Leccia Tobacco Desnudo Sunday Video Cigar Review

Sunday afternoon I assembled a group of friends and we smoked the new Desnudo Robusto from Leccia Tobacco. My wife bought me a box of these in the 5″ x 54 size, the same size as my favorite Leccia Luchador El Hombre, and the presentation is spectacular. The box is woven from what I believe is Royal Palm bark, the same thing that is used to wrap bales of tobacco in some countries (called Tercios). The blend of the Desnudo is Brazilian Wrapper, Habano Binder, Filler: Brazilian, Nicaragua Ligero and Pennsylvania Ligero. I smoked another one tonight as I was putting the video here together, and really love the cigar. It’s exactly what I love in a cigar, watch the video to see what we thought (don’t worry, none of us were “desnudo” in the video).

Leccia_BarberPoleSam included a couple of bonus cigars with the box, one of which I smoked last night. This was a Churchill sized barber pole style cigar, wrapped in what appeared to me Ecuador Connecticut and Habano. The interesting feature of this cigar was that it came pre-punched, but instead of  a circular punch it had the Leccia Tobacco “L” logo punched in it. I chose to smoke it as is, I saw no reason to disturb this cool cut out, which obviously took a lot of time and energy to come up with Leccia_BarberPole_Capand manufacture. I’m sure Sam got some “you want me to do what?” looks on the rolling floor! Maybe Sam rolled these himself, I really don’t know (if he did, well done!). The cigar was sweet and creamy and was quite different from the Desnudo or the Luchador line. The burn meandered a bit, but I find that with many barber pole style cigars. Bottom line is, I enjoyed it a lot.  Sam is handing his own distribution now, and selling some of his lines, including the Desnudo, direct to the consumer. Sam is a great guy, despite being a Penguins fan, and he makes some really tasty cigars and does some incredible things on a rolling table.

**Edit: It’s been brought to my attention that the “L” punch is laser cut, which makes a lot more sense. **

That’s all for now, until the next time,

Winner of the General Cigar New Releases Contest and the 2015 IPCPR Secret Question

What an excellent turnout we had for this contest. Who can blame the 97 people who entered though, it’s a pretty darned nice bunch of cigars! I almost had second thoughts about including some of them, but cigars are about sharing, and it’s as much fun to give than receive. Before I announce the winner (or to make you go to the trouble of scrolling down to see who won), A couple of years ago I put together a montage video from the IPCPR show, and I decided to do the same thing this time around, with a new and interesting question. The whole point is to keep things light and not to end up with the same interview videos that everyone else does. As always, I strive to be different. Credit goes to my wife, Jennifer, for the idea, and thanks to the thirty-something manufacturers for going along with it! So if you have twelve minutes or so, give this a watch, maybe have a laugh.

Contest

ContestOK, so I consulted the random number generator at Random.org and it spit out the number 43. I counted the entries and determined that Matt Wells is the winner! Please send your address so I can ship this load of cigars out to you. Thanks to everyone for entering, I think I’ll have contests on the first Wednesdays of the next couple months, so keep an eye open. If you’re on Twitter, follow @CigarContests for the heads up on my contests, as well as other contests going on. Whoever is running this is doing a nice job of curating cigar giveaways. Thanks again to the folks at General Cigar Co.!

That’s it for today, until the next time,

IPCPR 2015 – Dunbarton Tobacco and Trust Cigars with Steve Saka

I told you today’s post would be from the show, and we spent Saturday catching up with some old friends, meeting some new ones and only seeing about half of the show floor.  We will venture into the other end later today and tomorrow, but so far it’s been a lot of fun, but tiring. It’s going to be a challenge to see everyone I hoped to see, but I hope to leave here Tuesday with no regrets, and a lot to write about in the coming weeks.  It seemed like the day one turnout was light, but the vendors I talked to were writing orders and seemed pleased.  I only smoked two cigars on the show floor today, Victor Vitale’s Tortuga Connecticut, and Sam Leccia’s newest Luchador, the El Guapo, a short 70 ring box pressed cigar which was very nice.  I managed to get one special interview, I believe it’s the first you’ll see from the show.

DunbartonDay one of the IPCPR trade show in New Orleans was quite busy for one of the new exhibitors, Steve Saka, former president and CEO of Drew Estate. He debuted Dunbarton Tobacco and Trust, although his first release, Sobremesa, isn’t ready yet, he reportedly sold several times the number of boxes he anticipated and was busy all day.  I had the great pleasure of sitting down with him at his booth after he show closed and captured this 15 minute video of his very in depth description of the cigar and his company.  I’ve known Steve for many years, and he’s always fun to talk to, so please enjoy this video which pushes the limits of YouTube’s time limit!  Thanks to Steve and his wife Cindy and son Jon for their hospitality. I can’t wait to sample this new cigar in a few months!

