This Week’s Cigars: Acid, Padron, Cohiba, Fuente – Monday December 6, 2010

I’m a little conflicted about this weeks reviews.  A week or two ago I received an unsolicited e-mail from the folks at Thompson Cigars offering to send me some samples for review.  Thompson has been around for many years, and has a bit of a reputation as an aggressive marketer.   I’ve been unfortunate enough to have smoked some of their house brands in the past, but I have taken advantage of the occasional deal advertised in magazines.  I have to think that they have been in the business for so long because they do something right, so I gave them the benefit of the doubt. They were kind enough to send me four cigars for review, none of which were house brands.

One of the cigars was an Acid Blondie Belicoso.  To their credit, they had this cigar bagged separately from the other three.  I’ve become a big fan of Drew Estate’s traditional blends, Liga Privadas are in my top 5, and I even enjoy the occasional coffee infused Tabak Especial, but I never envisioned myself smoking an Acid.  Many years ago my wife smoked a Kuba Kuba and I tasted it and cringed.  So it was with some hesitation that I lit up this odd smelling Blondie.  Now there can be no doubt that they use excellent tobacco in these cigars, and they are expertly crafted.  I must admit to rather enjoying this cigar.  The saccharin sweetness on the head was a little much, but the flavor wasn’t terrible, mild and nutty.  It burned perfectly, was reasonably mild and inoffensive.  The next morning my wife mentioned that my jacket smelled like perfumed kitty litter…which I though was pretty funny!

The next cigar I smoked was a Padron Londres.  It’s been ages since I smoked one of these, and it’s nice to know they haven’t change.  You can always count on the Padrons to make excellent cigars, and this one was no exception.  It was a rustic looking cigar, the natural wrapper had seems that were lifted and veins galore.  As ugly as it was, it burned and drew right up there with the best of them.  It had bold flavors of Nicaraguan tobacco which was neither too strong, or too mild.  It was just right.  The 5½ x 42 size is among my favorites as well, which was a large part of my decision to grab this one next.

Following the Padron I smoked a Cohiba Lonsdale Grande which measures in at 6¼” x 47, which is a nice size for a cigar.  The Cohiba brand as a whole is not one I normally purchase, not sure if it’s due to the perception that I’m not getting the bang for the buck that I’d like, but I generally enjoy them when I’ve smoked them.  The Cohiba sports a nice looking and toothy Cameroon wrapper, which is the main flavor I get, which is good since I love a nice Cameroon wrapper.  The construction is excellent, as one would expect.  Overall I enjoyed this cigar, but, as I said, not one I would generally pick up.

The last cigar in the bunch was an Arturo Fuente Chateau Series King B, saved until last because this was the one I looked forward to the most.  This was a beautiful belicoso, measuring 6″ x 55.  It has a sun-grown wrapper with a reddish hue.  The flavor was fairly delicate and subtle, with some sweetness and cedar.  This is one cigar that I will look for in the future as it is definitely a cigar I’d like to smoke again.

All in all, this was a terrific bunch of cigars.  I am rethinking my opinion of Thompson Cigar Co.  As I said, they have been around a long time and are obviously doing something right.  I have purchased cigars from many of the major outlets, and they all write the same silly things in their catalogs, this cigar is better than Cubans, and other embellishments. It’s unfair of me to single one out, especially one that, as far as I can tell, is privately held and not owned by one of the big cigar companies, and has been in business for 85 years.   I appreciate them giving me the opportunity to sample these cigars. Please give them the benefit of the doubt as I have.

Don’t forget to enter to win some cool Joya de Nicaragua stuff by leaving a comment on my last post.  Contest ends December 19, 2010.

