Azan White and Burgundy from Roberto Duran and a Drew Estate Event

While at the IPCPR show last month I managed to end up with samples of the Azan line of cigars from Roberto Duran.  The booth was busy the times I came across it, but a friend gave me some samples, and I think there was someone around the booth handing them out. These were highly recommended and I was looking forward to smoking them, but I really didn’t know much about them.  It turns out that Azan is an old Cuban trademark that has been out of production for so long nobody remembers it! Interestingly, the brand was created in Cuba by Chinese immigrants back in the 1920s.  So, after hearing from Gabriel Piñeres of Creativas, the PR firm that handles Azan, as well as Toraño Family cigars, I figured it would be prudent to smoke some of these up.

AzanWhite_CampanaI started with the White Premium Line Campana.  This is a traditional belicoso size at 5½ x 52 with a tapered head.  It was a very nice looking cigar, the Corojo wrapper was flawless and was smooth and symmetrical. It’s burn was perfect, just the way I like it with a straight, flat burn.  It was a very enjoyable cigar to smoke both in the aesthetics as well as the flavor.  The flavor was clean, smooth, with a nice spice and great, rich body.   I really enjoyed smoking this cigar and will be on the lookout for more.  I have a robusto remaining which may not last long.  This was a hidden gem and thanks to my friend Joe and whoever else handed me samples!

AzanBurgundy_RobustoI figured the logical thing to do the following evening was to smoke the Azan Burgundy line robusto.  This cigar is a little more rustic in appearance than the White line.  According to the website they use a lower grade of Corojo wrapper on this, and the appearance is a little lumpier. The flavor was nice. It shared a certain sweetness I came across in it’s classier sibling, and the burn and draw were just as good.  This is certainly a nice alternative to the White, which I can assume carries a higher price tag.  Laziness on my part leads to this assumption as I haven’t yet had the chance to shop these yet.  I can conclude that Roberto Duran is doing things right.  He’s reviving a historic brand with quality cigars that are smoking well.  I look forward to smoking more of both of these.

CI_HamburgSaturday brought yet another trip up to Hamburg, PA to the Cigars International store.  My friend Bacon Jams Bruce and I went up for the Drew Estate Event.  We smoked some fine cigars, including my favorites, the Joya de Nicaragua Cabinetta #13 Lancero and an Undercrown Corona Viva.  I used some gift cards I received for my birthday to pick up the Xikar MTX multi tool/cigar scissors.  Thanks guys, you know who you are.  This tool will requite some practice, but I’ve hear and seen really good things about it.  My concern is that it’s too small and I’m worried about losing it. Perhaps I’ll put it on a lanyard and wear it ChrisStone_DE_LOLaround my neck!  Anyway, the Drew Estate event was well attended, but it didn’t look like the silent auction items were getting a lot of bid action. There was another custom carved humidor but Jessi Flores, the director of Subculture Studios that was a work of art.  The auction was again supporting TECHO. This isn’t a criticism, but an observation, but I really think a store like CI is a place people go looking for bargains, not necessarily the well heeled clientele that you find at some upscale shops.  I hope they raised a lot of money for this worthwhile charity.  Also there were the Operation: Cigars for Warriors folks, and the local Drew Estate Rep, Chris Stone, donated 10″ of his hair to Locks Of Love. JD_Bruce Well done, once again, to the generous cigar community.  I admit, my reason for going in the first place was to see the Drew Estate crew, and say hello to Jonathan Drew, who hobbled in around 6:30.  We had a nice little visit on my way out the door.  My apologies to the line of guys waiting to meet him.  He’s a good friend and a heck of a nice guy.  There were also the usual Drew Estate ambassadors and fans present, always nice to see that cast of characters.

That’s it for now, until the next time,

Birthday Cigars, a Contest Winner and Random Sunday Nonsense

I’ve been a slug this week.  We’ve had a busy week here with our youngest going to the National Outdoor Leadership School for 3 weeks, my birthday, along with my wife planning my party on Saturday, as well as it being a holiday weekend.  Autumn bums me out a little too, so the specter of summer ending is tough for me.  I’ve been just grabbing smokes without concern for writing about them and just enjoying them.  I’m old. You kids get the hell off my lawn!  Anyway, I’ll get back on track this week.

