News: J.C. Newman Cigar Company Launches #BrickHouseAtMyHouse

Here’s a new program from J.C. Newman aimed at helping out the brick and mortar retailers. If you find that you need cigars, give your local shops the first shot. Many are doing curbside delivery or shipping. I’m going to take my evening walk and smoke a Brickhouse cigar.

Amid uncertainty for retailers, and a consumer population practicing social distancing, J.C. Newman Cigar Company is launching #BrickHouseAtMyHouse to bring a sense of normalcy to these unprecedented times.

 

J.C. Newman will be partnering with retailers nationwide to offer a special on Brick House cigars. With every purchase of this deal, consumers will receive five (5) mix and match Brick House cigars, two (2) five-year-aged Brick House Teaser cigars, and a J.C. Newman torch lighter. Consumers will pick up their orders from their favorite retailers and be given instructions on how they can enter the social media component of this promotion.

 

When users on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram post a photo of a Brick House cigar and use the hashtag #BrickHouseAtMyHouse, they will be entered to win a J.C. Newman 125th Anniversary backpack, filled with classic, stay-at-home games like dominoes and crosswords. Nine (9) total winners will be chosen to receive the backpacks, and one grand prize winner will receive the Brick House “Man Cave” chair; a black recliner valued at $1,500.

 

“We are continuing to look at this pandemic with a glass-half-full approach,” said Eric Newman. “If we can help our retailers, and give everyone a reason to relax [with a good cigar] then we are doing our small part.”

 

This promotion launches today, April 21, 2020, and the social media contest will run for two weeks, with winners being chosen on Friday, May 15, 2020.

A Brickhouse Maduro and a Diamond Crown Maduro

I don’t know if I mentioned this before or not, but while I was at the TPE show, I stopped into the J.C. Newman booth and introduced myself to Drew Newman, who’s the fourth generation Newman and General Council with the company. I remembered Drew from the Usenet days when he would post when he was about 16 years old and get a lot of crap for it. He was instrumental in getting the company online in the ’90s when the Cigar Family website and forum was one of the first and biggest out there. Later I was introduced to Drews uncle, Bobby Newman. I was honored to finally meet these gentlemen, as I’m honored to have the support of the company. You can always learn more about the 125 years of history behind the J.C. The Brickhouse Maduro has always been a great smoke, a good tasting cigar at a fair price.  The folks at J.C. Newman asked me to feature the toro in the first quarter of this year, and since the first quarter is quickly drawing to a close, I figured I had better get smoking! Their toro, like many others, is 6” x 52, and it has a dark, oily  Brazilian Arapiraca wrapper over Nicaraguan binder and fillers. These are made in J.C. Newmans’s PENSA factory in Nicaragua. The two samples I smoked over the course of a couple weeks were very consistent. I love the flavor of the Brickhouse Maduro cigars, it’s smooth, rich dark coffee, and it appeals to me.  I’ve had great experiences with the Robusto and Mighty Mighty vitolas, but I think I’m going to have to go out and buy some more of the Toros because the two I smoked both burned funny. Not like a clown, funny, as I was not amused. I had to relight them several times, as if they were not properly humidified, and that wasn’t the case because I checked with the Humidimeter and the two samples were smoked with enough time between them to make a difference. It was disappointing, because the flavor was right, and I really loved smoking the cigars, it was a bit of a struggle keeping them going. Odd, as I’ve always had exceptional construction with Brickhouse cigars. I’ll have to chalk this up to the once in a while inconsistency of a hand made product, but it certainly isn’t going to scare me off of a great brand with great flavor and (generally) great construction. 

