Smoking Through The Twisted Tasting Kit From Fox Cigars

Yes, Fox Cigar advertises on this site, but I purchased the Twisted Tasting Kit from them unsolicited, kinda for five reasons. I really like the Araposa Negra, and never mind having one more in the humidor (I’m smoking one now as I type! It’s absolutely delicious!), and I was quite curious to try the other four cigars. I started with the Araposa Blanca, a Fox exclusive made by Black Label Trading Co..  This is the Ecuador Connecticut answer to the Negra, and one thing BLTC does exceptionally well is make aesthetically appealing barber pole cigars. Another thing they do exceptionally well is make great tasting cigars, and this is a great tasting cigar. We know that shade cigars are low on my preference list, but this one was really, really good. It had a wonderful roundness to the flavor, if that makes any sense, it was full flavored without being overpowering, delicious without too much spice, it was very good. I may need to put more of these in the humidor, and I might need to sample Black Label’s other shade offerings.

In addition to the two Fox BLTC exclusives in the Twisted sampler, the other three were new cigars in the Altadis USA line up presented in a barber pole format. Historically I have not gravitated toward a lot of the Altadis cigar that are not made by A.J. Fernandez.  I have a relatively open mind, although I’ll admit there are some cigars I have no interest in even sampling. Legacy brands such as the H.Upmann and Romeo y Julieta don’t fall into that category, I’ll give them a shot, even though I have pretty poor track record when it comes to liking cigars from the Tabacalera de Garcia factory in the DR.  I gave the H. Upmann Barbier a shot first.  This was a Toro, 6″ x 54, has Ecuador shade and Ecuador Sumatra wrappers, Indonesian Java binder with Nicaraguan, Dominican and Pennsylvania Broadleaf fillers. This was a very enjoyable cigar.  It was smooth, rich, and had plenty of flavor.  There was some sweet, bready flavors, and maybe the PA Broadleaf gave it a little oomph.  I finally found a Dominican Upmann I like.  Very nice.

I took a short break from this series to visit the Wooden Indian yesterday where they were hosting Erik Espinosa for the afternoon.  I smoked, and very much enjoyed, a 601 La Bomba Warhead VII.  I should buy more of these as I really enjoy the flavor. As always, the Wooden Indian staff was great, it was great seeing Erik, Mark, Jose, Bobby, and everyone else.  I went home and took a nap.

After dinner I lit up the Romeo y Julieta Reserva Real Twisted Toro.  The Twisted Tasting Kit included both the Toro and the Twisted Love Story, which is the 4¼” x 46 perfecto version. I’m shocked that they were able to get away with using the name “story” with this shape cigar, although it would come down to who has the bigger lawyers, I guess. Still seems weird to me. I’ll get to the little guy when I need a small cigar, but the 6″ x 54 Toro works better for me.  Regarding all of these dos capas, or barber pole style cigars, all four have burned perfectly, and often the dual wrappers can cause a meandering burn line, not the case.  They all burned perfectly.  The Romeo y Julieta Reserva Real Twisted Toro has Ecuadorian Habano and Ecuadorian Connecticut wrappers, Nicaraguan binder and Dominican and Nicaraguan fillers, with the Ecuadorian Habano wrapper seeming to be the only change from the Reserva Real blend.  I haven’t had a Reserva Real in forever, like I said, it’s not something I reach for (it kinda has two strikes against it for me, it’s DR Altadis, and it’s a shade wrapper). All that being typed, it was an enjoyable smoke, with the Habano knocking the grassi/nuttiness off of the shade a touch. It was good.  For my palate, the Black Label offerings in this sampler were better, but I like a nice “theme” week now and then, and this was a good one.  It was a good deal too, I was happy with the purchase.

That’s all for today, until the next time,

Araposa and Providencia Speakeasy Cigars and Some Random Thoughts

Friday I posted the press release from Black Label Trading Company about the exclusive cigar that they were doing for Fox Cigars in Arizona. What should appear at my door on Saturday but a surprise box from Fox with a bundle of these cigars! I’ll be honest, I was planning to order some from them as soon as they became available anyway! Of course, Fox Cigars is an advertising partner here, but I still buy cigars from them, they are on my preferred vender list, they do a great job. I usually let cigars rest, but these came in a sealed bag with a Boveda, and I checked one with my trusty Humidimeter and it was 62% at the foot, right where I like to see a cigar, so I figured what the heck, I’m itching to smoke one of these! This is a 5½” x 54 box pressed barber pole cigar, with San Andrés and Ecuador Corojo wrappers, Ecuador Habano binder and Nicaraguan fillers. For a “right off the truck” experience, this cigar burned perfectly, like a cigar that had been in my humidor for years. What a great cigar! The press release mentions “flavors of black cherry, anise and bitter cocoa”, I’ll give you the dark chocolate, and maybe a dark fruit, but I missed the anise, I’ll keep an eye out for that the next time.  If you’re a fan of Black Label Trading Co., keep an eye on Fox Cigars and snag some of these. James Brown is going to be at Son’s Cigars in my neighborhood on October 6th, I plan to get up there that night. By the way, “raposa” is Spanish for fox, Araposa must be a dialectal variation or something?

