News: Casa Cuevas to Release Flaco at 2022 TPE Show

I know, I know, this news came out last week. I wanted to get it posted, but other things came up. As I’m on my way to Vegas tomorrow, here’s some news from Casa Cuevas, who I’ll visit at the TPE, about a new release. They make some great cigars, and have been for years. The Patrimonio was one of my favorites last year. I met Luis at the TPE in 2020 and he was a super-nice dude. Maybe he’ll remember me!

CASA CUEVAS CIGARS TO RE-RELEASE THE LIMITED EDITION FLACO BRAND AT THE 2022 TPE IN LAST VEGAS

Casa Cuevas Cigars announces the return of the Casa Cuevas Limited Edition Flaco Maduro and Habano (both 7 X 43) at the 2022 Tobacco Plus Expo, taking place this January at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Originally released in December 2018, the brand was well received by the public and then tragedy struck as the Casa Cuevas Cigars’ distribution center in Miami was burglarized two months later. The entire Casa Cuevas inventory including all the individually numbered Flaco boxes were stolen. Because there was no record of which boxes had been sold and which had been stolen, Casa Cuevas decided not to pursue the project any further. However, after constant feedback and demand for the Flacos, the Cuevas family felt it was time to re-release the brand three years later. Thus it is that the Casa Cuevas Limited Edition Flaco 2021 will make its return at the 2022 TPE.

The Lancero vitola is a favorite of the Cuevas family and a notoriously difficult vitola to roll consistently. In 2018 The Cuevas family felt confident that their factory could produce a premium brand available in only a lancero size. Master Blender Luis Cuevas Sr. settled on two blends and handpicked his best rollers to carry out his vision. The name “Flaco” translates to skinny from Spanish and is named after Alec Cuevas, Casa Cuevas’s Director of Operations. The Casa Cuevas Limited Edition Flacos started to earn a cult following, especially after the burglary wiped out the majority of the inventory, which is a principal reason the Cuevas family decided to produce another limited run of these elegant cigars.

Luis Cuevas President of Casa Cuevas Cigars said, “The burglary was a low point for us, and so we decided to move forward with other projects but there was a constant stream of communication from retailers and consumers to bring back the Flaco brand. We are excited to showcase the Flacos at the TPE. Going forward the plan is to release a limited amount of the Casa Cuevas Limited Edition Flacos every three years.”

Both blends are available in one size, a 7X43 Lancero and come in an elegant ten count box. Only 750 individually numbered boxes were made for each blend. Both blends are made at the Cuevas Family-owned Las Lavas Cigar Factory in Santiago, Dominican Republic.

Casa Cuevas Limited Edition Flaco Maduro features a Maduro wrapper, Nicaraguan binder, and filler with tobaccos from Colombia, Dominican Republic, Nicaragua and USA Pennsylvania.

Casa Cuevas Limited Edition Flaco Habano features a Habano wrapper Nicaraguan binder, and filler with tobaccos from Colombia, Dominican Republic, Nicaragua and USA Pennsylvania.

Casa Cuevas Patrimonio Robusto Cigar and a Contest!

Two months ago I posted about the Casa Cuevas Patrimonio shipping to stores, and Gabriel Piñeres,  who does the PR for Cuevas, and has been a great friend for many years, was kind enough to send me a couple of them a few weeks ago. When I posted the news item I threatened to buy some, and I plan to make good on that threat, especially after smoking these (and I’m smoking one as I type). To recap, this was made as an homage to the senior Cuevas, Luis Sr., by his son and grandson, with a Honduran Corojo wrapper, Ecuadorian Habano binder, and filler made up of Peruvian, Nicaraguan, and Dominican tobaccos. This is an interesting blend for a historically Dominican company! I smoked the 5″ x 54 Robusto, when I buy some, I’ll try the Toro (of course). Both samples I smoked worked perfectly, I couldn’t have been happier. There’s a tanginess to the smoke which I suppose would be classified as citrus, over a fairly leathery flavor. It’s a really nice cigar. This would be a no brainer for me to be a new Father’s Day traditional cigar for me, but I was the very fortunate recipient the cigars that I’ve been smoking for the last 20 years (which, of course, are 20+ years old and in beautiful condition, I’m set into my 70s!). This is a brilliant cigar, very well done.

Contest!

