbers was to add both temperature and relative humidity together and select the winner that way.  Thanks to all who entered and I hope the new readers stick around a while.  The cooler’s hygrometer (which, incidentally, I recently found in a box and put in a fresh battery) read 62% RH and 66°F for a total of 128.  The closest guess was 65% and 67° for a total of 132 by Joel Scott.  Congratulations and please e-mail your snaily so I can mail this beautiful box of Liga Privada No.9 cigars out to you.  Remember the rule:  If you enter a contest, you have to take the prize!

That’s it for now, until the next time,

CigarCraig

Weekend Cigars: Perdomo and Cameroon Especial – Sunday April 18, 2010

This week I dug into a bunch of cigars my friend Jason, the owner of Rock’s Smoke Shop in East Stroudsburg, PA, sent me a while ago.

Thursday I lit up a Perdomo 2 Limited Edition 2008 Maduro Torpedo.  I’ve never smoked a lot of Perdomo products, I like the Lot 23, and I remember liking a square pressed maduro perfecto that was around quite a while ago.  This cigar was very nice.  I enjoyed the nice, even burn and tasty earthy flavor.  Nice cigar, thumbs up!

Saturday I grabbed a Cameroon Especial Torpedo.  I have had one of these before and it was an OK cigar.  I had picked one up at a local shop that I don’t often patronize.  At the time I was looking for something inexpensive and the Cameroon Especial was about the only cigar in the shop that was under $5.00, so I thought it was worth a try.  I love Cameroon wrapped cigars for the most part.  It wasn’t until I started preparing to write this that I found out that this is actually a Rocky Patel product.  These come in bundles of 20 and a little poking around revealed that these are a long filler cigar.  I would have guessed they were mixed filler by the way the ash fell.  These are nice, reasonably priced cigars.

Thanks to Jason for providing me with a nice variety of cigars to smoke and talk about here!  If you find yourself in the Pocono mountains of Pennsylvania hunt down his shop.  He has a very nice selection and lounge area. I will continue working my way through those cigars and reporting my findings here.

In the News

As I’m sure everyone has heard by now, yesterday saw the passing of the legendary Cuban tobacco grower Alejandro Robaina.  I can’t add any more than has already been reported, so here are a few links to articles about his death:

Cigar Weekly – Don Alejandro Robaina Dies

CNN – ‘Godfather’ of  Cuban Tobacco Dead at 91

BBC – Cuban Cigar Legend Dies at 91

In other news, the city of Philadelphia is trying to enact a city tax on cigars.   Another bad idea from city council, which the author admits will not really make a dent in the budget deficit.  Another tax that will hurt local businesses much more than it will help the city.

On the other hand Voice of America has a nice article on Ybor City in Florida including a nice video.

Don’t forget to have a look at the video I posted earlier today selecting the winner of a Drew Estate cap and Liga Privada cutter.  I will be having another give-away real soon so keep an eye out!

Until the next cigar,

Rocky Patel Lancero Review and JdN Contest Winner Announcement! March 14, 2010

Last night I had the pleasure again of going to the cigar friendly Downingtown Hotel to see my good friend Greg’s band, Now and Then.  I took a bunch of cigars along, hoping that the few friends I’d invited would show up.  Unfortunately my friends were unable to make it,  but I was able to enjoy a terrific Rocky Patel The Edge Maduro Lancero while rocking to the band.  I love the lancero format, (7″ x 38) it really forces you to slow down and enjoy the pleasant cocoa and coffee flavors of this cigar. Lanceros need to be “sipped” to be enjoyed or one runs the risk of overheating the cigar.   I managed to nurse it through almost 3 sets before giving up. I believe this cigar to be a Famous Smoke Shop exclusive but I received it as a gift.  I haven’t really smoked a lot of the Rocky Patel offerings for no particular reason, but I very much enjoyed this particular cigar.

I’ve recently come across Cigar Films (cigarfilms.com) and started watching the videos.  I’ve only watched a couple so far but I’ve found them entertaining.  Give them a look if you are a fan of cigar related videos.

Now, what everyone has been waiting for: the announcement of the winner of the Joya de Nicaragua Antaño 5 pack.  Please watch this short video:

Congratulations to the winner, please e-mail me at craig@cigarcraig.com with your mailing address so that I can get your prize out this week!

Thanks to everyone for participating.  This is the first of many contests sponsored by my friends at Drew Estate!  I appreciate their support!

The background music on the video is “Redemption” from the 25 Smokin’ Figurados album “Divine Spirits, Holy Smoke”.  Great stuff! Thanks Gregg and Tim!

That’s it for now!  Until the next cigar,

CigarCraig
