An Exceptionally Good Saturday: A Celebration Cigar with Guillermo Leon and a contest!

Yesterday was a fantastic day.  It kind of began Friday evening with a call from our daughter that her water had broke (it’s VERY important to know at this point that she was pregnant at the time, but not due for a couple weeks).  We received a text message at 3:30 yesterday morning that she has delivered a 6 pound, 13 oz baby girl, much to our delight.  Naturally, there’s no getting back to sleep after receiving such news!  We were at the birth center before 7 to meet our first grandchild.  We spent a couple hours admiring the child and left them alone to get their new parent training.  They were in a “birth center” that was very small, not really conducive to visitors, and very busy.  Under normal circumstances they would be sent home twelve hours after delivery!  Crazy stuff.  So we went about our business running usual Saturday errands. “Pop” and “Tynnie” are very proud grandparents!

After lunch I took a ride down to The Wooden Indian in Havertown, PA (coincidentally where my daughter and son-in-law live).  They were having a La Aurora event with a longest ash contest (in which I didn’t participate), hosted by Guillermo Leon, as well as Chris Lenzo of Miami Cigar & Co.  Another point relevant to this story: Our daughter’s name is Aurora, and the first box of premium cigars I purchased were LA Aurora Bristol Especiales back in 1996.  So with the intention of smoking a celebratory cigar, and meeting Señor Leon, I picked up a La Aurora 107 Lancero and a Guillermo Leon Signature Corona Gorda and got to work celebrating.  I expected a large crowd.  Previous events I’ve attended at the store have been packed. I wish the event had drawn a bigger crowd, but it was much more comfortable and I was fortunate to have the opportunity to hang out with Guillermo and really get to chat with him.  Such a gentleman, very easy to talk to and really embraces the “new media”.  Of course, I had to smoke the Signature Corona Gorda that he handed me, and it was a dynamite cigar.  Very smooth and flavorful. He told me that it has two binders, one of which is Cameroon which definitely comes through midway through the cigar.  Very complex and interesting, and ideal cigar to celebrate the day.  Havertown is about 45 minutes from Downingtown, and the ride home was wonderful.

When I got home I watched the last period of game one of the NHL Eastern  Conference Semifinals in which the Flyers lost badly.  Besides that it was a great day.  My wife and I then went shopping for baby girl stuff and went back to the hospital to visit baby and parents, who had been checked in as a precaution and are going home today.

I’m often asked what this blog is about, and I tell them it’s about what I’m doing when I smoke a cigar, and why I like the cigar I’m smoking.  I am not a good technical reviewer, there are plenty of them, (CasasFumando.com and Stogiereview.com come to mind immediately.  BTW, many thanks to Tony at CasasFumando, I recently won a pair of Para Japón cigars by La Aurora from him!) see the sites in the  left hand sidebar for some of my favorites,  so I don’t feel the need to compete.  I simply relate the things I’m doing, some my be exciting, some may be mundane, but it’s my way of enjoying cigars!

In my estimation, the recent turn of events calls for a contest!  I have another 5 pack of La Gloria Cubana Serie N JSB cigars, generously provided by the fine folks at General Cigar Leave a comment with your guess of my new grand daughter’s name to enter. Just leave a comment.  In the moments after publishing this article, my daughter and her husband settled on the name Willow, so guessing it would be very easy.  I’ll select a winner randomly.  Contest rules can be found on the Winner and Rules page.  Keep in mind that I don’t know the baby’s name at the time of writing!  She was a couple weeks early and the kids hadn’t decided yet!!  Honestly I’ll accept any comment as an entry, just trying to make it a little interesting, guessing baby names isn’t exactly a guy thing, is it? I’ll pick a winner next weekend sometime (it’s Mother’s Day, don’t forget!)

Anyway, I’m trying to decide between the enormous La Aurora Puro Vintage 2003 or the 107 Lancero for today’s walk, or there’s a really old Perferido someplace, or even a Bristol Especiales that’s probably 10 years old….

Until the next time,

CigarCraig

Wednesday Cigar Recap: Maria Mancini, Rocky Patel, StogieBoys.com and a Contest!

