News: Casa Cuevas Releasing Cuevas Reserva Natural and Maduro

Ok, so here’s the funny thing: I have yet to smoke a Casa Cuevas cigar, but I have probably smoked a ton of cigars made by the Cuevas factory! So welcome to the next stop on the pre-IPCPR news train!

Casa Cuevas Cigars, makers of handmade premium cigars to release the Cuevas Reserva Natural and Cuevas Reserva Maduro at the 2019 IPCPR in Las Vegas. The patriarch of the four-generation tobacco family, Luis Cuevas Sr. originally introduced the Cuevas Reserva brand in the early 2000’s and was limited in availability until now.

Luis Cuevas Sr. introduced the Cuevas Reserva brand in the early 2000’s but was faced with a huge dilemma. At that point, it was either take a chance and put forth efforts (and capital) to introduce his own brand, or concentrate on his newly thriving factory, which was blending and rolling quality private label cigars for other companies.

Luis Sr.  decided to sacrifice potential glory for long-term stability for his family. Years later, in 2016, his son Luis Cuevas Jr. convinced his father to create their own line of cigars, Casa Cuevas Cigars. The father and son team decided it was now time for the full-scale distribution of the Cuevas Reserva brand.

The Cuevas Reserva Maduro features a Mexican San Andres wrapper, a Dominican, Pilloto Cubano binder, and Dominican and Nicaraguan (Ometepe) fillers, this blend is a personal favorite of Luis Cuevas Sr. as it boasts a full-flavor smoking experience, in a perfectly balanced medium to full bodied cigar.

The Cuevas Reserva Natural features an Habano binder with a mix of fillers from the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, and the U.S.A., all wrapped in an Ecuadorean Connecticut wrapper. This blend provides a perfectly smooth smoking experience which features nuanced earthy flavors.

President of Casa Cuevas Cigars, Luis Cuevas Jr. stated: “The Cuevas Reserve for my father was supposed to be the Cuevas signature brand back well over a decade ago. As with all things in life, plans always change. I am proud to have worked closely with my father and my son Alec Cuevas, who is now part of the family business recreating this blend.  I am ecstatic that this brand has come full circle, as we can now present it as a family project to the consumer.”

The Cuevas Reserva’s are beautifully packaged in vintage Cuban style 20 count boxes.

Both blends are initially released in three vitolas with more to follow in the future.

News: Altadis U.S.A. Announces H. Upmann Hispaniola by Jose Mendez

Soon I won’t be able too keep up with the news items. Here’s some interesting news out of Altadis USA. The H.Upmann line the produce with AJ Fernandez may be my favorite Altadis product, I’ll be interested in trying this blend as I’m sure it will be quite different!

H. UPMANN HISPANIOLA BY JOSE MENDEZ WILL BE AVAILABLE AT 2019 IPCPR

H. Upmann takes adult consumers on a Dominican voyage

Altadis U.S.A., maker of world-renowned premium cigars, is introducing the newest in the H. Upmann series, the H. Upmann Hispaniola by Jose Mendez. The brand is partnering with Jose Mendez for this special project, which will serve as a passport to the island of Hispaniola.

In 1492 Christopher Columbus came ashore this island and named it Hispaniola (today known as the Dominican Republic and Haiti). Little did Columbus know that he had stumbled upon what would become one of the most important lands in all of tobacco. H. Upmann is paying tribute to this island through this new offering, that features exclusive varieties from the Dominican Republic such as Olor, Pilotico and Andullo tobacco– the last two developed exclusively for Altadis by the Mendez family, the largest tobacco grower in the island.

Andullo tobaccoindigenous to the island of Hispaniola and rarely used for handmade premium cigarsundergoes a specialized fermentation process that helps accentuate the qualities of the leaf.   This tobacco is then used in the filler, which provides the cigar with strength, rich aroma and deep flavor rarely seen in any other tobaccos. The result is a unique smoking experience.

Rafael Nodal, Head of Product Capability for Tabacalera USA. Stated: “Jose Mendez & Co. has an amazing library of rare and special Dominican tobacco. Together with Siegfried Maruschke, grandson of Jose Mendez and President of the company, we have created a cigar which highlights the spirit of Hispaniola and takes us on a journey through the most representative tobacco varieties of the island”

H. Upmann Brand Manager Candela Diaz added, “We are very excited to expand the H. Upmann brand with the help of collaborators, such as Jose Mendez. It was quite the experience to see this ancient andullo tobacco brought back to life; our partners in Jose Mendez have done an outstanding job. We look forward to showcasing this one of a kind cigar in Las Vegas at the 2019 IPCPR, she said.

The H. Upmann Hispaniola is a full-flavored, medium to full bodied cigar that features Dominican fillers and binder within anEcuadorian Sumatra wrapper. The andullo tobacco is mixed within the filler to create a richly complex smoking experience.

The blend will be available in 20 count boxes in three different vitolas.

Robusto, (50 x 5): $8.50

Toro (52 x 6 1/8): $8.95

Belicoso (50 x 6): $8.80

News: Fratello Cigars Announces Navetta Inverso Boxer

I love the Fratello brand, and especially the Boxers. I always get excited when I hear about one of Omars blends coming out in this special size and blend.

Omar de Frias is proud to announce the company’s latest blend, the Fratello Navetta Inverso Boxer. The Inverso Boxer will be making its official debut at this year’s IPCPR Trade Show in Las Vegas. “Similar to the other Boxer blends, we modified the filler blend in the Inverso Boxer to increase in strength and highlight a different flavor profile from its Father the Navetta Inverso.” Said de Frias.

The Inverso boxer will debut at a 6 ¼ x 52 Box Press Torpedo with an MSRP of 13.00 per cigar.
Navetta Inverso features an Habano Nicaragua Wrapper, Habano Ecuador Oscuro Binder and Dominican and Nicaragua Filler tobacco aged for 3 years before being rolled.

Fratello Navetta Inverso was introduced at last year’s IPCPR Trade Show. “Its incredible how our consumers saw clearly how the cigars were different from our original release and helped us brand all our cigars box press cigars as The Boxer” Said de Frias.

News: Black Label Trading Co. Announcing Sixth Morphine Release

More news on a Tuesday, this time it’s the sixth annual release of the Morphine from BLTC. I need to try this one, as I don’t think I’ve smoked a Morphine yet. I don’t know how I feel about the name. I’ve complained about other cigars named after illicit narcotics, and while morphine isn’t one that’s abused on the streets, it still could be taken the wrong way by those who would like to see tobacco abolished. I’d be happy to smoke the cigar and judge it on it’s own merits though! I’ll pick some up when I see them.
Black Label Trading Company is pleased to announce its sixth annual release of MORPHINE: Hand crafted in Esteli, Nicaragua at BLTC’s own factory, Fabrica Oveja Negra.

“I can’t believe it’s been six years since our first Morphine release. To celebrate we have brought back one of my favorite vitolas, the 7″ x 38 Lancero. The other vitolas are old favorites also, the short Robusto and the Box Pressed Corona Gorda. This years vintage is rich and earthy with bold spice on the retro. The key note flavors are raisin, black cherry and a big blast of anise on the finish. This vintage is one of the best yet!” said James Brown, creator of BLTC and partner at Fabrica Oveja Negra.

MORPHINE cigars will be available in limited quantities at select BLTC retailers beginning this week.

Country of Origin: Nicaragua
