A Cigar Shop Visit, a Cain, a Perla del Mar, a Rodrigo and a La Gloria Cubana

Sunday I decided to go hang out at one of my locals shops that I’ve been to a few times and had mixed feelings about, Light’n Up Premier Smokeshop in Ludwigs Corner, PA. This shop is about 5 miles from home and I pass it on my commute every day. In the past I’ve had less than competent service, and limited selection. This visit, along with my last, was better and I want to give another chance. I spent a few minutes browsing the humidor and found the selection to be adequate although sparse. There were numerous empty boxes on the shelves which I suppose is excusable in the off season, but not something I like seeing, especially when it’s something that interests me. I would have picked up a couple more of the Padilla Reserva Maduros if they had them, but they did not. I ended up picking up a Cain Daytona torpedo and smoking it in the shop while talking with Rudy, the gentleman working in the shop, and several of the patrons who came in for a smoke. I think there was a football game on the TV too. I also picked up a couple other cigars I wanted to try as well. The Cain Daytona Torpedo was an excellent smoke, I like all of the Cain cigars, but I think the smoothness of the Daytonas makes it my favorite. It doesn’t pack quite the punch that the rest of the line does. I spent about 2 hours at the shop and the worst thing I can say about this visit is that they close at 4 pm on Sundays, not that I would have hung out longer on this particular occasion, but it would be nice if they were open a little later.

Perla del Mar_3x56After dinner I took the dog for a walk with one of the other cigars I picked up at the shop, a Perla del Mar 3¾x56 stubby, fat little robusto. I have a sample from the trade show floating around someplace in the depths of the humidor, but I was too lazy to fish it out and figured the shorter size would be better for a damp and dreary evening. By the way, don’t visit the website with a full bladder, just a bit of friendly advice. This cigar is from J.C. Newman and is made in the same factory as the Brickhouse and El Baton in Nicaragua. It’s a Nicaraguan blend with an Ecuador Connecticut wrapper. I found it to be a pleasant smoke, medium bodied and flavorful and well behaved. It’s a good, well priced cigar. Personally, I’d love to see a Brickhouse maduro in the same size.

Rodrigo_Fortaleza_AbsolutoMonday’s evening smoke was a Rodrigo Forteleza Absoluto, a sample I received from Gary at Emilio Cigars, the distributor for Rodrigo Cigars. George Rodriguez had sent me samples of his original line a while back and I really dug the lancero over the larger ring gauges, so, I was looking forward to smoking this pretty little pigtail capped corona (5 ⅛” x 43). It started out pretty bold, and continued to be a full bodied, full flavored smoke. This is a very nice cigar! I can understand why this had such critical acclaim. I found it to be quite a satisfying smoke. I’ll try this in a larger ring gauge one of these days when I run across them in a shop someplace.

Tuesday I was having a little trouble deciding what to smoke, so I went with an old friend, the La Gloria Cubana Retro Especiale Club. This is a cigar that I’velgc_artesanos_retro smoked quite a few of, and 5¾“ x 47 is a really nice size for me. It’s a different cigar than what I generally gravitate toward, it’s bright and mellow as opposed to dark and spicy, but it provides me with a nice change and the cigar is interesting enough to keep my attention, but not particularly challenging to smoke. Once in awhile I just want to smoke a cigar without thinking about it too much and the Retro Especiale is one like that. This isn’t a knock on the cigar, quite the opposite. I’ve always enjoyed the La Gloria Cubana line and have some of the new Trunk Show samples to smoke, but they are just enormous! Too large for winter smoking. I also continue to beat myself up for not picking up the Rabito de Cochino 3 pack when I saw it at Cigars International on my last visit. That’s a cigar I’ve wanted to try and I can’t believe I didn’t grab one. I will, no doubt, smoke more Retros this summer.

I received an email today about a new product and I’d be curious to know what you think of it? I’m far too impatient to use matches to light my cigars, but this is a pretty slick match case/striker combo that could be a great gift item for the cigar smoke who has everything, and I’m told the target MSRP will be around $8, so it’s priced right. Check it out at http://www.quirky.com/products/215-Strike-new-match.

That’s it for now, until the next time,

A New Cigar App from Cigar Dojo

Check out this press release I received from the folks at CigarDojo.com. I don’t usually post press releases, but I started playing with the app a little bit on my iPod Touch and I think it might be pretty cool.  I initially found a couple inaccuracies and omissions in the “Shops” and “Places” sections, but this is brand new and these little things will be corrected, I’m sure.  It’s a really sharp and friendly interface  even for an old dude like me!

PRESS RELEASE: CigarDojo.com Releases the CigarDojo Social Cigar App

Lakewood, Colorado – November 1st, 2011 CigarDojo the Social Cigar App is available for both iPhone as well as Android devices in the iTunes and Google Play stores. The CigarDojo Social Cigar app is a free smartphone app that is designed for cigar smokers to socialize and share their thoughts and images of the the cigars they are smoking.

