C.Gars Ltd. Cigar Dinner Cruise – Wednesday June 2, 2010

My lovely wife Jenn, myself and friend Karen

Last night we had the good fortune of having been invited on a dinner cruise hosted by our dear friend Mitchell Orchant of C.Gars Ltd.  The cruise was around Manhattan for about 4 hours on the Marco Polo Cruises “Jewel”, which is a 120 foot long ship with a dining room and a covered deck above.  There was a buffet of both Italian and Kosher cuisine that  was delicious and plentiful.  The attendees were a collection of customers, friends and business associates, all smoking non-stop for the duration of the event.

We began the day with my son and I visiting Shaving Grace in Exton, PA for some grooming.  The shop has a big flat panel TV, leather couch, pool and poker tables and various paraphernalia, including cigars, cigar boxes and ashtrays (although smoking is not allowed).  I have never had a professional shave and it was quite a treat to have the hot towels and all the various lotions and lather associated with it.  It’s not something I’d do all the time, but it was a treat.  I’m a little conflicted in that it’s kind of girly, in a very manly way.

Mitchell and Jenn

Shortly after the manscaping trip, we hit the road to NYC.  It typically takes over 2 hours to get from Southeast, PA to NYC so we allowed plenty of time for traffic and construction delays.  We made the Holland Tunnel in 2 hours and found our way to the docks, then found our way to the correct docks!  We were a good hour early but lucky for us Mitchell and his wife Karyn were aboard already with a few other early folks, including George whom we’d met with Mitchell in Vegas a few years ago.  Already we knew people, woohoo!

The vessel eventually filled up and we got under way.  I enjoyed a little Tabak Especial Colada Dulce while we were waiting.  I was pretty much on an empty stomach and wanted something to smoke that wasn’t too challenging.  It was pretty tasty for a flavored cigar.  After we got going I lit up a Hoyo de Tradicion Toro which was also very nice.  In these social situations I generally smoke cigars I don’t have to think about too much.  A great cigar can distract me from a conversation and I don’t want to appear rude.  We spent the evening catching up with old friends we hadn’t seen in a while and meeting new folks. I believe it was Oliva who provided the roller who was demonstrating his craft in the dining room, and all reports are that the cigars he was rolling were very good.

Myself and Mark Aub

One of the gentlemen I had the good fortune of meeting was Marc Aub of Brother of the Leaf, LLC, maker of the Palio cutter and Esencia Cigars.  Marc is an instantly likable fellow.  We talked about the newsgroups and forums, blogs and podcasts, and the state of the industry.  The discussion turned briefly to the IPCPR show and what place we bloggers have there.  I have been to the show once with a retailers badge but with the understanding that the people exhibiting are there to sell their product to retailers.  We made it a point to step back when talking to someone when they had real customers.  Marc suggested that the IPCPR add a membership category for the media, to which my wife made the suggestion of charging an annual fee.  I think this is a great idea, considering any schmoo can have a cigar blog (just look at me!) and get a press pass.   Charging a membership fee makes people think twice and gives the experience some value.

Mitchell "SmokeyMO" Orchant

Marc very generously put an Esencia Lancero in my mouth at one point which was just the perfect cigar to top off a great evening.   From what he said, the lancero isn’t available other than from him or in a special sampler pack that was available on a limited basis.  First, I love the size and feel of a lancero.  It’s elegant, it requires a bit more time and patience to smoke.  This one burned slow and even and was smooth and flavorful down to about 3/4″ when it gave up on me.  It started out with a little zing which I liked.  Marc confirmed what I suspected, that it was a Nicaraguan puro.  I have only heard about these here and there, but all of the good things I’ve heard were confirmed with this very satisfying cigar. On a slightly embarrassing note, it occurred to me moments after I did it that I cut it with my favorite cheapie cutter and not a Palio.  I don’t think Marc noticed (phew!) Unfortunately I didn’t take the time to snap a picture of the cigar, but it was a beauty.

After a terrific evening with a great bunch of folks, the boat docked and we said our thank-yous and farewells to our friends and hosts.  We have been so fortunate to have made such good friends over the years, it’s a treat to be able to hang out with them for a while every so often.  It was also fun to take my son along so that he could experience some of the kinds of events we’ve been attending while he was growing up.  He had a great time as well and is moving along through his cigar education.

Until the next time,

Mid-Week Cigar Recap: Ramon Allones, Deisel – Wednesday June 2, 2010

Monday was Memorial Day, a special occasion which called for a special cigar.  I went to the “special” humidor and selected a Ramon Allones 8-9-8 that had been in there for 5 years or so.  After doing a bit of research on it, I found that this lonsdale size cigar had been discontinued since sometime around 2003.  I figured it had been in my possession long enough and was ready to go.  I wasn’t disappointed with it as it was a delicious cigar which just delighted my taste buds for a good hour or so.   It wasn’t the prettiest cigar in the world, it was a little lumpy in places, but it was just about everything I like about cigars from this particular geographic location.  There is a flavor, or a “twang” if you will, that I can’t put a name to that seems to be a characteristic that was present in this cigar.  I wish I had the ability to better describe this fairly rare vitola, other than it was a special cigar that I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to spend an afternoon with.

After a dinner which featured jalepeños stuffed with macaroni and cheese (HOT!), I fired up a Deisel Unholy Cocktail,   which I’ve spoken about here before.  This was another great cigar, for far different reasons than the Ramon Allones.  It had enough flavor to get past the damage done by the peppers and a great burn.  This was my last one of these and I will need to grab some more the next time I see them.  For a $4 cigar ($3.33 each by the box) these are just dandy!  Pennsylvania broad leaf goodness down to the last inch. The only downside to me is the name, I think “Deisel” does this cigar a disservice, but that’s just my opinion and won’t stop me from enjoying them.

