Weekend Cigars: Camacho, Punch, JdN, Ashton and Wooden Indian Grand Opening – July 11, 2010

Thursday evening I grabbed the Camacho SLR Maduro Rothschild I mentioned had been teasing me in my last post.  What a nice cigar, rich maduro flavor and and even burn.  I’ve been a fan of Camacho cigars since way before the Corojo hit the market. My only complaint was that it was too short, but that’s not the cigar’s fault.  Very enjoyable cigar for a walk around the block followed by sitting on the front porch.

Friday I went with a Punch Magnum.  I had forgotten how much I enjoy the regular Punch line.  This had been included with the Punch Smoker Box along with 3 other cigars.  I was in the mood for something that I wouldn’t have to think too hard about.  With all of the boutique cigars on the market, most of which are very good, but on the pricey side, it’s nice to know the old school standards still deliver on taste and construction.

Saturday I took a ride toward Philadelphia to Havertown, PA where The Wooden Indian Tobacco Shop was having their grand opening.  They moved from a fairly small shop tucked in the corner of a large shopping center to a much larger store just down the street.   The Drew Estate crew (consisting of David Lafferty, Mike Staiber and Kevin McCormack) were on hand to celebrate the opening of one of two Liga Privada lounges (the other being at Leaning House Cigars out near Pittsburgh). The store also has a very roomy walk-in humidor whch was reasonably well stocked, although there were a lot of empty boxes on the shelves, a trend I’ve noticed in most shops I’ve visited in the last year or so.  It was a rainy day, which may have accounted for the huge crowd in the store.  I picked up a couple of Joya de Nicaragua Cabinetta Serie as they are priced reasonably and are nice cigars.  I smoked a Toro while I was there and noted the same thing as when I previously smoked this:  the maduro wrapper is just a mouthpiece, looks terrific, but doesn’t burn worth a damn.  The cigar just stops burning when it gets to this point.  Back to the event.  I spent some time with my butt parked in one of about 6 leather couches in the lounge, talking with an old friend of mine, Eric, whom I knew from the old cigar newsgroup days.  We enjoyed our cigars in the lounge while he told me about his “humanitarian” trip to Cuba.  It was nice seeing some acquaintances I hadn’t seen in a while, and meeting David and Kevin face to face.  They had the grill going with dogs and sausages outside under a tent, the hot dog I had was delicious. Our local Cigar Rights of America ambassador, Alan Price, was on hand pitching the CRA and signing up new members. I unfortunately forgot my camera, so I didn’t get any photos of the place.

Later in the evening we went to our next door neighbors who were having a graduation party for their daughter.  Several of the neighbor guys were in a corner of the deck smoking cigars so I, naturally, went to say hello.  Robert, our former next door neighbor, had actually been to the Wooden Indian after I had left and had distributed some Ashton Cabinets to the other guys.  I joined in with an Ashton VSG Belicoso from my humidor.  The odd thing about Robert and I crossing paths at the Wooden Indian is that Havertown is about 40 minutes from my home, and Robert and his family moved about 30 minutes in the opposite direction, and it has been several years since we saw one another.  Small world.  I enjoyed the heck out of the aged VSG and since I was a little late to the party I handed out a couple cigars to keep things going. I finished off the evening with a little Montecristo Purito.

All in all it was a pretty good cigar weekend.  Lots of cigar related fraternizing.

Until the next time,

CigarCraig

Weekend Cigars: La Aurora, Liga Privada, Esperanza – June 20, 2010

Today was Father’s Day, and leading up to it, I managed to smoke a few cigars this weekend.

Friday started the weekend with a La Aurora 1495 Robusto.  This cigar was well made and burned and drew nicely.  I didn’t particularly care for the flavor.  It had a rustic Ecuadoran Sumatra wrapper, which I verified through a brief exchange with La Aurora company president Guillermo Leon via Twitter.  I was actually unaware that this was also offered in Cameroon, Corojo and Brazilian maduro until Guillermo asked me which wrapper it was.  I think I would like this in any of these other 3 wrappers over the one I smoked.  It’s pretty special to be able to communicate with someone of Señor Leon’s stature so quickly and easily, something that was not so easy in years past.  Most people involved in the cigar business are very approachable, but to have almost instant access is pretty cool!