“Cigar smoking is a highly social hobby and we knew that none of the existing cigar apps were very social in nature therefore the CigarDojo Social Cigar App was born.” said Eric Guttormson CEO of CigarDojo.com. “Cigar smokers communicate on Twitter and Facebook which is great but there is so much distraction on those social media tools we knew cigar smokers would love to have a place of their own.”

Users of the app can create an account in seconds or merely login with their existing Twitter or Facebook account. Users can also send their status updates from the Dojo out to both Twitter and Facebook therefore there is no need to duplicate efforts. “The Dojo is like a world-wide HERF. Wherever you are smoking you always have the Dojo in your pocket and the vibrant Dojo community is always ready to comment on what you might be smoking.” In the first month of release the Dojo app has already had over 1,000 downloads and the growth shows no sign of slowing down.

The Dojo is a fun place to relax, smoke, and share.

“The thing that separates the Dojo app from other cigar apps is the awesome group of people that participate. We have personalities of all types on the app and everyone is positive and supportive.” And the Dojo gives back. The Great Cigar Giveaway allows users to enter to win cigars from companies such as My Father, Arturo Fuente, AJ Fernandez, Espinosa Cigars, Eddie Ortega, Rocky Patel, Drew Estate, and others. “The giveaways are our way of showing our cigar community how much we appreciate their fellowship.” Giveaways stated in October and will run deep into December 2012. “Hopefully we can find more great partners and keep these giveaways going forever. Abe from SmokeInn.com, and Jorge at Stogies World Class Cigars in Houston were instrumental in helping us get the Great Cigar Giveaway off the ground.”

The Dojo app also features a really slick cigar shop and cigar bar locator where you can “checkin” while you are at your favorite location or even add your own location to the app. Of course the app also features the Dojo’s famous cigar reviews and a cigar event calendar but there is no doubt the focus of the app is the fellowship and the social HERF aspect of the app. Eric says “We have only just begun with this app. It’s our goal to be the number one cigar app in the world and we have all sorts of plans to add new features to our app. Our app is free so please download it and say hi to our ever growing community of cigar smokers.”

The CigarDojo App is free and can be downloaded…

For the iPhone in the iTunes store:

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/cigardojo-social-cigar-app/id555309816?mt=8

For Android devices in the Google Play store:

And a Web app version for any other type of mobile phone:

http://m.cigardojo.com/

Full feature list can be viewed at http://cigardojo.com/app

Give the CigarDojo app a try, it’s free and looks like a lot of fun. In other news, last night I took a walk with a Thunder by Nimmish from Rocky Patel,  I’ve enjoyed this cigar in the past, it’s well made and tastes great.  It’s not super strong, but you know it’s there for sure.  Nice smoke.

That’s it for now, don’t forget to adjust your clocks if your area requires it.  I dislike Standard Time, it gets dark really early from now until spring, and I like my daylight!  In other news, I’ve started putting together this year’s “12 Days of Spectacular Giveaways” and it’s safe to say that this year will blow last year away!  Early response has been fantastic!

That’s it for now, Until the next time,

A Xikar Executive Lighter and A Little of This and a Little of That

When we left off on Sunday, I had a cold coming on, and it came on in full force that day, but the worst of it passed quickly.  I still didn’t really feel like smoking too many cigars, so I’m left with not a lot to talk about today.  So I figured it would be a good enough time to showcase a piece of equipment I’ve been using lately, a red Xikar Executive lighter.

I won this lighter at an event at the Wooden Indian a few months ago and have used it pretty regularly with generally good results.  The single jet flame is more than adequate to light and touch up a cigar, it has plenty of horsepower and even works OK in a light breeze.  It seems to run through fuel pretty quickly, but many jet flame lighters do, but I find myself filling this one more than other lighters.  I’m going to guess that this is an old model, it looks like the Executive II has replaced it and has a fuel window, which is a welcome improvement.  Another little thing I’ve noticed is that it’s finish is already starting to chip, and I’ve been VERY careful with this lighter.  I make sure to put it in it’s own pocket in my pants, and don’t throw it in the drawer with other things.  It’s still gotten a couple chips, but the important thing is that it works well to light a cigar. If I have occasion to need a fancy lighter, I’ll just pull out the gold Dupont….I can’t even finish the sentence…I don’t have a gold Dupont lighter….wouldn’t know what to do with one if I did!  I bet they don’t do any better job of lighting a cigar.  As an aside, a few years back I was in Vegas and stopped into the Gold and Silver Pawn Shop of Pawn Stars fame, and they had a Punch Dupont lighter.  It had a $3000 price tag on it, but they would have let me have it for $2500.  For that kind of money it better have MY name on it!  Anyway, I like the Xikar lighter, it’s been reliable and easier to put in my pocket than my other favorite lighter (see my post about that lighter).  This review was not solicited by Xikar, I won this as an event attendee, I bought some cigars and got a raffle ticket!