To prove that my storage conditions were not at fault in the case of the Brickhouse Maduro Toros, I smoked a Diamond Crown Maduro No. 4 which was stored side by side with the above mentioned cigars and it smoked perfectly. The No. 4 is a  5 ½″ x 54 and is made at Tabacalera A. Fuente.  The wrapper is Connecticut Broadleaf, it has a Dominican binder and the fillers are a secret concoction of 5 different leaves from the Caribbean and Central America. The Diamond Crown and Brick House cigars couldn’t taste more different. Besides the fact that there’s probably a ten dollar or more price difference, the Diamond Crown has a really nice, smooth, rich flavor akin to a Fuente Añejo. For a moment I considered smoking the two cigars side by side for comparison, but that just seemed like an ostentatious display of excess. It’s easy enough to say that the Diamond Crown stands on it’s own as an exceptional cigar! I very much enjoy the original version as I have for 20 years, but, if you know my palate, this Maduro really appeals to me. I’d choose it over a great many super-premium cigars.

A Flor Maya, Some Auction News and Not A Lot Else

Since last I typed here I worked a lot and smoked a little. I had a remarkable RoMaCraft Aquitaine Cranium that was a gift from Patrick when we met up in Miami last month, and a Flor Maya Connecticut from Danli Honduras Tabaco, which I like, but I enjoy the Don Juan Calavera line from them more. Perhaps the Flor Mayas just need some more time in the humidor. There are some really interesting flavors in that cigar, I think it just needs some more time to rest. I’ve really become a fan of this company, they are a relatively unknown brand, and everyone I share their cigars with seem to be impressed. I’m down right enamored with the Don Juan Calavera, to the point where I have to consciously avoid smoking them to the exclusion of everything else in the humidor. This doesn’t happen to me. What all this leads up to is that I’m not coming up with a great deal to write about today! I’d like to point out the new J.C. Newman contest linked in the graphic on the right side of the page. Instead of giving away monthly humidors, they are giving away one big humidor at the end of the year! I do have a question for my readers: did any of you win any of the monthly humidor prizes over the last year? I hope people are entering the contests, don’t embarrass me by not entering!

 

If you follow me on Facebook, you’ll notice a lot of posts about auctions featuring cigar related items. My wife actually follows these, and she came across one coming up in November here in PA that looks interesting and we might try to go if I have the day (or days) off. It’s a two day auction of Coin-op and Advertising in Denver PA, which is near Reading. Day two looks more interesting, as there’s more signs and countertop cigar cutters, although there are some really neat cigar vending machines and trade stimulators on Day one. I have some neat antique cigar items my wife has bought in these auctions in my collection. 

 

I’m out of stuff to write and I need to go to work. I have some new-to-me cigars to smoke that I’ll try to get to this week, and a new toy to play with and report on in the near future. So, until the next time,

A Local Cigar Lounge Visit, a Brick House and a Diamond Crown

Wednesday I took a ride to a newer shop and lounge in nearby Upper Chichester, PA, The Hideout.  This aptly named shop is nestled in a carwash building and wasn’t easy to find. I actually drove past it twice looking for it. Strike that, three times. When I finally found it, I was greeted by John, the shop manager. The store is small with a reasonable selection a Pennsylvania pricing. They are fairly new, so they don’t have a lot of direct accounts, but they had plenty of good cigars to choose from. I picked up some Aganorsa Leaf Habanos and Connecticuts that were on special. The shop and lounge aren’t connected, the lounge is accessed through a door next to the store and is upstairs, and is beautifully appointed. It’s a members lounge, with a $20 purchase giving one a daily pass. There’s a kitchenette, several TVs and a bunch of comfortable leather chairs. There’s also a covered patio in the back. Considering the appearance from the outside, one would never know such an oasis existed behind that plain door. I spent an hour or so enjoying a cigar in the lounge (a Lunatic Maduro perfecto gifted by John, with was quite delicious), as Jack, one of the owners stopped to visit, and John came up to tell me about the YouTube Vodcast he does from the lounge, The Cigar O’Clock Show.  If you can find the Hideout, it’s a nice place to hangout and have a cigar.