This evening (Wednesday) I will have the distinct honor and pleasure of attending a dinner cruise and herf in New York City at the invitation of a dear old friend.  I expect to have a lot to report from this event, and will try to tweet (@cigarcraig on Twitter) over the course of the evening.   I’ve been really looking forward to this event and am grateful for the invitation.  More on this in my next post.

Speaking of herf, as I was listening to the latest Dogwatch Cigar Radio episode, they started out with a question about the word herf and where it originated.  One of the more frequently visited posts on my old blog is the explanation of where the term originated.  I’ve been contemplating re-posting it here on the new blog, but in the mean time it will always be at http://cigarcraig.wordpress.com/2009/09/29/the-origin-of-the-word-herf/ .

Don’t forget to enter to win some cool Joya de Nicaragua stuff!  There will be 2 winners this time so get your comment in to enter.  Deadline is Saturday, June 5th.  If everyone cooperates I’ll have a video to post with the selections on Sunday the 6th.

Drew Estate Cigar Week: Tabak Especial and Joya de Nicaragua Antaño – Sunday May 30, 2010

Thursday evening my son and I went up the road to Light’n Up Cigars for a Drew Estate event.  We were greeted by Ed, the new area rep for DE, who helped my son pick out a selection of cigars.  I picked up a few of the Tabak Especial Coladas in both the Negra and Dolce (Maduro and Shade) wrappers and lit up the Maduro Robusto which was the cigar that I got free with the purchase.  Quite a while ago I had gotten several tins of Mayorga Coffee infused cigars with a purchase of the regular Mayorga cigars.   I enjoyed these as a change of pace for quite a while and the Tabak Especial reminds me of those.  It’s a really well made cigar and you can tell the tobacco is the highest quality.  They are sweet without being too sweet.  I don’t particularly care for flavored cigars, but these are a nice change of pace, not something I’d buy a box of perhaps, but nice to smoke now and then.  If you want to receive an e-mail letting you know when and where to find a Drew Estate event in your area, there is a form on their page for you to subscribe.

A word about the shop, Light’n Up Cigars in Glenmoore, PA.  This is one of a chain of five stores in the Philadelphia area.  The store consisted of an outer shop with accessories and pipes and whatnot and a lounge with a couch, some chairs, and a TV.  There is also a large walk-in humidor with a decent selection of cigars.  The staff that night consisted of the owner and another gentleman, both of whom seemed quite knowledgeable.  I’ve been less than impressed with these stores in the past, but this experience makes me inclined to give them a second chance.  The last couple times I’ve visited I was looking for some budget priced cigars and their selection in that area was very limited.

Last night I had a Joya de Nicaragua Antaño Robusto Grande which was just delicious.  It was lush and full flavored and really satisfying.  This is one of the cigars in the sampler that is one of the prizes in the current contest (leave a comment on my last post to enter), well, not one of the exact cigars, the winner will receive a complete five cigar sampler.  This particular example came from the herf in Reno I attended last November.  These cigar burn like I expect a premium cigar to burn, nice and even with a solid ash.  The draw was a little tighter than I would like, but not so much that it distracted from the flavor.  It’s a Nicaraguan puro with a beautiful oily wrapper which I would stock in my humidor in a heartbeat.

It’s Memorial Day weekend, the unofficial  start of summer, and a time to say thanks for all of the fine people who gave their lives so what we can enjoy the freedoms that we enjoy today.

I’m going to head outside with a Chateau Real Maduro Gran Cru Perfecto on this beautiful evening.  Enjoy the holiday and be careful out there!

Until the next time,

CigarCraig

Saturday’s Cigar Adventure – February 13, 2010

Welcome to the new home of the CigarCraig.com Blog!

Last night I took a trip up to Bethlehem, PA to the Cigars International Super Store where they were having an event featuring Sam Leccia. My friend Kyle, a former co-worker who used to join me for cigars at lunch on Fridays back in the mid-1990s came along with me. Sam is famous for his Nub and Cain cigars and was there doing some amazing cigar wrapping demonstration.   I was amazed that he was cutting little pieces of various shades of leaf with his chaveta, and carefully applying them to the cigar.  He then proceeded to make a pipe, but not just a cigar with a right angle bend in it, but with a bowl! It was amazing.  Much to my surprise and delight, Sam presented me with one of these special cigars I’d watched him create!  This cigar will occupy a special place in my humidor! Thank you Sam!

I picked up a couple of the Cain F, as well as a Habano and a Maduro and proceeded to light the Cain Maduro while watching Sam work his magic. The Cain Maduro 550 I smoked was a powerhouse!  The San Andreas wrapper was quite tasty and if I hadn’t taken my time it may have gotten the better of me!  It turned out to be a very nice evening.

I’ve decided to take the plunge into the world of Twitter.  I can be found at http://www.twitter.com/cigarcraig.  I have this blog set up to auto-tweet when a new article is posted, so follow me and I’ll try to tweet some interesting things from time to time.

It’s Valentines Day as I write this and my beautiful bride of 22 years surprised me with a 3 pack of CAO samplers!

Now on to the moment you’ve all been waiting for: the selection of the winner of the Drew Estate Cutter!  As a side note, I am looking forward to receiving a package from John Brooke, the new PR/Media guy at Drew Estate, with some goodies from Steve Saka for future give-aways!  There will be some SWEET stuff in the coming months!  Major Thank-Yous to the folks at Drew Estate for their support!  This month’s featured feline is Max.  While Max didn’t exactly lay down on the winner, I think he was pretty clear who the winner was.