Speaking of Punch, head on over to http://www.punchcigars.com/tailgating/ and sign up to win a cool six-pack of Punch cigars. They are giving one away every day until December 28, 2012.  I saw these at the IPCPR show and it is a really neat presentation. It comes with an assortment of Punch cigars, a cutter and a bottle opener.  It’s a very cool piece, go try to win one or pick one up if you see it in your local shop!

On a sad note, we lost one of our feline family members last night.  Frank was a good companion for the last 16 years and was never too far from my lap whether I was on the porch enjoying a cigar, or on the couch watching TV.  He even made a few cameo appearances in my CAO Last Stick Standing video.  He was pretty straight laced, when the other cats were rolling around in the catnip, he would have nothing to do with it.  But he did seem to like sitting on my lap while I smoked.  He had a good, long life and we will miss him.

That’s it for today, until the next time,

Accessory/Website Review, Flor de Gonzales, San Lotano, KMA, Alec Bradley and Partagas

Last week I received an e-mail from CigarBargains.com about a Combo Cigar Cutter/Knife w/ Belt/Money Clip.  CigarBargains.com is a site run by CheapHumidors.com which allows one to negotiate with “Suzy” and work the price down.  I thought it would be a neat experiment and always kinda wanted a knife like this, knowing full well it would be crap for properly cutting a cigar (more on that later).  I buy stuff for a living, Buyer is actually my job title, so I know how this works.  I start out looking at the shipping and deciding how much I’m willing to pay. In this case, the farther under $10 the better.  Their starting offer for this item was $10.99, so my opening offer was $3.  “Suzy” replied with “I might have peed myself a little at your offer of $3.50. You need to be closer to $9.68.”.  This went on for a while, with various comments about needing a new purse, feeding the kids and such.  When all was said and done, I ended up getting this for $9.05 delivered, which met my requirements.  Shipping from Florida was reasonably quick as I received it on  Thursday after completing the transaction last Friday.  As anticipated, the knife does a reasonably good job of mangling a cigar, I had the strangest cut, but I have to admit it cut cleanly and I ended up having an excellent smoking experience.  I think it would work better using the blade to make a V cut, or, and I haven’t tried this yet, putting the cigar in the hole, putting the blade up to the cigar with a little pressure, and rotating the cigar, then pealing off the cap.  It was a worthwhile experiment, and there are some decent deals to be had with enough patience to follow through with the negotiating.

The cigar I cut with the new knife was a Flor de Gonzales 90 Miles Robusto, the last of a 5 pack I won well over 2 years ago.  I’ve enjoyed smoking these cigars, the construction was flawless and the flavors agreeable.  The poor cut, while offensive to my CDO (OCD in alphabetical order as it should be)  addled brain, was not a factor and didn’t take away from the experience.  It was a smooth, flavorful medium bodied smoke which I enjoyed to the fullest. The two years or so of age didn’t hurt this cigar either.

Friday evening calls for a little bit of a special cigar, so I selected a San Lotano Habano Lancero for my evening walk.  I had picked this up at a San Lotano event at Olde World Tobacco in Lancaster, PA several months ago.  This is a beautiful 7″ x 38 lancero, with a nice little pigtail cap.  I went back to my regular cutter for this one, no reason to risk mangling this cigar.  Burn was perfect.  I love it when a cigar burns with a nice flat ember, not pointy, all the tobaccos burning at exactly the same rate.  It’s a miracle that this can be accomplished and I always appreciate it it when I see it.  AJ Fernandez makes some terrific cigars, this was no different.  I love the lancero format.

Saturday morning I had the great pleasure of being the guest on Kiss My Ash Radio‘s Bloggers Corner segment.  I was nervous as hell, and there were some things I planned on mentioning but missed. Fortunately, Abe had done a piece on pairing root beers with cigars, which I’ve been doing for years.  I wanted to suggest Victory Brewery‘s root beer, as it is exceptional and made right here in my home town.  I even had notes and in my nervousness I didn’t look at them!  Oh well, I hope I didn’t make too much of a fool of myself, I appreciate being invited on the show.   Saturday afternoon I stopped by JM Cigars in Exton, PA to say hello to Jon Lipson, the Alec Bradley rep, who was having an event there.  I picked up a few American Classic Blends in Corona and Robusto and smoked a Corona while catching up with Jon and the folks at the shop.  For an absolutely stunning day I was surprised at the traffic in the store.  I guess I figure people have better things to do on a stunning Saturday, I know I did.  I enjoyed the American Classic Corona very much and went home to change the oil in the scooter and mow the lawn.