It’s been a while again, and I feel like giving some things away! Once again, this will be a random CigarCraig’s Humidor selection!  I’ve pulled some cigars from the humidor, and I’ll add some more as I rummage through the humidors during the week! There are 13 cigars pictured, along with a very nice dual flame lighter and cutter from Villiger, assorted coasters, stickers and matches as I come across them, and a nice shirt from Habana Premium Cigar Shoppe that I would have happily added t my wardrobe, but 2XL is much too large for me I’m afraid! So as per usual, leave a comment on this post to enter, one post per person please! Must be of legal age to win, of course! I’ll pick a winner next Wednesday, November 3, 2021.

That’s all for today, until the next time,

News: Casa Cuevas Prensado Rebranded

CASA CUEVAS CIGARS REBRANDS THE CASA CUEVAS PRENSADO BRAND

Casa Cuevas Cigars announces that the Casa Cuevas Prensado line has added a secondary band to distinguish the Prensado from the Casa Cuevas core line of cigars. The Casa Cuevas Prensado line features a Habano and a Maduro version.

Launched in 2017, the Casa Cuevas Prensado is a follow up to the Casa Cuevas core line of cigars. The addition of the secondary band will further distinguish this from the original Casa Cuevas core line.

Luis Cuevas President of Casa Cuevas Cigars said, “Because the Prensado is a 6 X 48, we felt that it was too similar in gauge to our Toro, which is 6 X 50.  Thus, after much feedback on this issue from retailers and consumers, we knew it was time to accentuate the branding so as to fully distinguish the Prensado from the Toro when a consumer is simply looking at the layout of the cigars within a box.  The Prensados, or box-pressed cigars, are a personal favorite of my father, my son, and I.   We look forward to getting behind the Casa Cuevas Prensado and re-introducing the line in this new way.”

Although blended in the same manner as the Casa Cuevas Core line of Maduros and Habanos, the Prensado really accentuates the flavor of the wrapper and binder since less filler is used in order to press the cigar into its rectangular shape.  Additionally, Master Blender Luis Cuevas, Sr. believes in making sure that box-pressed cigars are pressed for enough time to maintain their shape. Which means these cigars take longer to roll out to market than their traditionally shaped counterparts.

Luis Cuevas, Sr. states, “Prensado cigars need adequate time being pressed.  This is non-negotiable in our factory.  Perfection takes time.”

The Casa Cuevas Prensado Habano is composed of an Ecuadorian Habano wrapper, Nicaraguan binder, and Dominican/Nicaraguan fillers.  The Casa Cuevas Prensado Maduro is composed of a Mexican San Andreas Maduro wrapper, Nicaraguan binder, and Dominican/Nicaraguan filler. Both blends are made in the Cuevas family-owned Las Lavas Cigar Factory located in Santiago, Dominican Republic.

Both blends are available in one size, a 6″x 48 box pressed.

MSRP:

Casa Cuevas Habano: $8.20

Casa Cuevas Maduro: $8.40

The newly branded Casa Cuevas Prensado’s started shipping at the beginning of September.

News:  Patrimonio by Casa Cuevas Cigars Now Shipping

Here’s some news from Casa Cuevas.  They make some great cigars and are really nice folks!

Casa Cuevas Cigars announces that the Patrimonio cigar brand is now shipping! The Patrimonio cigar brand translates to Patrimony in English. It is dedicated to Luis Cuevas Sr. and to the paternal lineage of the Cuevas tobacco history which began over a 100 years ago. The Cuevas family’s tobacco history began when Juan Cuevas, a Spanish expatriate, began growing tobacco in Cuba in the mid-19th century.

The Patrimonio is the brainchild of Luis Cuevas Jr. and son Alec Cuevas. While the Patrimonio was created in conjunction with Master Blender Luis Cuevas Sr. at the Cuevas family-owned Las Lavas Cigar Factory in Santiago, Dominican Republic, the name of the new line, its significance, and its packaging was not revealed to Luis Cuevas, Sr. until the blend itself was finalized. This was in order to surprise Cuevas, Sr. with a line that is an homage to him, his father, and his grandfather.

Luis Cuevas Jr., President of Casa Cuevas Cigars stated: “Patrimonio is a project that is extremely near and dear to my son Alec and myself. When my father left Cuba, he left tobacco behind. Years later, after rebuilding in the U.S.A., he was able to revive our family tobacco history by opening his cigar factory in the Dominican Republic. Because of my father’s perseverance, our family legacy continues to live on.”

