IPCPR 2012 – Oliva and Studio Tabac Cigars and a New Shop Visit

After enjoying the heck out of a Cain Daytona No. 4 the other night I figured it was about time to dig into some IPCPR  show samples and see what the deal was with the new Oliva Serie V Melanio Torpedo.  I smoked this cigar during my Thursday evening walk.  Since we moved from a house “in town”, where I could walk to the local convenience store, or around the neighborhood, or a bunch of places, I now live in a more rural area where my walking options are more limited.  As usual, it’s never about the destination, but the journey, so I just walk down the street for a while then turn around and come home to finish my cigar on the deck or back porch.  I’ve been taking my son’s dog along and she loves all the new smells and sights, such as deer and the occasional fox.  Back to the Melanio.  What a beautiful cigar, just about perfect in appearance, 6½” x 52 and nicely box pressed.  The Nicaraguan tobaccos in the blend are largely from Jalapa, which accounts for the bit of sweetness in this very powerful blend.  It’s a pretty great cigar.  I’ve  enjoyed the few Serie V’s I’ve smoked and this one is a really nice addition to the line.

Friday evening I selected a Cain F Maduro that was in the same batch of samples from the trade show. My usual experience with Cain cigars tells me to leave these rest for a year or so to mellow out a little, but in the interest of providing timely information and experiences, I had to smoke this gorgeous robusto.  The cigar was about 5 x 50 with an oily, dark Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper. While this was certainly a powerhouse, it was loaded with deep, dark flavor.  I love the Cain line in general, especially with a little age, and the Daytona is a wonderfully well balanced smoke on the high end of medium, but I sure hope I come across this maduro again.  What a fantastic smoke.

While at the trade show I had the opportunity to sit down with Bryan Scholle, the face of Studio Tabac, and talk about what’s new.  Here’s a little video we took at the show, many thanks to Bryan for taking a few minutes to talk to me.  It was the first time we’d met, and it was like we’d know one another for years.  Bryan is a very cool  guy, if you have a chance to catch him on the Studio Tabac tour, do it.

In Other News

Yesterday I stopped in to the new Total Tobacco shop in Newtown Square, PA, not far from home.  This shop is a part of the Delaware Cigars empire, so Gary Griffith was on hand for the grand opening.  They are still waiting for some displays and fixtures, but the large walk-in humidor is very well stocked with many fine cigars.  I could have gone nuts, but I showed some restraint and only picked up a couple cigars I’ve wanted to try, but haven’t seen locally, notably, a Room 101 OSOK as well as a Cro Magnon EMH.  I’d be shocked if there’s another retailer in the area that has the RoMaCraft Tabac line, but there were all of the CroMagnon sizes as well as Aquataine in Connecticut shade and maduro.  They have a great selection and the prices are in line with the pricing we enjoy in Pennsylvania.  I’ll make a point to stop in from time to time to see how the shop progresses.  One downside is that there’s no smoking in the store, but the selection makes up for that and they have chairs on the sidewalk outside to enjoy a smoke on a nice day.  It’s always nice to see my friend Gary and I wish them the best of luck with this new location.

I’ve gone one quite long enough, that’s all I have for now.  Until the next time,

IPCPR 2012 – Ortega Premium Cigars with Eddie Ortega

After starting off Saturday’s Delaware Cigar Festival with an Ortega Serie D maduro, I decided to fire up the Serie D No.8 natural that was a IPCPR show sample. It’s well documented that I love the Serie D maduro. The San Andreas maduro wrapper on that cigar is stunning and “D”licious and I’ve enjoyed several of the sizes offered. Of course, I was excited to sample the Natural version. The wrapper is an Ecuador Habano Rosado and is quite attractive. It burned wonderfully, but I got the sense that it was still a little young. Six months to a year in the humidor will do wonders for the already very nice smoke. I picked up a couple of these at the Delaware Cigar Festival and kind of regret not grabbing more of them, but there were so many other cigars there I wanted to try!

Here’s a little video from the IPCPR show with Eddie Ortega, one of the many folks in the cigar industry that I’m pleased to call a friend. Every time I see him he asks about my family and life and is just a tremendously cool dude.

I was going to grab a Serie D Maduro tonight, but time got away from me so I grabbed an Cain Daytona No. 4 instead.  I love the Daytona line the best out of the Cain range of cigars, and this corona, along with the rare Lancero are my favorites!  Always well made and tasty!  I grabbed a few of these at the Delaware Cigar Festival also, and couldn’t resist firing one up.

That’s it for now, until the next time,

IPCPR 2012 – E Cigars by Brothers of the Leaf, LLC

We are slowly unpacking and moving things but I think I know where all my cigars and accouterments are.  I know there’s a humidor in the living room and one in the bedroom, and a couple coolerdors in the basement.  My son has his humidor in his room. I do need to find a traveldor for this weekend’s Delaware Cigar Festival, although I may not take a lot of cigars with me. The festival is organized by Gary Griffith of Emilio Cigars fame, and the various vendors have cigars for sale for around $3 each with the proceeds going to charity.  This is a great way to pick up some great smokes for bargain prices and feel good about where the money is going.  It’s not like I need more cigars…I’ll have to exercise some restraint as I don’t want to come home and have to play cigar Tetris in the humidors! Still, if I can get a few Ortega Series D maduros for $3, I will have to do it.

