Grace O’Malley, Big Papi HOF and Fratello Bianco Nero Cigars

Info about this cigar isn’t going to be officially released until next Saturday, but I’m going to get ahead of things here.  I hope Kevin isn’t pissed at me.  When I was in Tampa last November, I was fortunate enough to accompany Kevin (CigarProp, Trash Panda) to Single Barrel Cigar Company to drop off the cigars that would become Grace O’Malley Pirate Queen Cigars. The Robusto size cigars, which were made by JSK Cigars, are 5″ x 54, and may be a tweaked version of the JSK Red Knight.

Here’s a quote from Kevin on the barrel selection:

We partnered with the crew at Single Barrel Cigar Company, aligning our pirate theme with the perfect aging vessel: a rum barrel. But not just any rum barrel. We selected a Sazerac Rye barrel that had previously held Myers’s Rum before making its way to Big Storm Distillery, where it finished yet another rum. This multi-layered history of spirits infused our cigars with unparalleled complexity.

The cigars were placed in the barrel on November 7, 2024, and remained there for 94 days, emerging on February 9, 2025.

As I’ve said ad nauseum, I haven’t had a drink in 35 years, so I don’t have much of a palate for spirits, and when I gave it up, the highest quality rum I drank was Bacardi (no offence to Kevin, I know it’s a staple for him, but it’s not a high end sipping rum). After smoking the Single Barrel Blanton’s Gold Maduro and enjoying it, I had some expectations for a cigar aged in a rum barrel. I was expecting sweet, it was a tasty cigar, but more of the barrel char flavor to me than sweetness.  I did make a mistake though, I wish I had mooched a cigar off of Kevin before being put in the barrel, although at the time I had no expectation that I would get to sample the finished product. I smoked a couple of these, and they were consistent, and I enjoyed them for what they are, a quality cigar, with a boozy aroma from the start.  Like I said, I’m not the guy for anything spirits related. However, I was able to figure out the proper way to use the cannon carriage cigar rest!

I smoked a couple more cigars I got at the TPE show a few weeks back this week, starting with the Fratello Bianco Nero, which was released last year. Omar gave me this cigar knowing how much I enjoy the Bianco, and this Bianco Nero (Italian for White Black for some reason), is a tweaked version.  It’s a 6″ x 58 box pressed perfecto, with a Maduro San Andrés wrapper, Indonesian binder and Nicaraguan fillers.  They only made 500 ten count boxes of these, and I wouldn’t mind having one of those in my humidor. This was a spectacular cigar, possibly richer in flavor than the regular Bianco (big fan of the Boxer), with loads of espresso flavors.  I’ve had some really good cigars so far this year, and this is near the top of the list so far.  Delicious.

Another cigar that came home from the TPE show with me was the Big Papi HOF from Artista Cigars.  This was a 6″ x 54 toro, they also have a limited edition figurado that’s reminiscent of a baseball bat, and they only made 541 boxes, which is the number of home runs he hit during his major league career. Artista is a funny brand for me personally. I have a good relationship with Kevin Newman there, but there are only one or two cigars in their portfolio that really work for my palate. There are a couple other brands like that, and I keep trying, because I like the folks and want to support the brand.  It’s kind of weird, I guess.  Anyway, I smoked the Big Papi HOF yesterday and enjoyed it. It has a San Andrés wrapper, although not a dar maduro color, with Indonesian binder, and a proprietary filler blend, which one would assume is largely Dominican given David Ortiz’ roots.  I got a woody profile with some subtle spice, not my favorite profile, and not what I expect from a San Andrés wrapper, but objectively quite a good cigar. I need to revisit the Harvest and  Midnight and try the Falu in their Artista Series.  Buffalo Ten is a really great bargain in any wrapper.

