A Quick Trip to Miami, El Titan, KMA Talk Radio, Etc.

I don’t get away much, but when an opportunity comes up to take a quick vacation and slip in some cigar stops, we have to take it!  I’ve wanted to have a vacation where we just spend some time doing nothing but relaxing on a beach for years, and we spent a few days doing just that. Having a cigar on the beach in the morning was nice, although it was windy, which created some challenges! We stayed a block from the beach in Miami Beach, so it was a quick walk, and the water was warm! I really enjoyed a DOn Juan Calavera Connecticut and n Umbagog on the beach! Friday we took a drive and dropped in on Joe Gro at Drew Estate‘s offices, which had an “out for lunch” sign on the door, which was initially disappointing, although we did just drop by. We were hoping to surprise CigarProp Kevin and Jessica there, but they ran ahead of schedule and left just before we arrived. We finally gained access and caught up with Joe, who gave us the tour. The warehouse there is enormous, loaded with racks of pallets of cigars. The offices are as you’d expect, decorated with all of the great DE swag, and the places where all the creative magic happens. As I said, many were out to lunch, so it wasn’t buzzing with activity, but there were a few familiar faces there! Thanks Joe!

We left Drew Estate to try to catch up with  Kevin And Jessica in Little Havana. I know that I could spend a week in Miami and not visit all of the cigar places I would like to see, or see all of the people I want, but this was a short trip. If there was one place to visit in Little Havana, I figured it would be El Titan de Bronze. We arranged to meet up with the CigarProps there. This is where one of my favorite cigars is (was?) made, and many great cigars are made. It’s amazing how many amazing cigars this little factory makes, considering they have eight rollers. We were fortunate to gain audience with Sandy Cobas, who gave us a tour. What a wonderful woman! She welcomed us and treated us like family and we couldn’t have been more fortunate. She showed us the aging rooms, introduced us to her mother, who was working packaging cigars and was very funny. They recommended a wonderful restaurant where we went to a late lunch/early dinner which was very good and we had a nice stroll along Calle Ocho. I always enjoy the times I can spend with my friends Kevin and Jessica. Even though we didn’t get around to enjoying a cigar together this time, it’s always a treat to catch up.

Quick aside, because I know Kevin is a Fan of the Govee sensors too, Amazon’s  Deal of the Day next Wednesday, September 18th is the following two Govee thermometers. They will be 30% OFF directly without coupon code that day.

I actually really like the Mini Bluetooth one a lot, I have two now and might pick up another one at this price. I have to replace the battery in the WiFi one, I’ve been lazy. They just work. I get nothing out of this, just passing it along. IF you ever want me to get something out of an amazon purchase, there’s a link on the right sidebar, but the next purchase through an affiliate link will be the first!

Friday evening I had the honor and pleasure of meeting up with a couple of great friends that I hadn’t met yet at a lounge close to where I was staying called Cigar Cigar (which is funny, because the chain of stores near my house is called Cigar Cigars). I enjoyed the company of PJ and René and several of their friends while smoking a cigar that I was able to light and smoke without being blown all over the place in the wind! PJ has been a long time reader and I’m sure you’ve seen his comments here and on other popular sites!  He was overly generous and it was the highlight of my trip meeting him and René and Juan Nuñez and enjoying a cigar with them in that comfortable lounge. Thank you, PJ, for setting that up! I see, perhaps, some mermaids in your future…
Before leaving, we took a drive up to West Palm Beach, which, by the way, is not at all on the way to the Miami Airport from Miami Beach! That’s OK, it was worth the drive to visit with my friends Abe, Adam and Paul and be a guest on KMA Talk Radio again. I was also happy to finally meet Rich Otero of PDR Cigars, who was the special guest on the episode. I was glad to talk to Coop briefly too, he was kind in the lies he told about me 😆. I always get nervous doing these shows, and I hope for the best when I put myself out there. It was fun, I probably didn’t get close enough to the mic most of the time, and, as usual, I had trouble getting a word in edgewise. Hopefully I said what I needed to say and didn’t sound too ridiculous. If you want to laugh, listen to last week’s episode with Jack Toraño, that was the funniest episode I’ve heard in a long time! That guy is a real man of genius!  Anyway, I really appreciated Abe and Paul letting me weasel my way onto the show, they were very accommodating!
Today is a recovery day and then it’s back to work tomorrow! Thanks to everyone, especially my wife, for making it a great vacation!  That’s all for today, until the next time,

Several years ago Abe at Smoke Inn, a chain of ten (or eleven?) stores in Florida, launched his Microblend series. He’s had some of the greatest cigar manufacturers on the planet making small batch, store exclusive cigars for him, including Fuente, Padron, Tatuaje, et cetera. This year Abe has provided two ten count packages of his most current Microblend releases,  the Illusione Pactum and the Pope of Greenwich Village from Drew Estate.  The Pactum is a 5½” x 56 San Andrés wrapped robusto with high priming Nicaraguan filler, a Box of 15. The Pope of Greenwich Village is 6″ x 40, and has the San Andrés wrapper also, with a Connecticut Stalk-Cut Habano binder and fillers of Brazilian Mata Fina and Nicaraguan tobaccos and comes in a bundle of 10.  They both sound delicious, don’t they?  Thanks to Abe and his Smoke Inn staff for sending these along.  Abe also has a weekly radio show and podcast, Kiss My Ash Radio, which broadcasts every Saturday at 10am Eastern, check it out. Steve Saka is the special guest on today’s show.