Please note, the volume is low, my apologies for that. Please remember to turn down your volume when you are done!

That’s all for now, until the next time,

In the Cigar Mojo Humidor with Fred Rewey of Nomad Cigars and a Contest Winner!

imageSunday we spent the afternoon at Cigar Mojo In King of Prussia, PA with Fred Rewey of Nomad Cigar Co. and Alex Mayer, our local House of Emilio rep hanging out, shooting the bull and smoking cigars. I was lucky enough to smoke Fred’s newest offering, the Nomad Lot 8613 in a robusto size, thanks to Alex. I would have bought some of these, but they weren’t in the shop yet, so I bought some S-307s, one of which I enjoyed this evening.  The Lot 8613, as Fred explains in the video below, is the sustainable version of his limited edition Lot 1386 (I have one of those in one of the humidors someplace), and was a very good smoke. It was just right for the early afternoon, after breakfast, but before lunch time that we were there. It’s always fun visiting with Fred, he told us about the “Hacking the Blend” seminars he’s doing breaking imagedown a cigar with puros of each component.  While I haven’t caught Fred’s rendition of this sort of event, I have done it before and it’s a great way to appreciate how a cigar is put together by tasting each individual leaf that goes into a blend. It’s no easy task finding tobaccos that work well together, that’s for sure. Anyway, check out the Nomad line when you get a chance, there’s something in the line for everyone.

Here’s my latest installment of “In the Cigar Mojo Humidor” for your entertainment.

Gran Habano STK Baracuda and a Marcus Daniel Cigars Kiev and a Video

GranHabanoSTK_Baracuda_MaduroIt’s been a slow smoking week for me, the bitter cold here having some bearing on that.  So I figured it would be a good time so smoke some new, interesting and unusual cigars.  Friday I decided to spark up the Baracuda Maduro that the the folks at Gran Habano had sent me a few months ago. This was presented at last summer’s IPCPR show, and features a Pennsylvania Broadleaf wrapper, not something you typically see!  The wrapper was a few shades lighter than a typical maduro, and it had a totally different flavor than I have come to expect from a cigar labeled “maduro”.  That being said, the flavor was exceptional! Very different and unique, with frequent flavor changes that made it very interesting. One moment there would be some coffee flavors, the next some earth and pepper. This was a very entertaining cigar to smoke and I’ll be on the look out for a couple more to see if the experience repeats.

MarcusDanielKiev_LR_Gran ParejoA couple months ago a recent;y retired former co-worker returned from a wedding in Florida where he met a cigar roller who was demonstrating his skill at the wedding.  Knowing I  am a cigar fan, this gentlemen managed to procure some samples after chatting up the gentleman rolling, who was, apparently, Marcus Daniel Morine, the proprietor of Marcus Daniel Tobacconist in Olde Naples, Florida.  The three cigars I was given were all on the larger side, and I wanted to give them some humidor time before smoking them, as I had no idea how long they had been out of the humidor and wanted to give them the best opportunity to present themselves as the blender intended.  There were two of the Dominican made Kiev line of cigars, a “Cloud Grown” Ecuador Connecticut, and a Habano Limited Reserve, and a Miami made Marcus Daniel® Habano.  I chose the darker of the three last night for my evening walk and cigar, the Kiev LR Gran Parejo. This is a substantial cigar, 6½” x 57, well made, with an easy draw.  My example had a bit of damage on the foot, which I never noticed at all when smoking.  It burned perfectly and had pleasant flavors on the medium bodied side.  As I’m writing this and doing a little research, I came across the price list for these on their website and I don’t think I would buy this cigar in the $45 price bracket. I was a bit stunned at that pricing. For me, it was a good, $8 or$9 cigar, nothing so special to warrant that kind of pricing (really, what cigar does?), but it was a nice, satisfying smoke.

Since I’m a little light on content this time, I thought I’d share a neat video that I was asked to watch and share.  Frank Correnti Cigars in Toronto, Canada, has been making what were called “Clear Havanas” in the ’50s. They hand make cigars from Havana leaf, and claim to be the only factory doing that in Canada.  I’ve never smoked their cigars, but I’ve heard of them over the years, and the folks at Notion Boulevard did a really nice job with this video.  Thanks to Zack there for passing this along.

That’s if for today. Not sure what’s on my schedule, but I may try another one of the cigars from Marcus Daniel, or I may rummage around for something else that strikes me as interesting, I rarely know until I dive into the humidors what I’m going to smoke at any given time.  So, until the next time,