Saturday my daughter and her husband took us out to the Longhorn Steakhouse for dinner.  After a great meal, which I partook of all 4 food groups (Filet, bacon wrapped scallops, and a piece of chicken from my wife’s salad), we came home and my children presented me with a very exciting Father’s Day gift.  They established a bank account for me to use to save up for a trip to Drew Estate’s Cigar Safari!  What a great gift and they even chipped in cash to get me started.  Now I just have to get to saving up so I can go to Nicaragua and visit the Drew Estate factory!  I had chosen a cigar to smoke after that great dinner, but quickly put it away and decided a Liga Privada No.9 Parejo since it seemed much more appropriate.  The cigar was exceptional as usual.  These are amazing cigars which are satisfying and delicious while not being overwhelming.  For those who don’t know, the Liga Privada line was blended as the personal cigar for company president Steve Saka.  I first became acquainted with Steve through the alt.smokers.cigars Usenet group in 1996.  He was a prolific poster on that group for many years until he took a job with JR’s Cigars, then eventually became president of Drew Estate.  He rarely is seen without a Liga Privada clenched in his jaw.  This is a cigar that is so smooth and satisfying that you really could smoke them all the time.  A tremendous cigar that I reserve for special occasions.

Since purchasing a box of Esperanza Para los Niños in 2000 for Father’s day I have smoked one of these every year since.  The cigar is a beautiful box pressed maduro that was made by Christian Eiroa of Camacho to raise money for children orphaned by Hurricane Mitch, which devastated Honduras in 1998.  Christian was an active contributor to alt.smokers.cigars at the time and brought several people to his facility to work on the blend for this cigar, with the proceeds going to charity.  They came up with this amazing blend and sold 45,000 cigars through their dedicated website.  I purchased a box of toros, of which I have one left after smoking and gifting them sparingly over the years.  Tonight I smoked a Chruchill which was gifted to me by a good friend who won a box a few years ago and knew that they were very special to me.  Oddly, the several cigars I’ve smoked over the past few years from this batch have been wonderful, lush and heavy maduro cigars, but when approaching the band have hit an almost amonia stretch.  I find this odd in a twelve year old cigar.  Still, this remains a special cigar to celebrate Father’s Day with, and I will continue to do so for the next few years.  That last toro will be the last to go, probably close to two decades after it was rolled.

I’m quite pleased to note that CigarCraig.com has risen two places on CigarTopsite.com from 19 to 17 in the past couple weeks.  Thank you very much to all of the folks who’ve paid a visit and mentioned and linked to the site.  This is something I enjoy writing, and it humbles me to know that there are folks who check in on a regular basis.  A Thank You is also due to my lovely bride who got me started on this and puts up with my obsession!  Keep an eye open for another contest coming up soon as July closes in on us!

Until the next time,

Weekend Cigars and a Drew Estate Liga Privada Contest! – Sunday May 2, 2010

Saturday evening I selected a CAO Mx2 Rob for my evening walk.  My wife had gotten me a selection of CAO cigars for Valentines day and this was among them.  It was a robusto, and pretty much everything a maduro cigar should be.    The combination of Connecticut broadleaf wrapper and Brazillian maduro binder really overwhelm the palate with  bitter coffee and cocoa.

This afternoon, while pressure washing my in-laws deck, I lit up a Maria Mancini Robusto Larga. This cigar served as an insect repellent as well as an enjoyable smoke.  While not as smooth as those that I’ve had with several years of age, it was still a tasty and well made cigar, which held up well to the rigors of outdoor work. This remains among my favorite cigars at any price and I have always had these in my humidor in one vitola or another.

My 20 year old son and I had exchanged text messages on Friday when he mentioned that he and his friends took a trip to Holt’s (they go to Drexel) and he had purchased and smoked a Liga Privada T52.  He picked this out based on having heard about them from me.  I don’t keep track of what he’s smoking, he started out just after his 18th birthday, with a Romeo y Julieta Coronitos en Cedro at his sister’s wedding.  He said he really loved that cigar, as he was turning seven shades of plaid after smoking it.  When he told me he smoked the T52 I told him that it should have made him vomit, but he said it was amazing.  That’s the word he kept using: “amazing”.  So, it that spirit, I selected a Liga Privada No. 9 for tonight’s smoke.

The Liga Privada No. 9 was blended for the personal use of Steve Saka, president of  Drew Estate. It has a Connecticut broadleaf wrapper and a five tobacco filler blend.  It’s a great cigar, very rich and satisfying.  The burn was as even as they come and it burned for a long time.  Delicious!  It’s no wonder Steve is rarely seen without one of these in his mouth.

Also in that spirit, I’d like to announce this month’s contest.  I have a really good prize for the winner this time.  It’s a five cigar Liga Privada Sampler courtesy of Drew Estate.  Here are the rules:  Leave a comment here with your guess as to what the digital hygrometer in my 48 quart Coleman Coolerdor reads.  I’ll post a photo of it when I announce the winner.  Contest ends Sunday, May 9.  Your guess should include both the temperature and humidity.  Any tie will be broken by cat selection.  I’m tempted to offer a bonus if someone guesses exactly, but the prize itself is pretty fantastic!

