News:  Patrimonio by Casa Cuevas Cigars Now Shipping

Here’s some news from Casa Cuevas.  They make some great cigars and are really nice folks!

Casa Cuevas Cigars announces that the Patrimonio cigar brand is now shipping! The Patrimonio cigar brand translates to Patrimony in English. It is dedicated to Luis Cuevas Sr. and to the paternal lineage of the Cuevas tobacco history which began over a 100 years ago. The Cuevas family’s tobacco history began when Juan Cuevas, a Spanish expatriate, began growing tobacco in Cuba in the mid-19th century.

The Patrimonio is the brainchild of Luis Cuevas Jr. and son Alec Cuevas. While the Patrimonio was created in conjunction with Master Blender Luis Cuevas Sr. at the Cuevas family-owned Las Lavas Cigar Factory in Santiago, Dominican Republic, the name of the new line, its significance, and its packaging was not revealed to Luis Cuevas, Sr. until the blend itself was finalized. This was in order to surprise Cuevas, Sr. with a line that is an homage to him, his father, and his grandfather.

Luis Cuevas Jr., President of Casa Cuevas Cigars stated: “Patrimonio is a project that is extremely near and dear to my son Alec and myself. When my father left Cuba, he left tobacco behind. Years later, after rebuilding in the U.S.A., he was able to revive our family tobacco history by opening his cigar factory in the Dominican Republic. Because of my father’s perseverance, our family legacy continues to live on.”

Patrmionio is a full-flavored, full-bodied cigar. The blend features tobacco from various regions, with the purpose of creating an extremely complex blend with richly bold flavors. The Patrimionio is composed of a Honduran Corojo wrapper, Ecuadorian Habano binder, and filler made up of Peruvian, Nicaraguan, and Dominican tobaccos.

The Patrimonio blend is available in three vitolas and packaged in 20 count boxes.

5 X 54—Robusto Gordo $10.50

6 X 52—Toro $11.00

6 X 60—Gordo $11.50

News: Joya de Nicaragua Launches TAA Retailer Exclusive Cuatro Cinco Edición Americana

I got behind on some news items this week , so I’m going to post a few on this rainy Saturday. This is one from Joya. This is one of my favorite blends from them. Typically TAA exclusives aren’t all that exciting to me, but this one has potential. I’m to understand that only 5000 cigars are being made available in this release. I’m going to have to get my hands on a few.

Since its founding in 1968 as the first premium cigar company in Nicaragua, Joya de Nicaragua has enjoyed strong ties with American cigar lovers and their retailers. During the administration of Richard M. Nixon, Joya de Nicaragua’s Clásico was even the official cigar distributed to guests attending functions at the White House. In 2021, the United States continues to be one of Joya de Nicaragua’s most important markets and the company is celebrating its strong ties to America by releasing Cuatro Cinco Edición Americana, the second regional edition of its legendary Cuatro Cinco cigars, which will be available exclusively at Tobacconist Association of America (TAA) member retailers.

Since its original release to celebrate Joya de Nicaragua’s 45th anniversary in 2013, the limited edition Cuatro Cinco cigar has been one of Joya de Nicaragua’s most popular cigars and it has consistently been one of the company’s highest rated cigars as well. The highly acclaimed blend features a Nicaraguan Criollo wrapper and select Grade A Nicaraguan filler tobaccos. The finished cigars are aged inside vintage white oak barrels that were used by a world-renown rum distillery for at least one year. The Cuatro Cinco Edición Americana TAA Exclusive is a 6 x 54 Belicoso.

“When we were deciding what the next TAA product should be, we knew it had to be special,” says Joya de Nicaragua’s Executive President, Juan Ignacio Martinez. “When the team proposed the Belicoso, the decision was made, there’s no other vitola in the Cuatro Cinco family that smokes closer to the original limited edition than this one.”

Cuatro Cinco Edición Americana TAA Exclusive is limited to 500 10-count boxes and features special artwork incorporating a bald eagle in the company’s logo on the box, as well as a second band on the foot denoting it as a TAA exclusive cigar.

“These are some of the best cigars that come out of our factory,” says Daniel Barrios, Joya de Nicaragua’s Global Commercial Manager. “The stories we tell with them need to be special. We have selected the bald eagle because of what it represents to our American friends, an example of stamina, power and freedom. In 2021, JDN is celebrating Nicaragua’s independence bicentennial, and what a better symbol to connect us both than the symbol of freedom.”