A few weeks ago I smoked through a sampler of Providencia cigars, and had an issue with the Speakeasy, so I ordered another one from Underground Cigars, which is their main ecommerce partner. I was ordering some of the Essential, which I took a liking to, and added one on. Knowing that the first experience I had was an anomaly, as I had never had a Providencia cigar that wasn’t perfect in every way in construction, I needed to give it a second shot. Stuff happens. Of course, this one was perfect. This cigar is a long corona, I didn’t measure it, nor is there any information listed on the website, but it’s 6″ x probably 44 ring? it’s a nice size cigar. Close to a lonsdale, really. Again, I don’t know what the makeup of the cigar is, but it has a dark, oily wrapper, I do know it’s made at the Flor de San Luis factory in Esteli. It’s a fairly full bodied cigar, with rech, espresso flavors.  I had a sense with the fist sample I smoked that it was a good tasting cigar, which is what made me spend the money to smoke it again, and I was right, it was well worth it. I dug it. I may fire up one of the Essentials later if I can rebound from the Flu and Shingles vaccines I had yesterday that have left me feeling like crap today.

I wanted to talk about something I read about yesterday that touched a nerve. Ministry of Cigars, which was a news/blog site based in Singapore was shut down. The site focused more on the International cigar scene, didn’t sell cigars, was a blog site like my own, or Halfwheel or Cigar-Coop, or a bunch of other sites. Apparently the owner actually had the Singapore authorities actually at his door, taking him in to whatever official offices deal with such things, and he could face fines for advertising cigars. He had to take down his site, of course. Naturally, in the US of A we say, “oh, that can’t happen to us, freedom of the press and all”, but watch it…we let things like this new oppressive tax go through, and this same sort of thing might be next. It may well be illegal for us to have ads on our sites, our content may be considered advertising, plain packaging, etc. Call your representatives, tell them you vote and you oppose this and it will put people out of business. At the very least go HERE and send an email.

That’s all for today, until the next time,

Welcome Fox Cigars Contest No. 3 Winner and Wrap-up

The last month has been a lot of fun, three great contests sponsored by Fox Cigars!  Brought back some memories of the good old days of CigarCraig contests.  It’s getting harder and harder to give stuff away these days! I’ll keep sharing great cigars with my readers as long as I am able, and I know my partners are always anxious to spread the love as well. Thanks to Rob at Fox for helping out with this series of contests! I know that Chase received his Perdomo prize, and Narciso’s Oliva gift went out in the mail yesterday. Today we’ll be announcing the winner of the last present in the three part Welcome to the CigarCraig Family contest! I smoked an original El Güegüense Robusto last night to celebrate, since I didn’t seem to have any Illusiones on hand, I guess I’ll have to go on Fox Cigars website and order some! The El Güegüense was fantastic! I believe it was from the original release, and it burned well, although it did need a correction here and there, but the flavor was wonderful.

I did make some Area 51 jokes in the original contest post, I don’t recommend attending that event. Also, I don’t think Dion has named any Illusione cigars Area 51 (yet), but he has used MJ12, which refers to a group of scientists who probably worked there. Anyway, through my random selection process, utilizing the random number generator on Random.org, and a spreadsheet randomize range tool, I’ve selected a winner from combined website and Instagram comments. That winner is Nate Martin! Please email me your address, along with proof that you’re of legal age so I can get all these goodies out to you. Thank you again to Fox Cigars! That’s all for today, until the next time,

Contest: Welcome Fox Cigars Episode Three!

OK, this is the third and final installment of the “Welcome Fox Cigars” series of Giveaways! The first two have been great, I think you’ll agree, but I think you’ll also agree that we’ve saved the best for last!  Honestly,  I probably could have stretched this out to four, but let’s not get carried away! First we have to determine a winner from last weeks giveaway.  Like last time, I made a list of the combined entries from he comments here and on Instagram, and randomized them, and had Random.org pick a number and that was the winner.  The winner of the Oliva prize is from the website comments this week!  Narciso Lopez, please send me your address, along with proof that you are of legal age, so that I can send you your winnings!

Let’s see what Giveaway numero tres, looks like! Illusione! Dion Giolito makes some great cigars, and has a cigar store in Reno.  Here we have an Illusione t-shirt in XL, perfect to wear to the big Area 51 thing next month!  And, since Are 51 is in the Nevada desert, you’ll need the Illusione 5 count travel humidor to keep your cigars in good shape. Speaking of cigars, there are some of those too!  There are two each of Illusione Cruzado Marelas Supremas and Cruzado Domenicos Extra.  There’s an Illusione Rex (the unbanded corona), and an Epernay. Since Illusione is  a boutique brand, there’s also a selection of boutique cigars! a selection from Aganorsa Leaf, Warped, Surrogates and Foundation add to the panache of this super-cool prize pack! I’m going to enter (not really, but I haven’t smoked some of these cigars! I’m going to have to order some from Fox).

By the way, I don’t recommend going anywhere near Area 51, I understand it’s not cigar friendly at all. So, leave a comment to enter! I’m going to post this on Instagram, and I’m going to include comments on that post as well, just to make my life more difficult, so you can get two chances.  As usual, you must be of legal smoking age in your jurisdiction to win (and even that’s getting to be a PITA these days!), one entry per person  (per site). I’ll select a winner next Wednesday, August 14, 2019. Once again, thanks to Rob at Fox Cigars!