So tell your friends, spread the word, subscribe to my e-mails, follow me on twitter…..someone is going to get a nice five pack of Liga Privadas!

Until next time,

CigarCraig

Mid-week Cigar musings, Hoyo de Tradicion – Wednesday April 14, 2010

Last week I received an e-mail out of the blue from Victoria McKee Jaworski, the Director of Public Relations for General Cigar, asking me if she could put me on her mailing list.  Of course I said “heck yeah”, and sent her the requested information.  Monday a package shows up containing a very nice box of Hoyo de Tradicion Toros.  I smoked one last night and it was a fine cigar, burned straight, didn’t give me any trouble, and had some very nice flavors. Here’s some information from the press release:

Hoyo de Tradición™ pays homage to Hoyo de Monterrey’s time-honored taste in a new expression made of proprietary tobaccos from the world’s most revered growing regions.

According to Modesta Fondeur, executive vice president of tobacco and operations, “Born of volcanic soil into a pedigree of tobacco exclusive to General Cigar, Hoyo de Tradición’s blend consists of hand-selected Honduran San Agustin, and Dominican Piloto Cubano leaves, which are married to Nicaraguan tobacco from the remote island of Ometepe.  Bound with a robust Habano leaf from Connecticut, Hoyo de Tradición is adorned with a Honduran Jamastran Viso Rosado wrapper.”

Rick Chandler, the brand’s director of marketing remarks, “In Hoyo de Tradición, we have developed a cigar that respects Hoyo de Monterrey’s inherent natural sweetness and aroma, while creating a unique new tradition unto its own.  A medium-bodied offering that emphasizes and embellishes Hoyo’s traditional taste profile, Hoyo de Tradición is poised to take its place among the most established cigar brands. We feel that the line will be readily adopted into the smoking repertoires of today’s aficionado.”

I don’t typically smoke a cigar right off the truck, but these looked so good I had to try one.  These will, no doubt, improve with age.  Keep an eye out for these in future contests, I want to spread the wealth!

In the News:

Last time I pointed out the article in Parade Magazine, this time I’m pointing you toward an article on Forbes site that actually takes the stance that other tobacco products, while not safe, are safer alternatives to cigarettes and should be promoted as such.  It’s refreshing to see a major media outlet defending non-cigarette tobacco products.  Here’s the link:  http://www.forbes.com/forbes/2010/0426/opinions-steve-forbes-fact-comment-what-are-zealots-inhaling.html?partner=email.

Also, for the Pennsylvania readers, I just received an e-mail from Dave Mayer,  the proprietor of Wooden Indian Tobacco Shop in Havertown, PA,  announcing that their new store will include one of two Liga Privada lounges. The other Lounge will be across the state at Leaning House Fine Cigars in the Pittsburgh area.  I look forward to visiting the new store when it opens and seeing the new lounge.  I’m sure it will be as good as it’s namesake.

Speaking of Drew Estate, the current contest closes Saturday, and I’ll be announcing the winner on Sunday.  If you haven’t entered already, leave a reply to the contest posts (here) to enter to win a cool DE cap and a Liga Privada cutter.

Until the next cigar,

Slow Cigar Week – Pollen Kills The Urge – Thursday April 8, 2010

My nice new black Toyota Yaris is dusted yellow from the pollen and my sinuses are a mess.  I managed to revisit a cigar on Monday that I really didn’t enjoy the first time around, but this time it wasn’t all that bad.  The cigar was a Rebel’s Choice corona that I had picked up at CigarCigars in Phoenixville, PA last October.  I can’t imagine that 6 months of age made any difference, I attribute the bad experience I had previously to a flue shot I had received.  This wasn’t a bad cigar, fairly mild, but well behaved and inoffensive. Not a bad $1.95 cigar, I retract my previous opinion that I wouldn’t recommend this at any price. Next time I get a flue shot I won’t waste five perfectly good cigars!

The current issue of Smoke Magazine arrived today and, while I haven’t had the chance to peruse it yet, I did notice an interview with Steve Saka of Drew Estate by noted cigar author Frank  Seltzer.  Like I said, haven’t read past the first page, but there’s a nice photo of Steve in the Gran Fabrica.  Cigar Safari is on my list of future vacation spots!

Don’t forget to enter the current contest!  The cats are looking forward to selecting the winner, and, if you have ever had a cat, you know how ridiculous a statement that is! Anyway, it’s a great Drew Estate hat and a really cool Liga Privada cutter, so get your name in the ring!

Until the next cigar, which will hopefully be soon,

CigarCraig
