News: Drew Estate Releases Isla del Sol Maduro and Isla del Sol Sun Grown Gordito

For the fans of the coffee infused cigars, here’s some news from Drew Estate. I don’t mind a Java or a Tabak Especiale, but I can’t say as I’ve ever smoked a Isla del Sol, but I’m certainly not opposed to trying them, and they are easy on the wallet. I look forward to seeing these hit the market.

Drew Estate announces its long awaited national release of Isla del Sol Maduro, the maduro wrapped blend of Isla del Sol, and the Gordito size of Isla del Sol Sun Grown, our original line of Isla del Sol, which will both be displayed in Drew Estate’s Booth at the IPCPR Convention and Tradeshow held, July 14-17, 2018 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Isla del Sol Maduro by Drew Estate is a premium handmade cigar blended with a rare triple-Nicaraguan-leaf mix, infused with coffee, and wrapped in luscious maduro leaf that’s garnished with a sweetened cap. The infusion process, great burn and draw, cocoa notes and mellow room aroma create an island of joy during the smoke.

News: Alec Bradley Announces “Mystery Cigar” For IPCPR 2018

I don’t get a lot of news from Alec Bradley, and I’ve known Jon Lipson there for quite a while, but I thought this was kind of interesting in that it’s really news that’s not saying a lot! It’s a teaser, and is up front about that. Obviously this news is targeted at retailers attending the IPCPR show, as with all of these news items, if something interests you, tell your local retailer to go to the show and look into it. Feel free to tell them you heard about it here, but nobody will care about that…😁

Alec Bradley Will Have an IPCPR Release, but It’s a Surprise

Hot off the heels of Alan Rubin’s sons, Alec & Bradley announcing, “Blind Faith”, their debut release, as second-generation cigar makers, Alec Bradley Cigar Co. is announcing its own “mystery” release at the International Premium Cigar & Pipe Retailers (IPCPR) Trade Show in Las Vegas, NV beginning July 13.

New School Innovation/ Old School Excitement:

Alec Bradley Cigar Co. prides itself on inspiration and innovation. Bucking the trends of the Premium Cigar Industry, the company has decided to announce a release, but keep it a mystery, providing very little detail prior to exhibiting it at the show.

“We want our tobacconist partners and our fans around the world to get just as excited as we are about this very special Alec Bradley release,” founder, Alan Rubin said. “That’s why we’re teasing it. There is something to be said about the old days in this business and the meaning of IPCPR. Retailers were eager to get to the show and see new products, so they could go back to their customers and say ‘Hey, check this out’. I want to bring that magi

c back to the show.”

Alec Bradley Cigar Co. invites all attendees of IPCPR to visit their booth- #2130 to get the first glimpse of their new release. At this time, they are confirming that the cigars are being made at the

famed Raices Cubanas Factory in Danli, Honduras. Amongst the many award-winning cigars in the Alec Bradley portfolio, the 96-Rated ‘2011 Cigar of the Year,’ Alec Bradley Prensado was and continues to be produced at Raices Cubanas.

Mi Querida Firecracker, Island Club, El Borracho, and Chopo™ Cigar Cutter

It’s been a busy news week, and I think it will continue to be busy leading up to the IPCPR show. I assume there will be a lull in the news, at which time many of my colleagues who will be at the show will be pushing loads of content out from the show, so I’ll see what I can do to break up the monotony for you, maybe smoke some old timey cigars or something. I’m sure there will be a lot of great stuff coming from the show, but one recent edition of the Prime-Time podcast with Cigar Coop and Aaron Loomis featured Dion Giolito (Episode 58). Dion doesn’t do a lot of interviews and it’s a damn shame, because he’s articulate, funny, and is a triple threat of perspective as a retailer, manufacturer and consumer. In addition to the excellent interview about the Illusione line, including the re-issue of the One-Off brand, he brought unique points of view to the show’s deliberations segment at the end. It’s recommended listening (or watching, I guess. It’s available in audio and video, I only listen to stuff).