This is going to cause some confusion….Yesterday’s winner of the Punch Signature Robustos from General Cigar Co. is Eric.  I know there were at least two Eric’s who entered, so it’s the one who didn’t use his full name (sorry Eric W! Try again today). So the Eric who posted around 11:46 AM EST yesterday needs to send me his info. I smoked one of these last night (not from your box!) and it’s a really nice smoke, sweet tobacco goodness and great construction. Thanks to Victoria and all the folks at General Cigar Co.!

You know what to do now, leave a comment here, check back tomorrow to see if you won!

The Happy New Year Roberto P. Duran and Assorted Goodies Contest!

I’m sure you’re all tired of cigar giveaways by now, but Jack Toraño at Roberto P. Duran Cigars wanted to get in on the 12SDoCG, and I was full up! Also, I had some extra goodies around that I wanted to find a good home for, so the winner of this event will receive two  shipments, the cigars from Roberto P. Duran in Florida, and one from me.  I’m also going to try out something new (to me), using RaffleCopter to picke my winner.  I’ve included several ways to enter, the usual “leave a comment here”, which is mandatory, visiting my Facebook page, and a daily Tweet option.  More chances to win at the expense of simply signing up for Rafflecopter, which you may already have done!

The Prizes!

From Roberto P. Duran Cigar Company we have a box of the Roberto P. Duran Premium Rio Toa, a beautiful 5″ x 52 Robusto with a Ecuador Habana Criollo wrapper, Nicaraguan binder and a blend of Nicaraguan and Latin American tobaccos in the filler.  I’ve smoked this in the 6″ x 60 size and it’s a very, very good cigar.  In addition to the cigars, I have a Kiss My Ash Radio Ashtray and Cap, a Liga Privada #9 cap from Drew Estate, some hard to find Two Guys Smokeshop and The Cigar Authority caps, The Jet Bag cigar bag, a four pack of Cuba Classic “eau de toilette” men’s cologne, and maybe some cigars and other goodies that might fall into the box while I’m packing it!

Day 2 is in the books and we are going to keep forging ahead!  I’m up at the crack of dawn on a Saturday and can’t think of anything to write, so the winner of the Drew Estate present is Matt Henrich! Many thanks again to all the folks at Drew Estate for providing these gifts!

Smoke Inn

Day 3 brings us to the fine folks at Smoke Inn and Kiss My Ash Radio.  Since today is Saturday, if you are reading this early enough, you can tune into Kiss My Ash radio and listen live at KissMyAshRadio.com from 10am to noon Eastern Standard Time, or download the podcast and listen whenever you want. Abe at Smoke Inn has provided two boxes from his Microblend series, the 601 La Bomba Bunker Buster, a 5½ x 56 box pressed Figurado (box of ten) and the Quesada Oktoberfest Dunkel, which is a Broadleaf wrapped version of the Oktoberfest line (box of 15).  These are both delicious, both limited production and will look great sitting on the rim of the huge KMA Ceramic Ashtray. A KMA cap rounds out today’s present.  Could I have split this up into two spectacular days? Sure, but whats the fun in that? Thanks to Abe and his gang at Smoke Inn and Kiss My Ash Radio!

First Cigars of 2014: a La Palina, a Cain and a Los Blancos Nine

I see it’s going to be one of those winters!  We’ve already had about 4 snowstorms, and we’re seeing single digit temps for the first time in quite a few years.  I yearn for spring! I would rather smoke cigars without gloves and six layers! I have no problem going to any one of a number of local shops in the area, but that gets expensive, and I’ve got a ton of cigars here at home that need smoking.  Of course, when I go to a shop I can’t just buy one cigar and smoke it, I have to buy two, then something else catches my eye and I CE&M_Vanadiumhave to get two of them. It gets hard to keep up!  Then, I do something stupid like buy a box of cigars just because I dig the box and I think it’ll look good on the bookcase! Not only do I buy the box, but I add on a five-pack too! (remember the Famous-Smoke.com coupon codes folks!)  It’s crazy. At some point I send a bunch to Cigars for Warriors and give a bunch away, so it all works out, I suppose. Where was I going with this?  Oh, it’s been wicked cold (as they say in New England) here in PA.  Let’s see if that slows me down any…