Seems like it’s been a busy week so far!  This post is going to be a little scattered, so please bear with me!  The good news is that the weather in south-east PA is getting more and more Spring-like, which means that it may be warm and sunny one minute and cold and rainy the next! I’ve smoked a few cigars so far this week, and had some other random cigar experiences.

The other night I took a Maria Mancini Magic Mountain for a walk.  This is one of my go-to cigars, one I grab when I want a good, familiar cigar that I don’t have to think about too much.  It’s a 6″ x 54 square presses torpedo that is a blend of Honduran and Nicaraguan tobacco that I believe is made by the Placencias in Honduras.  I rarely have had a bad cigar from this line and they always satisfy me.  The fact that they are so inexpensive is a major bonus.

This evening I went to Old Havana Cigar Co. in West Chester, PA to a Rocky Patel event.  Rocky was there, along with Mark, the local sales rep, as well as Alan Price, our local CRA ambassador and rep for a couple new lines.  I picked up an Edge Missile maduro and wandered into the lounge.  One odd thing that happened was that I heard my name from across the room and it turned out to be a dude I went to elementary school with.  I couldn’t believe he recognized me,  since elementary school was a LONG time ago.  It was nice to catch up with him over a cigar.  The shop there was very busy, it can get pretty raucous there.  I’ve only really gone to events at this particular store, and it always seems to be a big party going on.  Terrific if you’re into that sort of thing, I like a quieter environment personally.  Anyway, I got to talk to Rocky for a bit, as well as Alan, whom I’ve met several times.  I watched a little of the Flyers/Sabres game and then called it a night.  I enjoyed the Edge quite a bit, I don’t smoke a great deal of Rocky Patel cigars, and I honestly don’t know why, I generally enjoy them when I do.  It was full of flavor and constructed perfectly.

A week or two ago I purchased a Groupon for Stogieboys.com, ya know, when your wife and daughter both e-mail you a Groupon deal, you better jump on it.  Sometime in the near future I will make a $40 or so purchase which I only paid $20 for!  I’m sure I can find something.  Anyway, I e-mailed the site with a question, and received a reply from Paul Eusanio, one of the principles of the company.  I ended up having a nice phone conversation with Paul, who told me about the company.  They appear to have a pretty good selection and their pricing seems competitive.   He also offered me a discount code to pass on to you, my loyal readers.

Head on over to http://www.stogieboys.com and have a look.  Paul also provided me with some of their Stogie Register Cigar Journals to give away, so leave a comment and I’ll select a random bunch of people to send these to.  I’ll announce how many when I announce the winners sometime on Sunday, April 24, 2011.  These will be mailed via USPS media mail because I ain’t made of money ya know!

That’s enough for now, I have a lot of exciting things coming up in the near future so stay tuned!

Until the next time,

CigarCraig

La Gloria Cubana Serie N Day on Friday March 25, 2011

In 1996 I had my first La Gloria Cubana cigar.  Soon after they opened the factory in the Dominican Republic and the buzz online was which were better, the cigars made in the DR, or the ones made in Miami?  I never could tell the difference myself, but I’ve had dozens of La Glorias over the year. I think the first cigar that made me feel a little queezy was a Corona Gorda natural back in the late 90s.  Of course, much has changed, however the cigars are still delicious, and the variety available has increased.  I’ve recently enjoyed the Artesanos de Tabaqueros as well as the Serie N, which is a beautiful cigar, dark and oily and full of flavor.

Friday, March 25 we celebrate Serie N Day with a webcast taking place at http://www.lagloriacigars.com/ starting at 6 PM EDT. There will be an opportunity to interact with Michael Giannini, Yuri Guillen and Rick Rodriguez via Twitter (@lagloriacigars) and Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/teamlagloria) and there will be retailers across the country participating. The press release can be viewed here.   I will be making an appearance in the 7 o’clock (EDT) hour.

In celebration of this event, I will be giving away five 5 packs of Serie N JSBs, generously provided by General Cigar.  Watch for the first contest this weekend, and then subsequent contests every week following!  The rules will be simple, leave a comment and I’ll have a random drawing mid week and announce a winner.

That’s all for now, check back for the first contest announcement!

