General Cigar’s New Site, a My Uzi Weighs a Ton and a 1502 Emerald

PrintThe news came down today that General Cigar Co. launched their new website at www.CigarWorld.com. I probably signed up for membership on the site in 1997, and somehow or other I won a couple boxes of Macanudos, a box of 25 Price of Wales and a box of 10 Prince Philip.  For a newbie such as I was, these boxes were quite a treat, and I have fond memories of taking my kids trick-or treating on Halloween for a couple hours enjoying one of those giant cigars.  I never quite got into web forums, but not long ago started making random appearances on the CigarWorld forums.  I know I have a handful of loyal readers that are regulars there.  From just a little bit of poking around, I see that the “Products” section is a big improvement over the old site. I used to get frustrated that I couldn’t find a size chart, or when I did it was a .PDF file.  Now you can easily find the sizes in a given marque, as well as some blend information.  I’m happy to see that one of the biggest cigar companies out there has updated their site to accurately reflect their product offerings.  Well Done!

MyUziWeighsATon_DigitalSon6A few weeks ago I received a pair of the My Uzi Weighs a Ton Digital Son 6 coronas from Will at Cigar-Coop.com. This size is exclusive to Outland Cigars in North Carolina.  I recently gave away some MUWAT Baitfish, which were originally an exclusive for another shop, but have now been released to regular production.  I still haven’t smoked a Baitfish, and I have to admit that the 60 ring original MUWATs were not really what I expected.  I thought they were a little bland, quit honestly.  Not the case with the Digital Son 6 (and I would guess the Baitfish), as I found this to be a super tasty smoke.  It had some spice, it had some sweetness, and it was really a brilliant smoke.  As per normal, I smoked it while walking the dog on a brisk Monday evening before a Flyers game.  Many Thanks to Will for passing this on to me, I will smoke the second one soon as I won’t be able to keep myself from it.  Jonathan Drew and the Folks at Joya de Nicaragua hit a home run with this size.

1502_Emerald_ToroTuesday evening I smoked a 1502 Emerald Toro. I was waiting to smoke this until warmer weather, my though process being that it was a milder cigar,  not appropriate for winter smoking.  I heard through the grapevine that it was loaded with flavor, so I couldn’t wait any longer.  This is a nice box pressed toro, 6 x 50, and like the Ruby and the Black Gold, it features the wrapper folded over the foot of the cigar.  This gives a burst of the wrapper flavor off the light, which is really quite unique and interesting.  The cigar is solidly medium and full of flavor.  To say that this is my least favorite of the line isn’t really fair to the cigar, it’s a stellar cigar.  It I were to rank the three lines, the Emerald would be Excellent, the Ruby Amazing and the Black Gold Un-freaking-believable.  The 1502 line is exceptional, and thanks to Gary Griffith for sending me some to try.  I look forward to smoking more of these and meeting Enrique Sánchez, I don’t know how I didn’t meet him at the Delaware Cigar Festival.

My hosting provider change has occurred, and I hope everything looks and acts the same as it did before!  I’m still trying to figure the e-mail out, so if you need to reach me, send me a direct tweet (@cigarcraig), or leave me a comment.  I should have it all fixed up soon.  The process was daunting and stressful, but the support at Bluehost.com was very good and walked me through everything.  I’m pleased with their service so far, please let me know if you see any problems!

That’s it for today. Until the next time,

CigarCraig

A 1502 Ruby, a Pinolero from AJ Fernandez and a Couple of Ortega Cigars

I’ve been working tirelessly on this years 12 Spectacular Days of Cigar Giveaways this weekend, getting the daily posts drafted, taking pictures, shaking down sponsors, you know the drill.  If you weren’t totally impressed last year, you should be this time around.  I think it will be the biggest CigarCraig.com contest to date.  Stay tuned, the madness all starts bright and early on December 12, 2012.  Subscribe to my e-mail list, follow me on Twitter and Facebook to stay up to date on the goings on.  You don’t want to hear any more about how to get free stuff, so on to some cigars I’ve smoked this week.

First up is a 1502 Ruby from Global Premium Cigars.  This is a Nicaraguan company that’s being distributed by Gary Griffith of Emilio Cigars.  Gary sent me some to try recently.  Gary has been going crazy in the distribution area, he just picked up the Ezra Zion lines, which is good because they are tasty smokes and now I know a local place to pick some up!  I loved the 1502 Black Gold, it is a maduro that’s right up my alley.  This Ruby has what I believe to be an Ecuador Habano wrapper and is also a fantastic smoke.  It’s rich and tasty and very satisfying.  So far the 1502 cigars I’ve smoked have been winners in my book.  The Owner of this company, Enrique Sanchez seems to be out and about visiting stores and doing it right. I hope I have a chance to catch up with him one of these days.

When I was at the Delaware Cigar Festival in September I was speaking with Kris Katchaturian and AJ Fernandez and Kris provided me with a couple of their new cigar, the Pinolero.  I’ve been hearing and reading about this cigar, and the word on the street seemed to be that this was a really strong cigar.  I don’t mind strong cigars, but I don’t really need to be knocked on my butt. I like to be able to stand up without falling over when I’m finished a cigar.  I didn’t find this cigar as curiously strong as I had been led to believe  but it was an awesome smoke.  Well balanced and perfectly made, I was very happy with this cigar.  If you come across these and like stronger cigars, give it a try.

