Guest Reviews: The Brick by Toraño and Viaje Exclusivo
As you may or may not know, my father, Paul Vanderslice, passed away on Thursday morning, he would have been 81 today. I am honored to present not one, but two, honorary Craigs today. These two gentlemen generously lent their talents to give me a day off, which I greatly appreciate. The upside for you, the reader, is you are treated to some actual cigar reviews. 🙂 My dad was a career music educator, US Navy veteran, lover of baseball and Moosehead beer, and a good dad. He touched a great many lives in his career, and he worked right up until the end of his life as a church choir director. We will miss him, and, although he was almost 81, he left us too early. Alec Bradley American, ORTSAC 1962, Nestor Miranda and Brick Cigars
Can I start out by stating that this is my least favorite time of year? Is dark when I get up, it’s dark when I get home, and the temperatures are dropping. It makes it harder to smoke larger cigars and really be able to relax. My evening routine usually involves walking the dog with a cigar. I’ve been walking with cigars for years, at least walking keeps me warm and I generally walk for half or more of a cigar and finish the other half off while I “cool down”. An added benefit is that I get a little exercise while I enjoy a smoke. I have found that stronger cigars tend to hold up better in the cold and milder cigars tend to get lost. Continue reading

A Brick, a San Lotano and a La Aurora and Some News
The second half of my week started with taking a walk with my youngest son and his dog. A few weeks ago Sheryl at StogieBoys.com sent me a few samples of various vigil as of The Brick Box Press by Toraño. All three of these sizes were pretty large for me for cold weather, so I grabbed the smallest one, a 5½x60 “Robusto” that appears smaller due to the square press. The other two cigars were a torpedo and Churchill both longer than I wanted for a cold evening. I gave my son a Maria Mancini Robusto Larga, he’s new to cigars and hasn’t yet had anything square pressed or Honduran. He enjoyed the Maria Mancini experience which is good because that’s a nice, inexpensive smoke. Back to The Brick. I had first experienced this brand back in 2004 when my wife and I held a cigar event at the Freehold Raceway in New Jersey. The folks at Toraño were very generous and sent a bundle of Brick torpedoes along with a box of Exodus 1959 to give to the attendees and at the time I thought it was a decent bundle cigar. La Flor Dominicana Solis, Gurkha Pure Evil and Founders Roosevelt Cigars
I smoked a few PCA show samples this week, some I was looking forward to, some not so much, maybe. The first was the La Flor Dominicana Solis, the first cigar blended by Litto Gomez, Jr., who is in his early 20’s. This 6½ x 50 cigar is a companion, of sorts, to the La Nox line, which his older brother, Tony, created a few years ago. Continue reading

Dunbarton Tobacco and Trust Muestra de Saka Unstolen Valor and Umbagog Cigars
I did some searching around locally last week for Dunbarton Tobacco and Trust’s latest release, the Muestra de Saka Unstolen Valor. The closest practically local source was only selling by the box, and as much as I’d treasure having seven of those in the humidor, and as much as I trust Saka’s palate to line up with my own and not get stuck with cigars I don’t like, It’s hard to drop over $100 on seven cigars right now. I just can’t do it. Heck, I’m a cheap bastard (and Saka is well aware of this), it was hard enough for me to shell out the 18 bones each for two of these. Continue reading