La Palina Maduro Petite LanceroNew Years Day 2014. We had my daughter’s family over to watch the Winter Classic which was fun.  I spent more time playing with my grand-daughters than watching the game, but it looked like a great game with stoppages every so often to shovel the snow off the ice!  After they took off, I grabbed a cigar I’d been looking forward to smoking and took the dog for a walk.  The La Palina Maduro has been a favorite of mine since it came out last year. I was excited when a pair of Petite Lanceros showed up in my mailbox, and equally excited when I saw them on the shelf at Cigar Mojo last week (good to know a source of supply just in case I fall in love, right?).  It seemed like a good cold weather choice, easy to handle with gloves, strong enough in flavor.  I may like the larger ring gauge versions of the La Palina Maduro a little better, but this Petite Lancero was loaded with bitter sweet chocolate and coffee and was really quite enjoyable.  For me, I think the larger rings make for a little creamier smoke.  I will pick up a few more to have around, and I’ll look forward to smoking this again in the warmer months.  Quite a good smoke, a great way to start the year.

Cain_Daytona6x46Thursday evening is started snowing, so me and the pup went walking right after dinner. I’ve been in the mood for a Cain of some sort for a while.  Are these falling out of favor?  One of my local shop proprietors was a HUGE fan of these when they came out, now he says he will probably clearance them next month, they aren’t selling. I picked out a Cain Daytona 646, the milder blend in the Cain Line and fired it up.  I love the sweetness of this cigar. I think I only have a 543 and a couple lanceros left floating around the humidors, but the Daytona is my favorite blend o f the line.  I like the others after some aging time, and the Cain F tubed lancero is a clear winner, but the Daytona, to me, has the best balance and flavor.  This cigar was great, although it was better after I put it down for a while to dry out, and re-lit it after shoveling the driveway. The snow didn’t do it any favors, my fault, not the cigars.  I recently lost my local Oliva rep, so if someone from Oliva reads this and wants to chime in on the status of the Cain brand, please feel free!

Saturday morning I had my third appearance on the Kiss My Ash radio show in their “Bloggers Corner”.  It’s always a huge honor for me, and I felt the best about my performance this time.  I chose to resurrect a review of the Cigar Aficionado number one cigar of 2013, the Havana Montecristo No.2 that I did in 1996.  I took part in a Monthly Officious Taste Test on the alt.smokers.cigars Usenet group which was put together by Steve Saka.  This was probably the second monthly installment and this would go on for a few years as a feature on the CigarNexus website of which Steve was a part.  Anyway, I called the Montecristo No.2 a “dogrocket”, which was the lowest possible rating.  I can still remember the cigar as being acrid and nasty like
a pile of burning leaves in the autumn, you know, the wet, musty ones. I wish I had pictures of the cigar from 1996, but that was before digital cameras were anything really, and certainly before cell phones had cameras. Anyway, I though it would be interesting to read that review on the radio in contrast with Cigar Aficionado‘s recent number one rating. In their defense, it must have been a pretty good year for that cigar, as it was number two in Cigar Journal‘s rating, and I have had some spectacular No.2s over the years, but I’ve had some that were so-so too.  I give Cigar Journal some leeway since they are truly an international magazine, but I don’t find that giving a Cuban cigar the number one spot does anything for US readers, and retailers. A high rating is a very big deal as far as sales go for a cigar, it’s a waste for a US based magazine to promote a product that can’t be legally procured.  I’m not even going to get into the fact that this is an 80 year old marque which has been plagued with inconsistency over the years. Enough of that rant, Abe did let out that Steve Saka was going to be doing a regular feature on Kiss My Ash radio, so tune in to see what Steve has to say.  He has a ton of tobacco knowledge and I’m proud to know him for these last 17 years or so.

LosBlanco_Nine RobustoYesterday afternoon, although the temps barely got out of the teens, it turned out to be a nice day for a walk.  I had picked up a couple of Los Blancos Nine robustos Tuesday when I visited my local shop (see first paragraph!).  I’ve certainly know about this brand, and I’ve met David Blanco, but I haven’t smoked any cigars from them. The Nine looked tasty with it’s dark Oscuro Corojo wrapper. It’s a 5″ x 52 robusto with a Jalapa binder and three ligero fillers. This cigar blew me away with it’s flavor and construction. This is the best cigar I’ve smoked all year!  The flavor was bold, which I need in cold weather, and it had the right amount of lush, heavy bitterness that I really enjoy. When I was burning my fingers on the very tiny nub of this cigar I was really glad my compulsion caused me to buy two of these! I can’t wait to smoke the other one.  Damn great smoke and I’ll be looking to sample more form Los Blancos. It’s cool to find an exciting cigar like this one, not that there aren’t a load of great cigars out there, there’s more than ever, but this one was a surprise.

Once again, I’ve rambled on too long.  I’ve got stuff I want to get done today and sitting here writing isn’t going to get those things done.  I’ve got cigars to smoke before Wednesday rolls around!

Until the next time,

CigarCraig