 

Friday I smoked a Brick House Maduro Robusto, the 5″ x 54 Brazilian Arapiraca wrapped cigar made in J.C.Newman’s PENSA factory in Esteli.  It’s been a long time since I smoked one of this, and I forgot how much I like this cigar. It might me four years since I had a Brick House Maduro, and then it was the Mighty Mighty, and I liked it. This could actually climb onto my list of those cigars could have in a rotation and smoke regularly. It’s a really delicious maduro cigar with a nice sweetness like rich cocoa.  The construction was excellent with the burn and draw being perfect.  I will definitely stock my humidor with more of these, it will be one of those go-to cigars for sure. I dig it.

 

The Diamond Crown is another cigar I love but I don’t smoke often. I remember smoking the No.2 at a weekend cigar party in Las Vegas in 1998, back when they were only available on the west coast. This is another J.C. Newman cigar, but this one is made by Fuente in the Dominican Republic. When these came out, they were 54 ring gauge, which was huge.  This cigar has a Connecticut wrapper that is fermented twice, and the cigars are aged for five years. Whatever they do to these, they are really tasty, mild cigars. they are smooth, creamy with some sweetness, no real grassy flavor like one often gets with Connecticut Shade cigars. This is another one of those classic cigars that stands the test of time, and seems to taste the same as it did 20 years ago.  I have several cigars I keep on hand that are kind of sentimental, seems like most of them are from the Fuentes for some reason. Interesting!

Tatuaje TAA and Cuesta Rey Cigars and some UK News

Last week when shopping I picked up this year’s Tatuaje TAA release, the 51th, a box pressed robusto, with the “America” in Tobacconist Association of America crossed out on the band and “Mexico” written over it. It also has a sombrero wearing cactus in place of the Native American in the logo. I guess this has a Mexican wrapper! Previous TAA releases have had Connecticut Broadleaf, This years has the San Andrés wrapper over Nicaraguan binder and filler in a 5″ x 52 box pressed robusto. Being a cheapbastid that I am, I’d much prefer the $12 toro over the $12 robusto, but it was my anniversary and I was treating myself. I had a long day Friday, so when I got home late, a shorter cigar was in order anyway, so a good, shorter cigar was a perfect choice. This, my friends, was such a cigar. I like Tatuaje cigars, I like San Andrés cigars, and I really liked this cigar! It checked all the boxes for me, and if it had been a toro it would have been perfect! I even like the box press. It had the espresso with some spice that I like, and a hint of bittersweet chocolate, it was the perfect way to wrap . up the day. I’ve smoked a few of the Tatuaje TAA releases and have yet to be let down.

The Perla del Mar is a nice smoke, and that humidor is pretty sweet. I know Bob Langmaid has probably entered already 😃. Anyway, the folks at J.C. Newman surprised me last week with some goodies, and one item stirred some memories, so I’m compelled to bore you with a tale. When I received a box of ten Cuesta Rey Centenario Pyramid No. 9  it took me back to a cigar event I attended in 1999 in North Carolina. There was a guy there who I had met for the first time who I had only previously known from his usenet newsgroup postings, much like many of the other people on that cigar crawl. Mike was a strong personality, extremely likable and overly generous. I was a young guy, had a young family, and was just starting my cigar  journey, I barely had one humidor at the time! Mike won a box of Cuesta Rey Centenario Pyramid No. 9 and gave it to me. It wasn’t to his liking, or he had plenty and felt like sharing, or whatever the reason, but I was humbled and treasured the gift. At the time, having a box of cigars was very special to me, even a box of ten! So when I received the same box, twenty years later, I was moved. what makes it more special is that Mike had passed away a dozen or so years ago (and he was a few years younger than I), so  I was able to think of Mike again and remember some old times. Last night I smoked one of the Centenario Pyramid No. 9s. It’s been a long, long time since I smoked one, so I can’t really recall if they are the same or not, I have to imagine they are close, just because companies like J.C. Newman are in it for the long haul, and pride themselves n consistency, and it’s made at Tabacalera A. Fuente. I will say that it was a very enjoyable mild to medium cigar. It has a Connecticut Shade wrapper, but it doesn’t taste like a Connecticut shade cigar, if that makes sense. It’s been added to the classic section of my humidor, with some other Fuente cigars. I’m thankful for the chance to remember a departed friend who’s generosity touched me.