Until the next time,

Weekend Cigars: RyJ Short Churchills – Sunday November 14, 2010

To set the stage:  A month or so ago I did a very small favor for one of my readers who wanted to order some merchandise from a company that wouldn’t ship to an APO.  Since I have no problem using USPS.com to ship to one of our members of the military serving his country abroad, I asked him to have the package shipped to me so I could get it to him.  Naturally, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to include a couple cigars for him to enjoy, ones from my regular rotation that I wanted to share, and one of the Hamiltons House cigars from the box I purchased after interviewing George Hamilton.  Well, a week or two after he received his box in good order, the same box shows up on my doorstep with return fire.  He took a beautiful Casa Magna box and included several FINE cigars, as well as a note on his stationary and a really cool medallion.  I am

humbled by the gift, and am most thankful, these are cigars that I very rarely have the opportunity to sample.  One of these cigars is the subject of this post.

The Romeo y Julieta Short Churchills is a relatively new cigar from Habanos S.A., launched in 2006.  It’s a Robusto measuring 4 7/8″ x 50 and has a nice light colored wrapper.  If this cigar had a box press, it had regained it’s roundness by the time it got into my hands.  As stated in my last post, I have laid off of cigars for the last week and a half or so due to a sinus infection, so I figured it would be as good a time as any to spark up a special cigar.  It was a beautiful autumn day here in south-east PA and I was due to take my Saturday walk to the local convenience store.  I have had he good fortune to smoke it’s namesake, the Churchill on several occasions and have never really been “wow”ed, good cigar, but I was expecting so much more from an iconic cigar.  On the other hand, I bought a box of RyJ Coronita en Cedro, which are a very inexpensive  petit corona that I passed out at my daughter’s wedding a few years back and enjoyed them VERY much.  So I entered into this cigar with moderate expectations, but high hopes that my first cigar in over a week wouldn’t disappoint.   Of course, it didn’t disappoint.  It was a nice, mellow cigar, but had that tell-tale Cuban “twang” that you just don’t taste in non-Cuban cigars. It burned as well as a Havana cigar can be expected to burn, however I did have to re-light it once after setting it down for a few minutes.  Upon re-light it was as good as new, with fairly mellow and woodsy flavors.   I liked it, I would smoke it again in a heartbeat.  I greatly appreciate the gift.

That’s about as close to a cigar review

as you can expect from me, until I fire up one of the other cigars in that package.  I’m still working on that contest, and am planning another blockbuster celeb interview for the very near future so stay tuned!

Until the next time,

Pictured here are the custom wrapped cigars that Sam gave Corey and I.  He told Corey that he’d have to smoke his, because the bunch he used was one of the original release of the Nubs.  I know that I couldn’t bring myself to smoke this one or the last one he gave me, which is similar to the one he made in the first video.  It’s amazing the detail he puts into these cigars, they are beautiful works of art.  Sam is a tremendous guy and if he makes an appearance in your neighborhood make a point to go see him.  Old Havana Cigar Co, is a nicely appointed shop located in a strip mall between West Chester, PA and Wilmington Delaware.   They have a broad range of cigars in a large walk-in humidor, as well as a spacious lounge in the back.  The access through the humidor is reminiscent of the set up at Holt’s in Philadelphia, but I think the lounge is larger.  The front of the store features Humidors, cases and other accessories.  Sam had his rolling table set up in the front of the store.

The Nub Cameroon 358 was a nice smoke that I enjoyed despite a sinus infection and a very smoky roo

m.  The cigar burned very well and, like I told Sam and have always said about the Nub line, would be much better if it were a little longer.  Still I spent an hour or so with this cigar that the box said was good for 38 minutes (a very c

lever idea, putting the smoking time on the box).

Sunday was Halloween, which is always a traditional cigar night for me.  I grabbed a nice green Camacho Corojo Candela Monarca and sat on the porch with my

wife, the gas heater, and all the trick-or-treaters.  We live in a development that is fairly large and it’s not unusual to get 150 or more kids visiting us.  The cigar was awesome, I really enjoy these every now and then for a change of pace.  This box has been pretty consistent in that this cigars all have had a very loose draw.  I’ve come to compensate for this by piercing the cap instead of cutting it, but I was distracted and lopped off the cap.  I was careful not to over draw and nursed the cigar for the duration of the trick-or-treating.