CC_CigarSafariBlend2013Thursday was my birthday, and I wanted to smoke something special. I couldn’t really decide what I wanted to smoke, so I went with one of the cigars I blended at Cigar Safari last May.  This is the third one of these I’ve smoked, and it’s an enjoyable smoke for me.  I used a San Andreas maduro wrapper over a Cameroon binder, along with fillers from Brazil and Nicaragua.  Obviously a cigar of your own blending is special, and there’s only seven of these left on the planet, so they are quite rare.  I enjoyed the heck out of the cigar, although if I were to do it again I would’t have selected the 6″ x 54 size. The 5×44 size I made two years ago was nice, I shouldn’t have gone quite so much larger.  I still love them and they are a special cigar to me.  It was a great way to celebrate my 50th birthday.

LaGloria_SerieR_BlackSaturday we went up to Cigars International in Hamburg, PA to have some cigars with some friends for a few hours.  I tried the newish La Gloria Cubana Serie R Black for the first time. The La Gloria Serie R Esteli is a brick and mortar only,  while the Black is just for online and catalog sales.  Buying this in a brick and mortar location of a major catalog merchant blurs the lines a little bit, but at least it gave me the chance to try this without springing for a five pack and shipping. It was a fine cigar.  I think the Esteli version is a richer cigar, a little deeper in flavor than the black.  Granted, this was smoked off the sales floor and hasn’t had the advantage of aging, but the Esteli samples haven’t really either.  Of course, I’m a La Gloria Cubana fan, and pretty much enjoy everything from the line.  I picked up some more of the Rabitos de Cocina and Serie Ns while there.I also smoked a Don Pepin Garcia Original Lancero, a gift from Graham of Over a Cigar podcast and The Cigar Lounger magazine.  This is a fantastic smoke.  I love the Lancero shape, it’s a perfect format for a social situation.  It needs to be smoked slowly, and a good one can be a distraction from conversation.  We had a great time at the Hamburg CI, managed to be the last people out of there sometime after 11.  I had friends from high school, as well as friends from the cigar world there and everyone had a great time.  Thanks to everyone who made it out.

baconjamsWednesday I offered a contest featuring The Bacon Jams from my friend Bruce at www.TheBaconJams.com.  I’m going to send a taster with the three flavors to the winner, and a couple cigars could fall into the box too, it’s happened before.  This seemed appropriate since yesterday was International Bacon Day.  I don’t know about you, but every day is a good day for bacon, and this Bacon Jam makes it easy to enjoy it’s bacony goodness.  The odds are better than most of my contests, and I have to say I’m a little disappointed in the response. I consulted Random.org, and the random number generator gave me the number 2.  So I am the winner….no that’s not right….jjo is the winner!  Please  send me your address and I’ll get this out as soon as I meet up with Bruce for a cigar or two this week.

Until the next time,

CigarCraig

Drew Estate Charity Event at the Wooden Indian in Havertown, PA

Yesterday was The Wooden Indian‘s annual Drew Estate event with auctions benefiting TECHO, who helps build affordable housing in Esteli, Nicaragua.  Chris Stone and Pedro Gomez of Drew Estate were there as well as the local Xikar rep, Rich.  Both companies contributed many items for the raffle, which, according to Chris Stone, raised $5000.  This kind of money can build houses for three Pedro_WI 08102013families in Nicaragua!  For those who don’t know Pedro Gomez, he has been working at Drew Estate for seven years, and running the Cigar Safari for the last five years.  Pedro knows everyone in Esteli, keeps the tours running smoothly and serves as the translator and tour guide.  Pedro recently moved to the US to do events as the Drew Estate Factory Spokesman. It’s an opportunity that only a few folks from Esteli get, and he’s dedicated to bringing the same professionalism to the events in the US that he brings to the Cigar Safari.  Fortunately for Cigar Safari attendees, he will be back in Nicaragua for the three months a year that the run the tours!  I’m not sure if the Safari would be the same without Pedro’s expert guidance!