That’s all for today, I’m working on another adventure for next week, so stay tuned!  Until the next time,

News: El Artista Announces David Ortiz’ “The Slugger” Cigar Brand

Here’s some Thursday news from the folks at El Artista:

EL ARTISTA ANNOUNCES THE LAUNCH OF A NEW CIGAR BRAND

EL Artista Cigars announces a new line extension for the David Ortiz line of cigars. “David’s brand recognition is growing across many of his projects,” states Radhames ‘Ram’ Rodriguez, President of El Artista Cigars, “and over the last 3 years we have seen good growth in the Big Papi cigar line and we want cigar fans to have something new”.

Titled “The Slugger” after Ortiz’s signature Home Run style, the new brand is stronger and larger than its predecessor. The new blend features a stippled deep brown San Andres maduro wrapper, flavorful Dominican Negrito binder, and fillers from Dominican Republic, Nicaragua and US. In contrast to the first Ortiz Project, Big Papi, which was a medium blend, The Slugger includes several ligero tobaccos for a noticeably stronger smoke.

Developed by El Artista Cigars in conjunction with Ortiz, the blend was created as a response to Big Papi fan and retailer requests, “We have hosted dozens of events with Big Papi since 2016 and gathered a lot of feedback from fans about what the next blend should be like.” Says Kevin Newman Director of Sales & Marketing for El Artista Cigars, “Our Big Papi fans asked us to increase the power for the next blend; we not only increased the strength but made a bigger cigar packed with even more flavor”. At a recent press conference David Ortiz quipped: “I wanted a cigar size that better fits in my big hands, something that is big like me”.

The Slugger comes in one size: Gordo XL, 60×7”. Fans of the original Big Papi blend will recognize the handsome red and white Big Papi band on The Slugger, which is adorned with a contrasting navy-blue foot ribbon. Twenty cigars come in a beautiful blue and white piano-finished box. Retail priced at $12.50 per cigar.

World-wide launch of “The Slugger” is set for the 87th Annual IPCPR Trade Show in Las Vegas and El Artista expects to ship orders starting the second week of July, 2019.

Big Papi Humidor Contest Winner Announcement!

I got a bit busy over the last couple of days, and didn’t get around to selecting a winner in the Big Papi Humidor contest sponsored by El Artista Cigars. So I’m going to just go ahead and do it tonight! It’s appropriate, since the Red Sox are the World Series Champions, although it still is a really special humidor any way you look at it!  So I once again consulted  the random number generator at Random.org and it gave me the number 14.  I went back to the contest post and counted to the 14th comment and it was Matt Hopper.  Let me go back and double check…this is an important thing, not to be taken lightly. Yup, I checked and Matt Hopper is the winner!  Matt needs to e-mail me his contact information so I can pass it on to El Artista cigars so they can ship this beautiful humidor to him so he can celebrate the Red Sox World Series victory by (hopefully) filing it up with all his Big Papi cigars!

That’s three great contests in a row, sorry to say there isn’t a fourth right now, but stay tuned, you never know what may happen!  I have been smoking a few good cigars this week so watch for the regular Sunday recap coming up…er….Sunday! Until then,

CigarCraig

Contest: Big Papi Humidor from El Artista Cigars for the World Series!

Yes, it’s another contest! You’d think it was December! I hope everyone isn’t disappointed when the holidays roll around and I’m working in retail for the first time in 3o years and can’t do giveaways like I used to! Of course, I’ll try to do something, but temper your expectations! Let’s get a winner for the last contest out of the way, the lucky winner of the Joya goodies courtesy of Joya and the Wooden Indian is Jared Berel! E-mail me your address so I can send you your loaded travel humidor, hat and cutter! Don’t forget to check out the Wooden Indian’s online store!

In honor of the Boston Redsox being in the World Series, the great folks at El Artista has offered up one of their beautiful Big Papi humidors for a contest! I told them I had just done two contests in a row and my readers were sick and tired of having the opportunity to win great cigar related goodies, but they were insistent, and due to the time sensitive nature of the World Series and all going on as we speak, it was pretty much now or never. I’ve seen this humidor (the winner will receive it directly from El Artista), it’s a beauty, very well made, good fit and finish.