That’s about all I have this time around, I feel a contest coming along in the very near future so stay tuned.

Until the next time,

This Week’s Cigars: Cigar Factory New Orleans Sampler – Wednesday October 27, 2010

Back in August, you may recall, my family took a trip to New Orleans and one of the souvenirs I picked up was a three cigar sampler from Cigar Factory New Orleans.  Actually, my son and I both picked up the sampler, and smoked them together.  I’ll include my interpretation of his impressions along with my own.  The sampler was packaged in a very nice slide top box, containing a box of matches and a brochure with informati

on about the blends.  We visited both locations while we were there and were impressed with the talent of the rollers as well as the knowledge of the folks working there. Over the course of the last week my son and I smoked the 3 coronas that were contained in the sampler box.  I selected the order starting with what I judged the mildest an moving up to what I figured would be the strongest.

The first cigar was the 5 ¼” x 44 Plantation Reserve corona.  This cigar had a Connecticut shade wrapper, which led me to expect a mild cigar.  While certainly not a strong cigar, I wouldn’t characterize it as mild.  C

orey enjoyed this one more than I did.  I found it to have a bitterness that was off-putting.  It burned and drew perfectly and was a very nice looking cigar.

The second cigar was the Vieux Carre Cafe, which at 6″ x 46 is less of a corona than a lonsdale, but still a very nice size.  This one sports an African Cameroon wrapper, however, I didn’t get that usual Camerooniness that I associate with that wrapper.  Maybe I just got another dud, because I thought this cigar lacked any real character, there were even some just plain bad flavors every now and then.  Again, Corey enjoyed his example, despite a small wrapper split at the head.  Again, the burn and draw were spot on.

The third cigar in the box was the Tres Hermanos Numero Tres, a 5¼” x 46 corona gorda.  This is just about my favorite size wrapped with a Broad-leaf Maduro wrapper.  As a broad-leaf fan from way back, my expectations were again high.  This time I wasn’t disappointed.  It started out very aggressively, with a big spicy blast of flavor.  It settled down pretty quickly to a fairly full bodied and full flavored hour or so of cigar goodness.  Clearly my favorite of the trio.  These folks do know how to construct a cigar, because the burn was razor straight and the draw was perfect. Corey concurred and even commented that he would consider purchasing this cigar again. I have read reviews of cigars that mentioned dried dark fruit and, until now, I never thought I’d taste such a thing in a cigar.  I think I actually did taste something akin to dried plums or something similar.  I say this risking ridicule as I really don’t consider myself much of a cigar reviewer.  This is a cigar both my son and I smoked to a finger burning nub.

In summary, Corey enjoyed all of the cigars in this sampler, while I only really enjoyed the Tres Hermanos.  This sampler was around $22, which I thought was expensive, but I accepted it as being in a tourist area and figured it was a souvenir.  They sell these in boxes of 10 and 25, and are not really too unreasonably priced in those quantities.  I would actually consider buying the Tres Hermanos again.  My one criticism is that their website gives only very vague information about the blends. I would like to know if the Tres Hermanos is wrapped in a Connecticut Broad-leaf or some other kind of broad-leaf, or if there is any local tobacco in the blend.  The best part of the whole experience was having been in the storefront factory and watching them roll cigars, as well has sharing the experience with my 21 year old son.  If you ever find yourself in the Crescent City, stop in and try some of their cigars!

That’s it for now, until the next time,

Guest Review: Diesel Unlimited d.5 by Tommy Berry Jr. – Sunday October 24, 2010

My name is Tommy and man do I love a great cigar…at any time of the day! I smoke on a regular basis and try to get at least one in a day. I have been smoking throughout the past fifteen years. I was born and raised in East Texas and currently live with my wonderful wife and three kids. I love the Lord and all of the things that He has put into my life. Besides smoking cigars, I enjoy spending time with my family, listening to records, hunting, fishing, working with wood in my shop, watching sports and my day job of working for a local Architect firm. I also enjoy spending time on the internet buying, researching, reviewing, and chatting with other BOTL’s about cigars. Please feel free to email me if you ever have any questions regarding cigars. If I don’t know the answer, I can sure point you to the right source.