MiQuerida_FirecrackerOK, lets rip through some cigar highlights of the week.  This week the Mi Querida Firecracker went on sale. The Firecracker is a 2 Guys Smokeshop exclusive, last year’s was the Fratello Firecracker (I smoked one recently on the Spanish Steps in Rome for the irony of it, and it was one of the best cigars I’ve smoked all year because of the setting and it’s a fantastic blend. Before that it was the Cromagnon, also excellent. This year was the year of the Mi Querida Firecracker. Another entertaining podcast is last week’s Cigar Authority show with Steve Saka, loads of laughs, but also great information about the cigar, and how he put some extra filler in the front of the cigar to make a 3½”x 50 cigar burn a little longer. I noticed that the draw seemed a little more snug in the beginning, and I managed to get nearly an hour out of this little beauty, which is slightly stronger than it’s similarly sized Gordito. It’s very rich and has the espresso flavors I love in the Mi Qurida line, which is easily one of my favorite cigars of the last couple of years. There were 500 boxes of these produced, and the majority sold out within the first few days.  I wouldn’t be surprised if these make another appearance, like the Cromagnon Firecracker is rumored to be.

Island Club RobustoEarlier this week I reported on Island Lifestyle Importers entering into a distribution agreement with Ventura Cigars, and I had some pre-release samples of one or their upcoming projects, the Island Club, so I decided it was the right time to smoke one. Island Club is an Ecuador Connecticut wrapped, Nicaraguan cigar that’s priced in the under $5 price range, which is nice, but I find slightly confusing coming from a luxury brand. They will offer it in five sizes, Robusto, Corona Gorda, Toro, Torpedo and Churchill, in bundles of 20, and if it’s a mixed fill cigar, it certainly doesn’t smoke like one. Honestly, it smoked like a much more expensive cigar, I would certainly select it over many more expensive cigars based on performance and flavor, I was that impressed with it. This is a home run for Island Lifestyle, I think, and combined with the distribution muscle of Ventura, this should give the whole brand a lot of visibility, because the Aged Reserve series cigars are all really good (and no matter what trickery I’ve employed, I can never get them to reveal what factory makes them!)

I’ve been using the Screwpop® “Chopo™” a lot recently to give it a good try, and find that it works remarkably well. It makes a nice, clean cut. It takes some work as it’s not spring-loaded, so one has to manually open it the desired amount then quickly snip the cap off the cigar, but it’s a serviceable back-up, for sure. As I’m sitting here thinking about it, unless I were sitting on an assembly line cutting cigar after cigar for hours on end, it’s not like I risk getting a repetitive stress injury from manually opening a cigar cutter once or twice a day, but one can’t argue how nice it is to flip a switch and have your Xikar, Colibri, Tommy Bahama, or similar cutter of choice snap open and be ready to snip your cigar. Anyway, the Chopo™ is a vast improvement over their last iteration of a scissors type cigar cutter, and is a worthy addition to the key ring.  I used it to cut an El Borracho Toro last night that I came across buried in the humidor. This was from last year’s IPCPR show, and I’m embarrassed that this bag of cigars from Dapper Cigar Co. got overlooked. Dapper Cigar Co. ElBorracho_Torogoes into Saka-esque detail about the blends on their website, the El Borracho is made up of Wrapper: Mexico / San Andrés Natural / San Andrés de los Perros S.A. de C.V.; Binder: Nicaragua / Jalapa / Cofradía / Habano Rosado / Oliva Tobacco Co.; Fillers:, Nicaragua / Esteli / La Joya / Oliva Tobacco Co., Nicaragua / Jalapa / Cofradía / Oliva Tobacco Co., Nicaragua / Condega / gk Relleno / Oliva Tobacco Co.. That’s a lot of detail, and probably more than we need to know. One interesting thing: I think the wrapper comes from the same farm in Mexico that the binder on Saka’s Sobreamesa is from. We’ll see if anyone reading can confirm that, or I’ll go back and review the video from the 2015 IPCPR show where Steve talks about that.  Anyway, this was a really tasty cigar!  I didn’t find it to be particularly strong, but it was full flavored and had some cocoa but more cedary than cocoa. Very interesting cigar that held my attention.  I have a couple more cigars from this company that I’ll try to get to this week. I’ll have to look into this company further.

