News: Macanudo Announces the Macanudo Vintage 2010

It’s another Wednesday where I really haven’t smoked anything new to write about. I smoked some classic cigars over the last few days, a Don CArlos No. 2, a LFD Double Ligero Maduro, and a Joya de Nicaragua Antaño, for instance. So here’s some news from General Cigar. One of my favorite Macanudos was the Vintage 1997, the maduro with the metal band. The metal bands were cool, but impractical. They caused problems in the humidor, and were unwieldy. The cigars were exceptional though. I remember seeing them making the boxes in the Dominican Republic when I visited the factory, and I still have a box on my desk with nick nacks in it.

The world’s first Vintage cigar was created by Macanudo nearly 40 years ago to spotlight an exceptional wrapper developed in part by Mother Nature herself. Today, the Vintage tradition continues with Macanudo Vintage 2010, thanks to ideal climatic conditions, meticulous curing and precise maturation techniques perfected by the artisans of Macanudo.

The 2010 growing season saw the highest temperatures in 25 years in the Connecticut River Valley, with high humidity and optimal rainfall that yielded an exceptionally silky shade-grown wrapper tobacco. Cured and aged for an entire decade to bring forth an array of pleasing notes on the palate, this singular tobacco makes its debut in Macanudo Vintage 2010.

Ernest Gocaj who oversees the Connecticut growing operations for Macanudo said, “We could not have asked for a better growing season than we had in 2010. Yet this is only part of the story. After such a beautiful crop is harvested, the hard work begins again because the most critical process for growing tobacco is curing. Given how unique and special this crop was, we were obsessive in monitoring the tobacco throughout the eight-week curing process, and ultimately brought its very best attributes to life.”

A deeply-aged assortment of tobaccos complement this exceptional wrapper to deliver the mellow indulgence that is Macanudo Vintage 2010. The blend features Dominican Piloto Cubano 94, a proprietary Cuban-seed varietal regenerated by General Cigar’s agronomists over a ten-year process that ultimately resurrected the unique aroma and taste characteristics the tobacco possessed two decades earlier. The Dominican Piloto Cubano 94 is married to hand-selected Nicaraguan and Honduran leaves, aged three and five years, respectively. The blend is bound with a Honduran leaf.

With a fragrant cedar aroma, this creamy, mellow smoke has indulgent notes of wood and vanilla and a lightly herbaceous finish, and all the makings of an incredibly memorable smoking experience.

Macanudo Vintage 2010 will be released on August 17 in three sizes, each developed to enhance the superlative wrapper tobacco. The cigars are presented in handmade, solid wood boxes that protect 20 expertly-crafted cigars, each made by artisans at General Cigar Dominicana in Santiago, DR.

Toro Grande (6.625” x 54); SRP per cigar $11.99

Torpedo (6.25” x 52); SRP per cigar $11.99

Churchill (7.25 x 48); SRP per cigar $12.29

News: CAO Announces Flathead V21 Release

The CAO Flathead line has been about my favorite CAO line since the acquisition. This one sounds especially tasty, with the San Andrés wrapper over the Broadleaf binder. I can think of a few cigars that I like with Broadleaf wrappers over Mexican binders, so I can’t imagine the inverse wouldn’t tickle my fancy. I look forward to trying these, even though they are priced on the high side.

CAO FLATHEAD V21

CAO is about to put the pedal to the metal with a souped-up follow-up to the wildly-popular V-19 blend. Called CAO Flathead V21, this new release was created by Rick Rodriguez and the CAO blending team in Nicaragua to kick the Flathead franchise into high gear.

Rick and the team selected a Mexican San Andres wrapper for the blend which also includes a Connecticut Broadleaf binder, and a bold selection of Nicaraguan and Dominican ligero tobaccos. They then gave each of the filler leaves an abbreviated fermentation to lock in the tobacco’s native characteristics and added a secondary aging process to the filler to bring everything together. The result is a cigar with a medium to medium-full profile brimming with distinctive molasses and leather notes, this time with even more depth and complexity.

“For Flathead V21, we wanted to give our fans a cigar that’s bold and complex, and still perfect for any smoking occasion,” said Rick Rodriguez. “We see this as the ultimate cigar for the CAO smoker who wants to experience the complexity of each tobacco with every draw. I’ve personally enjoyed V21 on its own and with a drink and have experienced different notes every time I smoke it. To me, that means we’ve done our job.”

Crafted at STG Estelí in Nicaragua, CAO Flathead V21 will be released in two sizes, and production is limited to just 2,000 boxes per size. The blend will only be available for a limited time and begins shipping to retailers on August 3.

The boxes that house CAO Flathead V21 are racecar red, with a bold black sash that culminates in the brand’s logo on the front of the box. Each box contains 27 cigars.