To finish up the day I fired up a Partagas 1845 Gigante that I received in a sample pack from General Cigar.  It’s a 6 x 60 that feels much bigger for some reason.  I took my son’s dog for a nice walk and enjoyed the heck out of this cigar. So far I think I liked the Robusto better, but this monster was very good, burned well and lasted for quite a while.  So far I’m impressed by this line, although I really can’t think of a Partagas cigar I really haven’t enjoyed, General Cigar Co. or otherwise.  Dirty little secret: Havana Partagas Presidente is one of my all time favorite cigars.  Give the Partagas 1845 a try, it’s a very tasty smoke.

I’m off today to Whippany, NJ to meet up with ACigarSmoker.com‘s Peter Glad at JR Cigars‘ store and lounge.  It’s always fun going to the store there and having a nice lunch and cigars, and I’m looking forward to meeting Peter.  Of course, stop on by if you’re in the area and say hello and join us for a smoke!

Until the next time,

CigarCraig

Cigar Recap: Oja, Cohiba, La Palina and Perdomo

It’s the middle of the week, and I’m getting ready to take a cigar journey this weekend.  I have to start packing cigars (and a few changes of clothes) for my journey, hence my travel humidor post.  I’ve smoked a few cigars since my last post, so here’s a quick recap.

I was taking some pictures for the traveldor post and I was careless with an Oja Mestizo Artefacto and it rolled off the table and it suffered a little damage from the fall.  I really hate that, so I burned the evidence.  This is a 6 x 60 Habano wrapped cigar from my newest site sponsor, Oja Cigars.  I’ve really enjoyed this line and the Habano is my favorite of the line, with the exception of the anniversary.  It’s big in size and flavor, it’s got a little sweetness that I enjoy and is really nicely made.  Keep an eye out for these, they are appearing in more and more shops.  There’s something for everyone unless you like mild cigars, because even the Connecticut is on the full bodied side.

Sunday afternoon was absolutely beautiful, and I selected something a little special to celebrate Columbus Day.  I was surprised when I picked up a Cohiba Siglo VI from the “good” humidor.  It was very light in weight,  I expected it to be a little heftier.  This cigar was probably 6 or 7 years old and seemed like a fitting tribute to the man who discovered cigars.  I punched it, considering how light it was in the hand, I thought it would have a really loose draw. It worked well with the punch for a while, but I ended up cutting it after while because I wasn’t getting the draw that I liked.  It was a good cigar, certainly not one I’d go out of my way for, but it was good.  It had that familiar and enjoyable Cuban “twang” that I look for and it burned in a typical ragged fashion.  It reminded me that some of the best cigars on the planet are coming out of places that aren’t Cuba, although there is a flavor in Cuban cigars that just isn’t found in cigars from other places.

Monday came around and I reached for a La Palina El Diario rebusto which was another sample from Bill Paley at the IPCPR show.  This robusto was perfectly made and really hit the spot.  It burned far longer than I anticipated, running well over 90 minutes.  I actually ended up with a Cain-like queasiness afterward.  I was surprised by this as this isn’t typically a heavy hitter, and it snuck up on me.  I will have to continue research on this phenomenon.  These are great cigars, just a little too pricey for me to smoke too often.

Last night’s cigar was one I had been looking forward to trying.  I had purchased this Perdomo Reserve Champagne a while back and had picked it up a few times, only to end up picking out something else.  The yellow cello is pretty striking on this, giving it that ten-years-in-the-humidor look.  The cigar had a beautiful Ecuador Connecticut wrapper that was without flaw.  The band is enormous.  Let me take a little detour here and say that I have smoked quite a few Perdomo cigars in my time, and the ones that I’ve liked have been on the low end of the price spectrum, the higher end cigars don’t do it for me, but throw a $3  Fresco at me and I’m happy.  This cigar, for which I had high hopes,  was a disappointment. It was harsh and acidic.  I have seen and heard of people smoking these for breakfast and I just don’t get that.  I love black coffee, but the bitterness in this cigar was off-putting to me.  Sorry, not a cigar for me.  Maybe the maduro version would suit me better.

Here’s a helpful hint of the day.  I’ve been using the Cuban Crafters Perfect Cutter since Don Kiki gave me one at the IPCPR show and it’s been great.  I love the light weight of this inexpensive cutter and it cuts very well.  It’s replaced the similar styled Drew Estate cutter I was using prior to that.  I’ve noticed over the years that there’s a right and a wrong way to hold a double blade cutter.  Place the top blade on the thumb side for a clean cut.  If you want an uneven cut, put the bottom blade on the thumb side (why would you want that?).  Something in the ergonomics cause the blades to push against one another one way, and push the blades apart the other.  It took me the longest time to figure this out….probably common knowledge, but if it helps one person get a nice clean cut, it was worth mentioning!  Let me know if this fits your observations!

That’s it for now, until the next time,

CigarCraig