Wooden Indian Drew Estate Cigar Event, a Joya de Nicaragua and a Chateau Real

Saturday I took a drive with my friend Kyle down to the Wooden Indian Tobacco Store in Havertown, PA for a Drew Estate Event.  This store has one of the only Liga Privada branded lounges in the country and has a very nicely stocked humidor.  The new location is much more comfortable than their old one, which was very small and located tucked into an odd corner in a large strip center.  The store is now, quite wisely I think, located right next door to the Havertown Fire Company.  Marvin Samel, co-owner of Drew Estate, Dave Lafferty, Regional Sales manager, and the local rep, Kevin McCormack were there, as well as Alan Price, our local Cigar Rights of America Ambassador.  I was very fortunate to be able to get some much needed advice on traveling to Nicaragua in the coming weeks from Marvin and Dave, as well as a couple that just made the trip in the last few weeks.  I picked up a couple of Joya de Nicaragua Cabinetta Robustos that I enjoy quite a bit, and suggested the same for Kyle.  I kind of pride myself on being able to recommend a cigar that I think someone my enjoy, I’m sure all of us cigar nuts can do that to some extent, and Kyle really enjoyed the cigar.  I really like these myself, they are a nice, smooth, good tasting cigar that’s made very well.  The dos capos presentation is interesting and eye-catching, but I don’t really think it adds too much to the flavor of the cigar as far as I’m concerned.  I smoke this one well past the transition to the maduro wrapper.  It was a nice afternoon hanging out with the Drew Estate guys and an old friend who I don’t see very often (but lives within spitting distance of me).

Going a little out of order this time.  Friday evening my wife wanted a cup of decaf coffee from Wawa, which for those in other parts of the county is a very popular convenience store that has pretty good coffee. I grabbed a Chateau Real Gran Cru Perfecto and took a walk.  The closest Wawa is about a mile and a half away, so that’s a three mile walk with a great cigar.  I have really been enjoying these cigars since getting a box over a year ago.  They are perfectly made, have a great cocoa/coffee flavor and at 6″ x 54 fit the walk nicely.  The dark San Andreas wrapper is beautiful and tasty.  I have some questions about these for the factory when I visit.  I’ve smoked a bunch of these as well as the Small Clubs and really enjoy them.  I’m afraid the coffee wasn’t as hot as it could have been by the time I got home (temps were probably in the 40s), but I warned against that going into this, but it was a great walk with a wonderful cigar.

That’s all I have this time, I hope to have another update from Tommy for Wednesday so stay tuned.

Until the next time,

CigarCraig

Weekend Cigar: Xikar HC Habana Colorado – Sunday December 12, 2010

As the holiday season is in full swing, the opportunities to have a cigar become few and far between. Between the weather and the season it’s been busy in a non-cigar way.   Friday evening provided an opportunity for my son and I to attend a Xikar event at Old Havana Cigar Co. outside of West Chester, PA.  I had not tried the HC cigars prior and it seemed like a good time.  I picked up one of each of the robustos, a Connecticut, a Criollo and a Habana Colorado.  For purchasing three, I got one free, so I went with the Habana Colorado and smoked it there.  We all know that I’m not exactly a free spender when it comes to cigars, so it will surprise nobody to hear me say that I think the $8.25 price tag for these is too high, even with the free cigar I had some buyers remorse.  That’s not to say that the Habano Colorado wasn’t a fine cigar, it was, I just didn’t find it $8.25 good.  There are a lot of cigars that are just as good for less. Anyway, the cigar burned very well and lasted well over an hour, and was smooth and flavorful, and on the stronger side of medium.  I am looking forward to smoking the others in the near future, as they are well made and nicely blended cigars, but I don’t think I would purchase them again.  As far as the shop goes, the lounge is spacious and comfortable and the humidor was very well stocked.  It’s a little out of my way so I don’t get to this shop often, and only really ever go there when there’s an event that interests me.  I prefer JM Cigars in Exton,  PA as far as price, selection and friendliness, I just wish Jeff would have more manufacture events.

Don’t forget to enter the current contest, win some Joya de Nicaragua cigars and stuff.   Deadline for entry is close of business Saturday, December 18 (midnight).  Also, the folks at Thompson have some deals going on that they asked me to pass on, see http://www.thompsoncigarcoupons.com/ for more information.

Until the next time,

CigarCraig