Auction_DE-WI 08102013In addition to the company reps, this event brought people from far and wide.  There were Drew Estate Ambassadors, several members of the Facebook C.A.T.S. (Cigar Aficionado Trades and Sales) group and others.  As I said before, they raised $5000, and the two big ticket items were a custom Humidor finished by Jessi Flores, the creative director at Subculture Studios at the Drew Estate Factory in Chris Stone_Humidor08102013Esteli,and a basket loaded with rare and unusual Liga Privada cigars.  The Humidor went home with our local Cigar Rights of America ambassador (and Emilio Cigars rep) Alan Price.  There was a group who conspired to win the basket, four gentlemen from the C.A.T.S. group who called themselves The A-Team, complete with t-shirts! They were smoking Liga Privada A’s at the event (which were eventually replaced by more A-Team 08102013when the won. They had a bundle of No. 9 Tubos (these were Steve Saka’s pocket cigars from what I know, so I guess they didn’t need them anymore!), a bundle of Velvet Rats and various other rare and unusual Ligas.  Quite a score, and I hope they didn’t have any fights over anything there was fewer than four of! Congrats to all the winners, and a job well done to Dave Mayer and his Crew at the Indian, the folks at Drew Estate and Xikar.

HE_UCWhile I was at the event I picked up a few more Joya de Nicaragua Cabinetta Lanceros and smoked on while there. This is a sentimental favorite as it will forever remind me of my first trip to Cigar Safari, as Jonathan passed around a bundle on the bus before they were released, and we watched them rolling them at the Joya de Nicaragua factory.  It’s also a darned fine smoke suitable for any time of day and should appeal to a wide range of tastes.  Later that evening I pulled out a Herrera Esteli Lonsdale which was equally as fabulous as the Cabinetta.  This burned perfectly and was sweet and smooth and delicious. This is another cigar that’s appropriate at any time.  Loaded with flavor!  As I write this I’m working on an Undercrown Corona Doble.  Certainly larger than I usually smoke, but great for a gorgeous Sunday afternoon on the deck typing away.  Whereas the JdN Cabinetta and the Herrera Esteli are loaded with complexity and subtlety, the Undercrown is dark, rich and bold.  All great cigars!

La-Gloria-Cubana-Gilded-Age-Toro-CigarsDon’t forget to go back to Friday, August 9th’s post and enter to win a box of La Gloria Cubana Gilded Age Toros courtesy of Famous Smoke Shop!  There’s only another 5 days to enter, and I know this is longer than most of my contests, but I wanted to give plenty of people a chance to enter.

That’s all I have for today, until the next time,

IPCPR 2013 – Part 3: Two Guys Smoke Shops with David Garofalo

This is the third and final post in the Garofalo Trilogy.  As I said before, Dave was very generous with his time and we recorded eleven or twelve minutes of video.  It’s chopped up because it wasn’t until we were finished that we realized it went on for that long.  In this final segment Dave talks about his Two Guys Smoke Shops in New Hampshire.

As you can see, David Garofalo has his hands in a lot of things.  I’m grateful for the time he spent with us.  His United Cigar Retailers booth was busy, he had one meeting after another with retailers about joining the group.  After stopping back a couple times on the third day of the show we decided to see him at 9 am on the last day. Thanks to Dave and his staff there for accommodating us!  Hopefully I’ll get up to New Hampshire one of these days to see the stores and maybe watch a Cigar Authority show.

That’s it for now, until the next time,

4th of July Weekend Cigars: Alec Bradley, Hoyo, Gurkha, La Gloria and Another Alec Bradley

AB_ AmericanClassicWe had a pretty low key 4th of July celebration. All our kids and grandkids were over and we grilled and stuff for the afternoon. Before everyone got here I started the day with an Alec Bradley American Classic Robusto. I pick up a few of these on occasion because they are a really solid, versatile cigar. They are inexpensive, smooth, tasty and well made. I enjoy them and they are a great cigar to give to an occasional smoker, which I did not have the opportunity to do, I smoked it myself.