The Cuatro Cinco Edición Americana TAA Exclusive was formally presented to the trade during the TAA Virtual Conference on March 23rd and it is now being shipped to TAA retailers.

News: Drew Estate Announces Suspension of In-Person Events

I usually avoid posting negative news stories, but this one kind of hits home, since I was planning to attend the Connecticut Barn Smoker next week.  More importantly, I continue to be impressed by the way Jonathan Drew cares about his staff and consumers, and takes these measures to protect them. Say what you want, but I’ve known JD for over a decade, and have first hand experience with him dealing with medical situations, he takes things seriously, and doesn’t fool around when it comes to the health and well being of those in his charge. When my son had a medical emergency in Esteli back in 2011 he was with us in the Esteli ER and wasn’t leaving until he knew everything was OK. I don’t know how I would have handled that situation without him.  So as much as I am saddened to miss the Barn Smoker, I trust that it’s for the best.  There will be another time.

Today Drew Estate announces the cancellation of its 2021 Barn Smoker season, as well as the postponement of DE25 (Drew Estate’s 25th Anniversary Celebration at Southfork Ranch in Dallas, TX) due to increasing health and safety concerns resulting from the rise of the COVID-19 Delta Variant, which continues to spread rapidly throughout the country. For the same reasons, effective August 14th, Drew Estate personnel will not attend any multi-vendor events, trade shows, and, until further notice, will not attend any Drew Estate In-Store Events in person (all of which we will seek to work with our retail partners to hold virtually for the time being).

This decision to suspend all in-person events is designed to ensure the safety of our team members, our valued trade partners, our vendors, and, of course, the tens of thousands of consumers who attend our events nationwide as best we can and applies to all events, inside or outside of any size, including In-Store Sales Events, Multi-Vendor Events, Trade Shows, and Experiential Events.

The following events have been cancelled for the remainder of 2021, postponed (in the case of DE 25th Anniversary Event), or suspended until further notice (in the case of in-person Drew Estate In-Store Events):

Connecticut Barn Smoker – August 13 and 14

DE25 – September 25 (postponed until 2022)

Kentucky Barn Smoker – October 6

Florida Barn Smoker – November 18 and 19

All In-Person Participation at Multi-Vendor Events and Trade Shows (effective August 14th)

All In-Person Drew Estate In-Store Events (effective August 14th, will be replaced as virtual)

For all Barn Smoker attendees, they will receive a full refund of their ticket price within 3-5 business days of this announcement, and will have the first opportunity to purchase Barn Smoker tickets next season. While we have only announced a postponement of DE25, because we do not yet know exactly when circumstances will allow us to reschedule in 2022, we will at this time provide a full refund to all who purchased tickets directly from Drew Estate, and all such ticket purchasers will have the first opportunity to purchase tickets when DE25 is rescheduled. DE25 attendees who purchased a ticket or table directly from Drew Estate/Eventbrite will also receive their refund within 3-5 business days, however if they have purchased a ticket through a retail partner, they should contact that retailer directly.

From Drew Estate Headquarters in Miami, FL, Glenn Wolfson CEO of Drew Estate notes, “This decision was incredibly difficult and painful for our Executive Team, especially knowing how excited all of us were to be back together again for our lifestyle event season, as well as with all of you for our Brick & Mortar events. We want to take this moment to thank our retailers, farmers, suppliers, vendors, and countless others who’ve made significant contributions in partnering with Drew Estate to plan and deliver these world-class events. Many thanks as well to our Territory Managers, Ambassadors, and Marketing team members for their never-ending great work, both at our large experiential events and at our In-Store Events with retail partners.”

Fans of Drew Estate in-store events will be able to digitally connect with JD, Pedro and Willy and their local territory manager through our virtual event platform! You will be able to obtain your favorite Drew Estate cigars and the latest swag from our retail partners, including the fun and education of receiving 25 years of DE knowledge. Find your next event at www.drewestate.com/events or tune in live to a Territory Manager’s Facebook page.