Diesel Unlimited

The Diesel Unlimited is the latest of three cigars created by masterblender AJ Fernandez. This cigar was recently released during the 2010 IPCPR in New Orleans. The previous two cigars in this line are the Diesel Unholy Cocktail and the Diesel Shorty, both great smokes for full body cigar lovers. AJ is also known for many other brands that he has created, such as the Rocky Patel Fusion, Man O’ War, and the Padilla Habano.

Price:

I recently ordered me a box of these, after trying one from a friend. I ordered and will be reviewing the d.5 (5.5×54), one of several sizes in this line. These come in boxes of 20 from anywhere between $59 to $89, nicely bundled with burlap in a great looking, yet simple cedar box. These cigars retail for around $3.50/a stick…a great price for a well made, full body smoke…packing lots of punch and flavor!

Accompaniments:

I paired this tasting with a glass of ice cold water! I did not want anything else to come through from any spirits…so that I could enjoy the stick as a whole…and all by its lonesome!

Cigar…before the smoke:

Let me explain the cigar as it appears. As you may be able to see in the photos, this has a very dark, Honduran Ligero wrapper that is grown in the Copan region of Honduras. It is quiet oily in appearance and has been crafted beautifully. This is one of the best looking cigars that I have seen. The cold draw had a very nice draw to it and it held hints of chocolate. This cigar has a very nice feel to it…a nice hefty cigar for its size. On a side note, I am beginning to realize that I really enjoy this particular size of a cigar, as I love the fell of its shape in my hand and mouth.

Burn:

After lighting this cigar, it burned quiet unevenly for about the first 10 puffs. However, with a little help from a single torch lighter, I was able to even it up myself…and the rest of the cigar held an outstandingly even burn. It also held a rather cool burn throughout the cigar, down to the nub! The only other issue I had (besides the initial uneven burn) was that it went out one time, at about the halfway point. I was able to quickly get it relit without compromising its flavors. I would like to add that this cigar also had a perfect, easy draw while smoking.

The ash on this cigar held a “salt and pepper” appearance while holding its ash for about an inch and a half before falling off when I placed it on my ashtray. It continued this appearance throughout the entire smoke.

The smoke was very aromatic (flavors listed below) and was white with hints of light blue in color. A beautiful colored smoke to me!

Flavors:

The Diesel Unlimited held a very nutty flavor. It often reminded me of almonds and walnuts…with even an occasional hint of pecans. The nuttiness lasted through most of the cigar. It also had hints of black pepper, some hints of coffee beans, and the occasional hint of chocolate and leather. If I had to pick one flavor that stood out for me, it would be the nuttiness…which was a nice change from other smokes that sometimes can contain too much “pepper”.

In regards to the overall flavor and strength, this cigar is a full body smoke…but to me, a well seasoned smoker, it was a bit on the mild side…which was great as it allowed me to be able to successfully pull out individual flavors for this review…as well as my enjoyment! This also allows folks that do not smoke often, or are new to the scene…to be able to enjoy this cigar without making themselves sick…that’s a plus!

Overall:

If you are either a long time cigar smoker, or a beginner…this cigar is one I highly recommend you try. You can’t beat the price with this quality, the flavors are awesome, and it should be rated well in any other review. At this point, I can’t honestly say that I like it more than the Unholy Cocktail (which is on my top 5 list)…but it sure gets close, and on the same token…coming from the same line of AJ’s cigars…it was a nice change. I am glad that I bought a box of these!

Many thanks to Tommy for writing up a very nice review. I’m envious of those who can put their tastes into words like this. I will attempt to include more guest reviews in the future.

That’s it for now,