Epic_CubraSolomonOne honorable mention this week is another pre-release cigar from Epic Cigars. This was a big Solomon with a Brazilian Cubra wrapper that is yet to be named. I’m very much looking forward to seeing these come to market as it was a really tasty cigar, although the wrapper on the sample I smoked was very delicate and the middle portion flaked off a bit. It was still a great cigar, worthy of the Epic name. That’s enough for today, Until the next time,

News: Bipartisan Letter Sent to the FDA by 17 US Senators

This is really important stuff regarding our rights to enjoy a fine cigar, but more important is people’s right to earn a living making and selling legal products.  But, you know what’s some bullshit (pardon my French)? Regarding this new comment period, the FDA is obligated to take the comments, and it’s encouraged for everyone to leave reasoned and educated comments, but, and here’s the stupid part, the FDA has no obligation to do anything about those comments! That’s some bullshit there!  Anyway, this is a big deal, it’s important to contact your legislators and tell them you’d like to see them sign onto the legislation.
17 U.S. Senators, Led by Bill Nelson and Marco Rubio,Urge FDA to Exempt Premium Cigars from Regulation. Bipartisan Letter Cites New Research Showing That Children Do Not Smoke Premium Cigars. FDA Is Accepting Public Comments Through July 25. Have You Commented Yet?
Yesterday, Florida’s United States Senators Bill Nelson and Marco Rubio sent the attached letter to FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb urging the FDA to exempt premium cigars from regulation. The letter, signed by a bipartisan coalition of 17 United States Senators, cited new research from the National Institutes of Health’s PATH study, which found that children do not smoke premium cigars on a daily or frequent basis. The letter noted that premium cigars “are a unique product with a unique consumer base” and expressed concern that “additional regulation of premium cigars could force small businesses across the country to close and harm historic, American premium cigar manufacturers.”
The letter urged FDA to exempt premium cigars as defined in S. 294 and H.R. 564, the “Traditional Cigar Manufacturing and Small Business Jobs Preservation Act of 2017,” which was sponsored by Senators Nelson and Rubio and Representatives Castor and Posey and co-sponsored by 20 Senators and 144 Representatives. This bipartisan legislation was previously co-sponsored by Vice President Mike Pence and Office and Management and Budget Director Mick Mulvaney when they were in the House of Representatives.
Drew Newman, General Counsel of J.C. Newman Cigar Co. of Tampa, Florida issued the following statement:

“We are very grateful to Senators Nelson and Rubio for their leadership in working to save America’s historic premium cigar industry from being destroyed by excessive government regulation. In a hyper-politicized age, this letter shows that saving the many small, family businesses and jobs that make up America’s premium cigars industry is truly a bipartisan issue that transcends political party lines.”

“In 2016, the FDA decided to apply the same, massive and exorbitantly expensive regulatory regime designed for cigarettes to artisanal, hand-crafted premium cigars like the ones that my family has been rolling for 123 years. The agency’s ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach doesn’t work. The cost of complying with the requirements for new enormous health warning labels, detailed chemical analysis, and premarket review are extreme. According to current estimates, it will cost more than $30 million for our historic Tampa cigar factory to comply with FDA regulation — more than three times the factory’s annual revenue. According to FDA’s own estimates, regulation is expected to put up to 50% of the premium cigar industry out of business.”
“As Senators Nelson and Rubio noted in their letter, new research — funded by FDA or written by FDA staff — has found that children do not smoke premium cigars, premium cigars are smoked infrequently, premium cigars are distinct from other tobacco products, and smoking premium cigars does not increase the risk of mortality. This new research shows that the basis for regulating tobacco products simply does not apply to premium cigars.
“The 17 Senators submitted this letter as a comment to the Advanced Notice of Public Rulemaking on Premium Cigars. Through July 25, the FDA is accepting comments from any member of the public on the regulation of premium cigars. If you have not already done so, please visit www.SaveCigarCity.com to submit your comments urging that the FDA exempt premium cigars from regulation today. It is very important for everyone who enjoys premium cigars to make their voice heard.”
Letter Signers:
Senator Bill Nelson (D-FL)
Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL)
Senator John Boozman (R-AR)
Senator Robert P. Casey, Jr. (D-PA)
Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR)
Senator Joe Donnelly (D-IN)

News: Gurkha to Debut Remastered Cigars at IPCPR 2018

Here’s some Friday news from Gurkha.  Interesting use of the term “re-mastered”, takes me back to my days working in a record store in the 80s!