From Sag Harbor, NY, Drew Estate President and Founder Jonathan Drew adds, “My heart deeply aches as we make this announcement. We were truly looking forward to celebrating our 25th anniversary together in Dallas and getting back both to the farms and your stores, together in fellowship, after being away for so long. I imagine that there will be feelings of disappointment and confusion from our consumers around the globe, but just know that your good ole Drew Estate is right by your side, as always, loyal and unwavering. We look forward to being reunited real soon, safely sharing our love of the leaf, together and in person. In the coming weeks, we will begin to provide our loyal DE Family the details of our pivots to upcoming Freestyle Live’s, Freestyle Live: Special Edition, Marquee Events, plus new concepts in virtual store events. Love you guys, be safe. Long Live the Rebirth of Cigars!”

News: Drew Estate Announces Papas Fritas Available Now in 25 Count Boxes

Here’s some news from Drew Estate. Of course, the Papas Fritas are a great little mixed fill cigar, made from the trimmings from the Liga Privadas. They are hard to beat, and not badly priced.

Beginning in August, Drew Estate’s Liga Privada Unico Serie Papas Fritas (115 x 44) cigars will be available in new 25-count boxes, replacing the current 50-count boxes.

Upon its launch in 2012, the quirky Papas Fritas vitola quickly became one of the most beloved and popular offerings in the Liga Privada Unico Serie line. Papas Fritas’ small, handy size made the cigar an excellent choice for cigar lovers who only have a short time to enjoy a rich and savory Liga Privada.

While the packaging will be changing to consumer-friendly 25-count boxes, the uniquely constructed cigars in each box will remain the same Papas Fritas the marketplace has come to love. Featuring Drew Estate’s signature fantail, Papas Fritas delivers the rich and robust complexity of Liga Privada in a short smoke size.

From Sag Harbor, N.Y., Drew Estate’s Founder and President, Jonathan Drew, says, “Papas Fritas punch above their weight class with lots of rich heartiness that grabs your attention from the first pull. These gnarly little knockouts have extraordinary character that makes people crazy, asking ‘How they pack that little beast with so much flavor?’ I feel good about the shift from 50- to 25-count, as it makes it a bit easier for our Liga Freaks to snap up a box all quick and easy, like ‘Don’t worry, Flavor’s vision ain’t blurry.’ That’s Public Enemy by the way.”

Available only to Drew Diplomat Program participants beginning in  August, Papas Fritas will have an MSRP of $143.87/ 25-count box or $5.75/cigar.

News: Punch Aniversario Set For September Launch

More news from General Cigar, or Forged, I can’t keep up with which company has which brands. Either way, Punch was one of the first cigars I bought in quantity, of course it was Punch Rothschilds, probably in maduro.  I would probably get five or six for the cost of a single one of these new Aniversarios, but that was 25 years ago. This sounds like a tasty cigar, I’m looking forward to it!

Since its humble beginnings in 1840 as a cigar created for export to the United Kingdom, Punch has been a stalwart brand that has weathered many storms and withstood the test of time. It has captured the palates and hearts of generations of cigar enthusiasts, most notably discerning American smokers who continually turn to Punch for its expert craftsmanship, indulgent flavor and confident branding.

To commemorate the momentous occasion of the brand’s 180th anniversary, Punch is proud to release its most limited offering to date with “Aniversario,” a spectacular cigar befitting the Punch legacy.

Ed Lahmann, senior brand manager of Punch said, “Perhaps more than any other handmade cigar brand that has graced a tobacconist’s humidor, Punch has been symbolic of a trailblazer, a maverick and one who is unapologetically self-assured in their choices. Today, we celebrate Punch as the first name in Honduran-crafted cigars with this special release. We look forward to upholding the brand’s legacy for today’s Punch loyalists and the next generation of Punch enthusiasts.”

The Punch blending team at the HATSA factory in Danli, Honduras developed the cigar to offer an indulgent, hourlong smoking experience, giving the Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper additional cedar aging to enhance the tobacco and create a deeper, richer profile. The blend features proprietary, hand-selected leaves from the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua and Honduras and a Connecticut Broadleaf binder to create a dimensional, earthy cigar that is equally as indulgent as it is satisfying.

Punch Aniversario will be released exclusively to select brick and mortar retailers in early September and only 3,400 boxes of this commemorative blend have been produced. The cigars are presented in ten-count wooden boxes, handsomely accented with navy and gold.