Patrmionio is a full-flavored, full-bodied cigar. The blend features tobacco from various regions, with the purpose of creating an extremely complex blend with richly bold flavors. The Patrimionio is composed of a Honduran Corojo wrapper, Ecuadorian Habano binder, and filler made up of Peruvian, Nicaraguan, and Dominican tobaccos.

The Patrimonio blend is available in three vitolas and packaged in 20 count boxes.

5 X 54—Robusto Gordo $10.50

6 X 52—Toro $11.00

6 X 60—Gordo $11.50

Cuevas Reserva Natural and Maduro Cigars and Casa Cuevas La Mandarria

I smoked a pair of Cuevas Reserva cigars before heading to Las Vegas and really enjoyed them, then I had occasion to meet Luis Cuevas at the Tobacco Plus Expo and talked to him about the cigars. I didn’t really have a chance to write about the cigars before I left, but I had a pair of each left and wanted to give them some more attention after I got back. Yesterday was the day when I had the chance to smoke one more of each of the Natural and Maduro in the Robusto size. Both were 5″ x 52, but are also offered in toro and torpedo sizes. The first time around I smoked the Maduro first, followed by the Natural, this time I flip-plopped. The Natural is a Ecuador Connecticut wrapped cigar, with a “Havana” binder and fillers from the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, and the U.S.A. I’m unclear on what the binder actually is, is it Habano, and from where?  And the U.S.A. in the filler? PA or Connecticut Broadleaf? My palate says PA, because this cigar had some body and unique flavor that is unusual for a Connecticut wrapped cigar. That being said, what do I know? The wrapper gave it some creaminess, along with some toasty flavors, without a lot of sweetness. I found it to be enjoyable, and well made.

The Maduro has a San Andrés wrapper, a Piloto Cubano binder from the DR, and Dominican and Nicaraguan (Ometepe) fillers. The cigars are made in the Casa Cuevas‘ Las Lavas factory in the DR. These are the first Cuevas branded cigars I’ve smoked, but I’ve smoked many cigars that they’ve made over the years. They’ve made cigars for the Toraños and Sam Leccia, among others in the past. Obviously, the Cuevas Reserva Maduro was very different from the Natural. The Mexican wrapper gives this an earthy flavor, and, like the Natural, it’s not a sweet cigar. It has a very nice tobacco flavor, and, like the natural, was very well made. The fact that the folks at Casa Cuevas Cigars sent me robustos allowed me to smoke them both in the same day, which was good, but I will be on the look out for these in the toro size, which you well know I really like. Luis Cuevas was a super-nice dude, and I wish I had sat down with him and done a video interview. I’m sure I could have worked it out, I know somebody…that one’s on me.

Just as I was starting to wonder if I couldn’t taste sweetness in cigars any more after coming home from TPE with what has come to me known in some parts of the cigar industry as the “Kostavirus” (named after Kosta Fotiadis, the proprietor of SMōKe Cigar Lounge in nearby Manayunk, PA), I smoked the Casa Cuevas La Mandarria today. This was originally a limited edition cigar that commemorated the robbery of the Cuevas warehouse in Miami last year. This sort of thing seems to happen annually to one company or another, most recently effecting Jochi Blanco’s Indian Head Cigars Warehouse. In the case of the Cuevas break in, the thieves broke through a wall with sledgehammers, hence the name La Mandarria, Spanish for sledgehammer. This cigar is now a regular production cigar, and what a great thing that is, because it’s a wonderful cigar. The cigar has an Ecuadorian Habano wrapper, Dominican Olor binder, and fillers from Dominican and Nicaragua. It’s a 6″ x 52 toro with a curlicue pigtail cap and a shaggy foot. The first three quarters of an inch of binder only are fairly unremarkable, but when the Habano wrapper catches, the sweetness kicks in and the full flavor comes through. There’s a bit of nice spice, but it’s mainly a nice, sweet smoke, and fairly full bodied. I loved the flavors of this and the burn and draw were absolutely perfect. I was sorry to put this one down when it reached about three quarters of an inch in length and threatened to burn my lips. I thought I really liked the two Cuevas Reserva cigars, but I really, really loved this one!

Take a look on the left sidebar at the CigarPage graphic, it’s new, and if you click through and make a purchase and use the code “CigarCraig10” in the checkout, you’ll get 10% off your purchase! Full disclosure, it’s an affiliate link, so I’ll get a little something out of it, which I could use to pay for the the “maintenance” I just had to do last week!  CigarPage is a great outfit with some great deals! Unfortunately it doesn’t look like they carry Cuevas cigars though!