HoyodeMonterrey_ChurchillAfter everyone left it was time to break into the special occasion humidor and pick out a celebratory cigar. I selected a Havana Hoyo de Monterrey Churchill which was given to me several years ago with the proviso that it might be plugged, and if it was, ditch it and smoke something else (he had also given me a back-up). Unfortunately,  I failed to bring a backup along, and the cigar was horribly plugged and I fought with it for my entire walk. The really annoying part was that the little bit of flavor I was able to coax out of the cigar was pretty darned tasty, and I wanted it, I wanted it bad!  I usually keep it to myself when a cigar is this flawed, but considering the manufacturer, I don’t feel too bad being critical when the situation calls for it.

HdM_Epi2I wasn’t going to be defeated, so I went back to the humidor and selected a much more recent production Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No 2. Ah, success. This is about the same size the Churchill would have been by the time I returned from my walk had it not been plugged. This Robusto (or is it a Hermoso No. 4? I forget) burned as well as a Cuban cigar can be expected to burn and had the flavor that the Churchill had teased me with. I’m firmly a believer that there are many cigars that are much better than Cubans but I enjoy the different flavor that only Cuban cigars have and have smoked at least on on the 4th of July for so many years its a tradition. It’s a combination of celebrating our wedding anniversary and the little bit of civil disobedience that this country was founded on that keeps me doing it.

Gurkha_CellarReserve_ChrurchillFriday we  were running some errands and found ourselves going through Maple Glen, PA, (near Ambler).  We spied a place called “Black Wolfman Tobacco” and felt compelled to visit. This is a little shop that has a couple cabinet humidors along one wall, and they roll your own and cigarettes behind the counter. The selection was sparse, but reasonably priced. I grabbed a couple Perdomo 10th Anniversary Maduro Robusto for about $5.25 each. When we got home it was hot, so I grabbed a Gurkha Cellar Reserve Churchill and got in the pool. I like a large cigar for pool smoking, it just seems easier for some reason. I’ve smoked a bunch of these and it’s a nice, smooth smoke.  I like these as the first cigar of the day because it’s on the mild side. I had an ulterior motive in picking this out besides it’s inherent pool-worthiness.

Gurkha_Cellar Reserve_MaduroMy Friday evening walk featured a new cigar from Gurkha, a Cellar Reserve with a maduro wrapper. I’m sure that Oliver Hyams, marketing director with Gurkha, told me what the wrapper  was when he gave me this last week at Cigarnival, but I’ve forgotten and I’ll update this when I receive the information. I want to say it’s either a San Andreas or Connecticut Broadleaf as that’s what it tasted like to me. Great smoke! This cigar is right up my alley. It’s got that coffee/espresso that I like along with a little sweetness.  Something sticks in my head about Brazilian Arpiraca, but I may be confusing that with the wrapper on the Ghost, which this tastes nothing like. (note: I confirmed with Oliver Hyams at Gurkha, it was Brazilian Arapiraca!) I am certain that this will be released at next weeks IPCPR show, so this is a little preview. I suggest giving it a try when it comes out, because it’s darned tasty! It even has a curly little pigtail cap.

Alec Bradley_Nica Puro RobustoThis is getting a little long for a holiday weekend, but I had a lot more time to smoke!  Saturday I had another La Gloria Cubana Rabitos de Cochino. I see more of these in my future, the price to quality ratio is off the charts. Later I decided to give the new Alec Bradley Nica Puro a try. Now this is my kind of cigar! My  initial thought is that it’s reminiscent of an Undercrown, it’s got that similar heavy body and lush flavor. I found that I had not eaten enough dinner as if it had been a longer cigar than a robusto it may have gotten the best of me. This is a cigar that’s on the stronger side, to be sure. I loved this smoke and appreciate Jonathan Lipson passing these to me last week, as I had been looking forward to trying them. There’s not a lot of Alec Bradley cigars that I don’t enjoy, but this one goes to the top of the list.

That’s enough for today, have some things to get done around the house and some sitting in the pool to do this afternoon. I have to pick out some cigars for today to wrap up the long weekend. Five more days of work and then it’s off to Vegas! Until the next time,