Gurkha Cigars has re-mastered several predicate blends to create several impressive cigars that will be introduced at the industry’s largest and most important tradeshow in July.   International Premium Cigar & Pipe Retailers Association (IPCPR) 86thAnnual Convention and International Trade show is set to take place in Las Vegas on July 13th and Gurkha will be unveiling the Chateau de Prive, Marquesa and Ghost Gold.  The company has also decided to continue production of the Cellar Reserve 10th Anniversary due to popular demand.

“We are excited to introduce these cigars that underscore Gurkha’s focus on creating quality cigars for all palettes,” said Kaizad Hansotia, CEO of Gurkha Cigars.   “Our blending team worked hard to create cigars that would be a great addition to any cigar lovers humidor.”

Chateau de Prive

The Chateau de Prive in a limited edition box will be a unique and welcomed addition to Gurkha’s flavor profile.  While most Gurkha smokes are notable for their spicy and bold flavor, the Chateau de Prive is a more traditional mild and creamy smoke that is typically found with many of the high-end Dominican cigars but as with all Gurkha products, this cigar will feature an exquisite complexity from flavor to packaging.  This cigar will be a special release for the IPCPR and available in three sizes worldwide.  The initial run will be very limited with only 300 boxes available per size.

Chateau de PriveThe cigars will be available in 20 count boxes in the following three sizes:

  • Bishop (5×50) –  $10/cigars (MSRP)
  • Rook (6×46) – $10/cigars (MSRP)
  • King of Warriors (6.5×52) – $11/cigars (MSRP)

This velvety smoke is made with an Ecuadorian Desflorado wrapper, a Dominican Olor binder and Dominican filler.  They will ship in October/November for a holiday release.

MARQUESA

Marquesa is a beautiful throwback cigar reminiscent of the flavor and packaging of pre-embargo Cuba.  The cigar was designed to have a vintage Cuban feel from the blend, which is a spicy “Cubanesque” flavor, to the packaging.

The cigars will be available in three sizes in 20 count boxes (10 round and 10 box press cigars) for the following sizes:

  • Robusto (5×52) – $8/cigar (MSRP)
  • Toro (6×54) – $9/cigar (MSRP)
  • Belicoso (5×54) – $9/cigar (MSRP)

The Marquesa features an earthy Sumatra wrapper, a Nicaraguan binder and an Ometepe and Esteli Nicaragua filler resulting in a bold well-balanced medium body and spicy cigar.  The Marquesa is expected to ship in August.

GHOST GOLD

The success and popularity of Gurkha’s Ghost led the company to expand its offerings with this blend. Gurkha dug deep into their predicate blend book to fine-tune this cigar, which has a bolder profile than the original Ghost.

The cigars will initially be available 21 count boxes in the following three sizes:

  • Shadow (5×52) – $8/cigar (MSRP)
  • Asura (6×54) – $9/cigar (MSRP)
  • Exorcist (6×60) – $11/cigar (MSRP)

This smoke will appeal to the medium and full-bodied smokers and is made of an Ecuadorian Habano wrapper changing the complexity of flavor from the original Ghost’s sweet flavor profile to a nutty and earthy profile.  An aged Criollo 1998 Binder and carefully selected U.S., Dominican and Nicaraguan fillers complement the Habano wrapper. The Ghost Gold is expected to ship in August.

CELLAR RESERVE 10TH ANNIVERSARY

The special edition Cellar Reserve cigar debuted at last year’s IPCPR to commemorate the Cellar Reserve’s 10-year anniversary, Gurkha’s first brick and mortar cigar and its most successful brand.  They were introduced in a limited edition humidor but due to popular demand the company has decided to continue production in a 24-count box and available in only one size. This medium body, full-flavor and extremely complex smoke will come with Rosado Habano wrapper, aged Dominican filler and a Dominican Olor binder.

  • Executive Toro (6×52) – $12/cigar (MSRP)

The Cellar Reserve 10-year anniversary will be ready to ship by August.