I’ll select a winner next Wednesday. I just looked at the schedule and I suppose the series will be decided by then. I rather expected them to stretch it out for a week but they don’t mess around, a sweep could have this wrapped up by the weekend! (That will make the Boston fans happy and piss off the LA fans, I guess…). So go ahead and leave a comment for an entry like usual. This one is open to everyone. Many thanks to El Artista for the great humidor for this contest!

Until the next time,

A Partagas, an Alec Bradley and a Big Papi Cigar Contest Winner!

It was a rough week for me, as the last week of August always is. Not to complain or anything, but growing up having an end of summer birthday sucks almost as much as a Christmas birthday, at least for me. It signals the end of summer, and as the years progress time passes faster and faster, so summer went by in the blink of an eye. I guess if you don’t like summer, it’s not a big deal, but I love summer. On top of all that, I was plagued by migraines for some reason. So it wasn’t a great week, no reason to dwell any further on that, it’s time to move on. I managed to smoke a couple great cigars this week, and I need to pick a couple Partagas_SeriePNo2winners of the Big Papi by David Ortiz cigar prizes.  So, for my birthday I was conflicted, should I smoke a known favorite cigar or smoke a “special” cigar and risk disappointment? I took the risk and went with a Partagas Serie P No. 2 Havana that probably came home with me from a wedding we attended in London in 2006 (this very weekend, actually, (Happy Anniversary Karyn and Mitchell!). The Hunters and Frankau rep was  handing these out, and the grooms father stuffed a few in my jacket pocket. So this Havana cigar had been in my humidor for 11 years, should have been plenty of time to recover from its journeys! I was quite surprised by the floral qualities this cigar had, it was really delicious and entertaining to smoke as it was never boring with the interesting flavors that it presented. It burned perfectly too, with a great draw, which is a plus. It turned out to be a great choice and a very good smoke, quite different from my regular fare as well as being different from what I remembered and expected.

AlecBradley_BlackMarketEsteli_RobustoYesterday I was migraine free for the first time all week, so I dug into the IPCPR samples and found the new Alec Bradley Black Market Esteli, their newest edition to the Black Market line. This cigar comes in  Churchill, Gordo, Robusto, Toro, Torpedo sizes, of which I smoked the 5″ x 52 Robusto. It has a Nicaraguan wrapper, a double binder of Nicaraguan and Honduran and Nicaraguan fillers. I need to further explore this line, but this just might replace the Nica Puro as my favorite Alec AlecBradley_BlackMarketEsteliBradley cigar. It was very rich and satisfying, the burn and ash were simply beautiful, and it had unique and interesting flavors that appealed to me. There was a sweet spice that I rarely taste in a cigar and it makes me smile when I do. I smoked a few other cigars this week, a little CLE corojo from 2014 that wasn’t appealing, and a Mombacho Liga Maestro that was very leathery, too much so for my taste, I’m afraid. These are both lines that I feel like I should explore further, on the CLE side, even though I’ve known Christian for 20 years, the cigars I’ve smoked from CLE haven’t tripped my trigger, the Asylum line I like, but I guess I just haven’t smoked enough of the CLEs. I’m late to the party with Mombacho and need to smoke more of their cigars. As far as the Alec Bradley Black Market Esteli, that’s a winner for me! See below for some pictures from IPCPR of their latest offerings.

Alec Bradley has added some nice accessories this year too, as well as some small format cigars. I’m looking forward to checking out the new Prensado Lost Art as well.

Contest!

Big PapiOK, it’s time to wrap up the series of contests featuring cigars from El Artista Cigars, we had a huge Exactus Super Colosus, the Pulita 60 Aniversario and finally, the Big Papi by David Ortiz, which I’ am about to announce the winners! Thanks to Carolyn and Keith for making all this possible! We will have two winners, one gets a five-pack of Big Papi cigars and a lighter, and the grand prize is a box of 20 Big Papi cigars! The runner-up is Matt Hopper! The grand prize winner is (drumroll please)… Randall Simon! I’ll need both of you to send me your addresses so we can get these out to you!  Thanks to all who followed and congrats to the winners! Stay tuned for more contests coming up!

That’s all for today, until the next time,