Friday night calls for a tried and true favorite to celebrate the beginning of the weekend. I have trouble keeping my hands off the Ortega Serie D Maduros in my humidors, so that’s what I selected.  I consider Eddie Ortega a friend of mine, and I’ve always enjoyed cigars in which he’s been involved.  When his Serie D was released with a San Andreas Maduro wrapper I knew it was going to be a perfect fit for my palate.  I smoked the No.7, which is 5″ x 46, which is one of my favorite sizes.  So far I haven’t really decided on a favorite size, they’ve all been spectacular.  Rich and dark, like the high percentage cocoa chocolate bars that are out there.  Have you ever had a 70% cocoa bar with jalapeños?  It’s not as spicy as all that but it’s awfully good.  One of my favorite cigars this year for sure, I could smoke these all the time and be a happy camper.

Of course, I had to smoke an Ortega Serie D Natural on Saturday.  I’d actually forgotten that I have smoked the natural before, it turns out it was in September and I noted that it showed signs of youth.  I smoked the No 10 last night and it was exceptional. It’s a belicoso shaped cigar, 6″ x 52 with a Habano Rosado wrapper that is quite attractive.  This is also an awesome cigar.  For my personal tastes, if this is awesome, then the maduro is super awesome, but that’s just me.  I really enjoyed the flavor and perfect burn and draw, and I smoked it to a finger burning nub.  Another “D”elicious cigar from Eddie Ortega, a way-cool guy who makes awesome smokes.  I may have to dig around and see if I have any more hidden in the humidors.

That’s about it for now, I have to plan a “12 Days” recon mission today to pick up some more fabulous prizes. Enjoy your Sunday!

Until the next time,

Cigar Craig

A 1502 Black Gold, an East India Trading Co. Red Witch and a Visit to Goose’s Lounge

It’s a special treat when I get to smoke two spectacular cigars in a row. I thought Saturday’s La Aurora Cameroon was as good as it got, and it was a fantastic smoke. Sunday afternoon was stunningly gorgeous so I grabbed a larger cigar, which turned out to be a 1502 Black Gold Torpedo that Gary Griffith had recently sent my way. Somehow I managed to miss this booth at the Delaware Cigar Festival, which is a great disappointment to me. The 1502 line is named for the year that Nicaragua was founded officially, and the cigars are all Nicaraguan puros. The cigar is visually beautiful, the maduro wrapper glistens with oils. The wrapper is cut a little long and folded over the end of the cigar, giving a nice burst of wrapper on the light-up. I spent the afternoon sitting in the sun thoroughly enjoying this cigar.’s deep dark, rich flavors. As I was smoking it I kept thinking that I am very happy that Gary sent me two of these torpedos and I really am looking forward to trying the other lines in the 1502 portfolio. Another darned yummy cigar!

Monday evening I ran across the Red Witch from the East India Trading Company arm of Gurkha. I find myself with a growing collection of Gurkha cigars where my experience with them is limited to a few lines, the Seduction being a personal favorite. I still haven’t tried the Wicked Indie, perhaps I’ll grab a couple the next time I see them. This toro sized cigar was very handsome, the Habano wrapper was quite nice. For a cigar that should set you back right around $5, this was an enjoyable smoke. the first few inches give you the impression that it’s going to be a butt-kicker, but it mellows out into a nice, smooth smoke. Gurkha has so many lines it’s dizzying, which is one of the reasons I’ve tended to steer clear, just because I can’t wrap feeble head around all the variety (much the way I feel about Rocky Patel’s cigars). I am going to make a conscious effort to pick up more of their cigars as they have proven to be well made, beautifully presented and generally tasty. Any suggestions?

Tuesday I got wind of an event going on at a local shop that I’ve been meaning to visit. Goose’s Tobacco Outlet is only about 15 miles from home, and I found out through the grapevine that Willy Herrera and Chris Stone from Drew Estate were doing an event there. I like to catch the Drew Estate events when I can. It gives me the opportunity to catch up with the local rep and usually score a good deal on some smokes I like. This time I was able to score another Joya de NicaraguaCabinetta lancero! I picked up a few of the Antaño Dark Corojo El Martillos and couldn’t get one lit fast enough. Delicious cigar! I ran into a couple of guys I had met at another recent event who are members, as well as Rob and Mike (?) the two DE ambassadors, one from New Jersey and one from Ohio. These guys travel considerable distances to help spread the word about cigars they love, it’s a pretty cool thing. Anyway, I got to hang out with Willy Herrera a little bit, but I got there too late, he had already stopped rolling his new Hererra Estelli cigars. I look forward to trying one when they come out in January.  The store is huge, I actually drove past it Herrera Esteli Box from the IPCPR Showonce because I was looking for a smaller place.  They have a neat walk in humidor that’s “U” shaped, and I look forward to going back to explore it further  as I said, I was late and wanted to get a cigar lit, but it looks to be well stocked.  The lounge is a Montecristo Lounge and is probably the same size as the retail area, which is enormous. I spoke with John Sr., the owner, and he gave me the grand tour, and his son, John Jr. provided excellent service in the humidor.  If you find yourself in the shadow of the Limerick Nuclear plant’s cooling towers in PA, stop in and pay Goose’s a visit.  It’s a really nice place to sit and relax with a smoke.

That’s all I have for this episode.  I’m off to find a good cigar to smoke while I walk the dog, or she walks me, as the case may be.  So, Until the next time,

CigarCraig