Carb V21 (6 x 60) – SRP per cigar $13.99

Big Block V21 (7 x 70) – SRP per cigar $14.99

News: Drew Estate to Release 2021 Liga Privada Unico Serie “Year of the Rat” Limited Edition

Here’s some news from Drew Estate. I’ve smoked several of the Year of the Rat from the last couple years and they are really quite good cigars. Over the last dozen years I guess I’ve smoked a number of Drew Estate’s “Rat” themed cigars, going back to 2009 when Steve Saka gave me Dirty Rats with plain paper bands, this might be one of my favorites. Hopefully they will remain the same.

Drew Estate’s 2021 limited edition Liga Privada Unico Serie “Year of the Rat” will become available exclusively to Drew Diplomat Program participants beginning in the week of July 6th.

Liga Privada Unico Serie Year of the Rat debuted in 2016 as an exclusive cigar available only at the Drew Estate Lounge inside the BB&T Center, home to the National Hockey League’s Florida Panthers, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the team’s only appearance in the Stanley Cup Finals. One night, during the 1995-1996 season, a rat appeared in the Panthers’ locker room before a game. Panthers’ player, Scott Mellanby, “one-timed” the rat with his hockey stick, sending it against the wall and killing it. During that night’s game, Mellanby scored two goals … a feat that a teammate described as the “rat trick.” A few nights later, fans began throwing rubber rats onto the ice whenever the Panthers scored a goal, and for that season, a tradition was born. In 2020, the Year of the Rat was re-released as a Drew Diplomat Program event exclusive cigar. For 2021, the Liga Privada Unico Serie Year of the Rat limited edition cigar’s distribution has grown, and it is now available to all Drew Diplomat Program participants.

Like the previous Year of the Rat editions, the 2021 Year of the Rat is presented in the Corona Gorda vitola (5 1⁄2 x 46) and is made using a blend of lush Connecticut Broadleaf capa, flavorful Brazilian capote and rich tripa tobaccos from Nicaragua and Honduras. Each 2021 Liga Privada Unico Serie Year of the Rat features the Unico Serie’s iconic fantail head and every cigar is individually wrapped in gold foil. The cigars are packaged in beautifully embossed, blue 10-count Liga Privada Unico Serie boxes.

From Sag Harbor, New York, Jonathan Drew, Founder and President of Drew Estate, says, “When these dirty Rats first appeared, the only chance you got to catch one was by attending one of my personal Drew Estate events but the Rat infestation has grown to become more accessible to Liga Privada Ratters to snag one of these rare and tasty treats. You better act fast though because this Rat race will end soon!”

The 2021 Liga Privada Unico Serie Year of the Rat will be available exclusively to Drew Diplomat Program partners beginning in early July. The limited edition cigars’ MSRP will be $16.40 per cigar/$164.00 per box.

News: TAA 2021 Exclusive Cigar ‘Brick House Beginnings’ Ships

This looks interesting, I really like the Brick House cigars, and I have a TAA retailer nearby, so I’ll have to check them out. I still want to get to Tampa to visit the remodeled factory, I have a pretty good feeling I could get in…check out this news from J.C. Newman.

Before we could start on the major restoration we just completed at our El Reloj Cigar Factory in Tampa, our team had to clear out almost 70 years’ worth of items from the building. During this process, we uncovered some hidden gems.

One of those was a trap door from the 1930s with a secret staircase that went from the General Managers’ office down into the basement where he could hide when the Tampa Mafia would come through looking for payroll cash. Another was J.C.’s travel trunk that accompanied him on his voyage from Hungary to Cleveland in 1889. But perhaps the most exciting find for fans of our brands was a stash of 10-year-old Brick House cigars that was tucked away in the basement years ago to age and wait for a special occasion to arise. When we rediscovered them during our 125th year, we thought that sharing them with our TAA retailers would be a perfect fit.

Fans of Brick House will recognize the flavor of its distinctive blend but will taste some notable differences in this aged version. The many years that have passed since these were rolled have created a smooth and balanced taste that only time has the ability to do. Through the aging process, the flavors have married and created a cigar more mellow and a bit less spicy than its contemporary counterpart. Discover a taste of history and savor this once-in-a-decade Brick House.

This cigar has now shipped and will be arriving on TAA Retailers’ shelves soon.

Brick House Beginnings – TAA Exclusive Original Aged Blend
Mighty Mighty Maduro (6 ¼” x 60)
10 cigars per box

Mighty Mighty Natural (6 ¼” x 60)

Churchill Natural (7 ¼ x 50)

News: Fratello Announces Fuoco in Classico, Bianco and Oro

Several years ago Fratello made one of the Firecrackers for United Cigars. Oddly, this was one of my favorite Firecrackers, and one of my favorite cigar memories is smoking one of those on the Spanish Steps in Rome. I liked the irony of smoking a cigar with an Italian name in Italy, on the Spanish Steps, made by Spanish speaking peoples. I don’t often smoke smaller cigars, but I really like having cigars of this size around for times when I only have a short time to smoke, and these will be great additions to the line, I especially look forward to the Bianco, which is my favorite of the Fratello range.