The move has reduced my leisure time a little bit, but last night I sat down with a E from Esencia.  The Esencia line is excellent, but it’s limited in distribution.  The E series will come in at a lower price point and will be available to any retailer who wants to carry them.  Marc and Mike of BOTL, LLC gave me a couple of Corona Gordas when I saw them at the IPCPR show, and I fired one up.  It’s a beautiful cigar, certainly no shortcuts were taken with this cigar. It has a rich, ruddy wrapper and the burn and draw were as close to perfect as I’ve had recently.  Flavor-wise it was solidly medium and pretty darned yummy. It is a sweet and creamy smoke.  This is a cigar that one can smoke in just about any circumstance. As an aside, It’s been getting dark annoyingly early and I realized how much being able to see my cigar as it’s burning adds to the experience.  I turned on the light because I felt like something was missing.  I guess I’m a little bit of a cigar voyeur, but being able to watch a great cigar burn is almost as important to me as the flavor!

I spoke with Marc at the show and he was excited about this new cigar, as well as their new Palio lighter and a stainless steel (and hopefully titanium) Palio cutter that’s really pretty. These guys are passionate about their products and it shows in the quality, and they are super-nice guys as well.  I appreciate them taking the time to talk to me at the show.

That’s about it for now.  Stay tuned for a recap of the Delaware Cigar Festival in Sunday’s regular post and enjoy your week!

IPCPR 2012 – 262 Revere and Paradigm Cigars

I’ve been in the process of moving my family and this weekend was the weekend we chose to rent a truck and move the big stuff.  Long story short, I reserved a 16′ rental truck and they substituted a 24′ diesel for the same price.  Good deal, you say?  I had envisioned backing into my driveway and running everything up a ramp onto a low deck, with this 24′ truck I had to park on the street and use a lift gate.  It’s a wonder I didn’t need a CDL to drive this thing, and I had to go about 5 miles out of my way to get to the house because of the height!  It all worked out in the end and we got all the big stuff moved.  I’m a lot older than I was the last time I moved a piano and all that furniture and we have a lot more stuff yet to move.  Anyway, enough of my complaining, on with the show.

Thursday evening I decided to try the new 262 Cigars Revere that I was given by Clint Aaron at the show.  This is a new cigar that’s due out this fall and is a Nicaraguan Puro.  I really enjoyed this cigar, it burned well and had a decent draw. I can see that some age will benefit this cigar and look forward to smoking it again when it comes out.  It has a little bit of sweetness from the Jalapa wrapper and was pretty full bodied.  Nice cigar.

Today (actually, as I type) after a physically difficult weekend, I lit up a little 262 Paradigm.  This was a short robusto, about 4 x 50ish. I have been late to the party with the 262 lines, this is the first occasion I’ve had to sample them.  Obviously I’ve been missing out, these are fine cigars.  The little Paradigm is tasty and well behaved.  I almost grabbed the Ideology corona, but I needed something with some horsepower.  If I had the opportunity this morning for a cigar I think I would have enjoyed the Ideology with coffee.  This Paradigm is nice and I won’t make the mistake of not smoking these again. Quite satisfying and relaxing.

Here is a video I shot with Clint at the IPCPR show telling us about his new lines.  I had a string of interviewing very tall people when I did this one, so I made sure we talked sitting down so I didn’t feel so short (and I’m 6′ tall)!  The folks at 262 are doing it right, hunt down their cigars and try them if you haven’t already.

That’s all I have for now, it’s time to collapse.  Next Saturday I’ll be attending the Delaware Cigar Festival, so stay tuned for news from that excellent event.

IPCPR 2012 – A Pair of CLE Cigars and Christian Eiroa

Monday was a rainy Labor Day, which is a little depressing for me. I love summer and the end of the season makes me sad. I don’t look forward to autumn or winter very much. Of course the rain didn’t help matters, as my lovely wife and I had tickets to see some dude named Springsteen at Citizens Bank Park in Philly and concerts are less fun when you’re wet. So while we were hanging around waiting to head out, I decided to chose between a cigar and a nap, and the cigar won. I selected a CLE Corojo corona as I hadn’t yet tried Christian Eiroa’s new cigars. I brought these back from Orlando with me, but it’s not what you think, I purchased them at one of the Corona Cigar Co. locations we visited.  I purchased a couple coronas, which are a corona gorda size at 5½ x 46, one of my favorite sizes, and they were reasonably priced at under $6 a stick. If you try the CLE cigars expecting a Camacho, that’s not what you’re in for. This cigar was quite nice, medium bodied with a nice flavor, except for a mineral flavor that didn’t really hit my palate right. Still, perfect construction and burn, and savory flavor. I suspect that flinty mineral flavor could age out after a few months in the humidor. I have another one that I’ll use to test that theory.

The Springsteen show was great, fears of wetness were unfounded as our seats were covered and I had bought 2 ponchos in the parking lot for $5 (cheap insurance!). He put on a heck of a show of  well over 3 hours, hitting all the old favorites as well as some new material. Of course, no smoking in the venue, but I did get a waft of a familiar aroma at one point that reminded me of concerts in the 80s. Funny, if I lit up a cigar I’d get tossed out on my ear, but the stoners are free to enjoy their smoke! I’m 49 and I think I fell somewhere in the middle of the demographic at the show, which I though was funny. This isn’t a concert review blog, so I’ll move on. Tuesday I took my traditional evening walk with a CLE Cuarenta corona. This cigar was an IPCPR trade show sample.  The Cuarenta was Christian’s 40th birthday cigar (young punk!), and it has a Habano wrapper and is a little bit lighter than it’s Corojo sibling. Oddly, I got the same mineral notes in this cigar that I taste in the Corojo. Obviously they share a component. Flinty taste aside, it was still a flavorful smoke and, like the Corojo, worth seeking out and sampling. As I alluded to earlier, I had a chance to sit down with Christian at the show and recorded this video with him talking about all his new ventures.

That’s it for now, until the next time,
